Starting with the last quarter of the 19th century, the efforts of
some personalities from the former
Sălaj
County are mentioned, to
gather into private or school collections the locally discovered
antiquities . In this way, important collections, owned by
Lajos
Szikszai from
Zalău,
the aristocratic family
Wesselényi-Teleki
from
Jibou
or the count
Andrássy
family from
Gârcei,
were constituted.
The collection of the Minorite Gymnasium from
Şimleu Silvaniei,
enriched by Professor J.
F. Fetzer,
was no less valuable.
Unfortunately, a large part from those collections was lost during
the violent events from the first half of the 20th century.
We only know about a small part of those collections; a few
pieces are now in the
Zalău
Museum Collections, through the
efforts of Vasile
Lucãcel,
the first director of this institution.
In this study, we aim to publish the prehistoric bronze
artefacts from the Szikszai Collection, which was brought into the
Museum Collections in
1951,
alongside the bronze artefacts
acquisitioned in
1958
from the heiress of
Teleki
family from
Jibou.
In the same year, some prehistoric bronze objects from Moigrad
area were purchased from Professor
Béla Székely,
a former
professor at the
Wesselényi
College. Aside from the catalogue of
prehistoric bronze artefacts held by the
Zalău
Museum, we also
included similar pieces from isolated discoveries in
Sălaj
County.
We are convinced of the usefulness of this approach, despite the
fact that the pieces from old collections lack reliable data about the
Bronzuri preistorice din Sălaj
place and circumstances
of discovery. Beyond these limits, their
publication is necessary to outline the dynamics of bronze
metallurgy and especially the practice of depositing objects made
of metal from the Transylvanian Bronze Age.
A consistent chapter has been reserved for discussing the
dynamics of discoveries of the prehistoric bronze artefacts from
Sălaj
County. We focused on deposits and isolated bronze pieces
belonging to three phases of the Bronze Age and to the early period
of the Iron Age, when this practice gradually diminished, before
stopping during the middle
Hallstatt
period. From the
Şimleu
Depression come only deposits which are dated during the middle
Bronze Age, probably in connection with the centre of power
belonging to the Wietenberg communities which controlled the
access through
Marca
and
Şimleu Silvaniei
gorges. In the Late
Bronze Age, the centre of gravity of the depositions moved in the
area of the
Someş
Valley, in which the presence of people using
pottery decorated in the
Suciu de Sus - Lăpuş
style is documented.
A large number of deposits and isolated pieces are coming from
Şimleu
Depression region, which confirms the importance of this
contact area between the Upper
Tisza
region and Transylvania. At
the same time, due to the orientation of the main watercourses to
the Upper
Tisza
basin, throughout
Sălaj
unit, the location appears
as a connection between the two regions mentioned above. As
such, in the Bronze Age, the movement of people and especially
that of goods between Transylvania and the
Tisza
Plain, and
further away to Central Europe, crossed the crucial territory of
nowadays
Sălaj
County. The total number of bronze artefacts
coming from deposits or isolated discoveries in
Sălaj
area is about
750
(fragments and complete pieces). At first sight, the quantity
does not seem very large, for example in comparison with only one
of the major deposits from Transylvania, that from Uioara, which
contains nearly
6000
pieces, having a total weight of about
1.1
tonnes of metal.
From all prehistoric bronze deposits discovered in
Sălaj
area, about
80%
can be ascribed to the Late Bronze Age, meaning
early Bronze
D - Hallstatt
A, which once again confirms the
unprecedented development of the practice of bronze artefacts
deposition during this period, on the background of an alleged

flourishing of bronze metallurgy. Within this discussion
framework, concerning many facets of the phenomenon of bronze
deposition, we launched a working hypothesis about the hidden
causes which led to the burial, throwing into the waters or
deposition into the caves of a huge quantity of metal, during the
late Bronze Age (Bronze
D
-
Hallstatt
A phase). Basically, our
assumption does not put aside the wider interpretation of metal
artefacts deposition from that period as votive practice. However,
our question is if the immense value of these offerings is not
hiding a less postulated hypothesis, ignored by researchers who
studied the evolution of contemporaneous communities. These
offerings, huge in volume and value, might have been the
expression of a period of crisis in the collective conscience, of
potential difficulties in the communication with the world of the
gods. Therefore the bronze depositions, documented in large
number during this period, may represent only one of the
solutions chosen to regain the goodwill of the gods and to restore
the state of harmony between the terrestrial world and the
metaphysical one.
Data about the Szikszai Collection
Lajos
Szikszai
(1852,
Şamşud
- 1897,
Zalău)
a lawyer by
profession, but also writer and scientist, held an important post in
the administration of
Sălaj
County between
1883
and
1897.
Passionate about archaeology and a collector of antiquities,
Szikszai was counted among the pioneers of archaeology and
museography from
Sălaj
area. He militated for archaeological
research of the Roman limes on
Meseş
ridge and was actively
involved in the founding of a museum in
Zalău.
For the latter
purpose, he donated his entire collection of antiquities to the
Museum Association in
Sălaj
County. Following the donation
made to the County in
1880,
the artefacts were displayed in four
showcases, and it was mentioned that each showcase had the
dimensions of about
2.5
χ
1.25
m.
They were placed in the small
meeting room of the former prefecture. The objects were identified
and labelled, and each showcase was assigned to a historical
period: Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman. Some pieces
were lost during the First World War and the troubled brief period

after the Unification of
1918,
but the remaining artefacts were kept
in the same room until
1929.
Leontin Ghergariu, as leader of the
ASTRA association in
Sălaj,
demanded and obtained the remaining
pieces from the collection of Szikszai from
Sălaj
Prefecture,
between the wars. After
1940,
some pieces from the collection and
the archive of ASTRA
Sălaj
were taken over by the MNM
Budapest, or entered in the
Wesselényi
College Collection from
Zalău.
A short notice from the journal of this college, published in
the
1942 -1943
school year, clearly stated that a part of the Szikszai
Collection was property of ASTRA
Sălaj,
and
Székely
Bela,
who
was the professor of history and geography, took over as custodian
what remained from the collection, after
1940.
Many pieces were
lost in the circumstances of the Second World War, and after the
war, in
1951,
the remaining collection of the General Culture High
School
Zalău
(the former
Wesselényi
College) were assigned to the
new museum founded in
Zalău.
The lot consists of
178
pieces, of
which
75
are prehistoric. Amongst the artefacts from the Szikszai
Collection taken oven by the Museum in
1951
are prehistoric
objects (made of stone and metal), Roman pieces (pottery, teguke,
sewage pipes, elements of mosaic from Ulpia Traiana
Sarmizegetusa, beads from Pompeii, lamps, weapons and tools,
bronze statuettes), as well as weapons, spurs and various objects
belonging to the Medieval and Modern periods.

Prehistoric bronze artefacts from the
Wesselényi-Teleki
Collection
In the year
1958,
through the Minutes no.
84/1958,
the
Museum of
Zalău
took over from Anna
Teleki
from
Jibou,
a series
of antiquities, including some prehistoric bronze objects. The
inventory only specifies that the pieces had been collected between
1880
and
1944.
Amongst the prehistoric bronze artefacts of this
collection is a bronze dagger blade, mentioned for the first time in
1989
by
N.
Gudea. Subsequently this dagger blade, ascribed to the
Rozavlea type, was published by C.
Kacsó in a
wider study
concerning this type of artefacts. The mention that the piece comes
from the Moigrad area ( Moigrad-Umgebung ) is only an
assumption, which may be probably valid only for the Roman
objects which belonged to this collection. The dagger blade is not
included in this study, because it was not accessible for analysis.
