Summary
The Albania's codices
consti tute a
monumental wealth of the culture and human
thought. The Knowledge of the multiple values in an object and task of the cultural
anthropology.
"The Purple Codex of
Berat"
chronologically represent one of the most ancient
version of the New Testament, and is put among the
ЗА
earliest in the world
together with the codices "Sinopensts O", "Kossanensis", 'Velropolilanus",
"Vindobonensis" and "Codex Graece nr.
53 "
(Petersbourg Library). From seven
rare and unique codices written on purple parchment whih have arrived up to our
modern times two of them are in Albania.
In the. beginning it was the word and aftenvards the Holy Writ, the Bible. The
tradition of conservation of the manuscripts of the Holy Word in Albania is a
part of the cultural identity of the Ulyrian-Albanicm space.
The tradition of copying of the holy evangelical texts which is testified from the
depth of the centuries in the Albanian area has led the scholars up to the thesis of
the possibility of the existence of a native school of the church manuscripts, of a
school of the paleo-Balkan hinterland which exists along the Syrian-Palestian
school, the
alexandrin
school and that of Constantinople.
The existence of a native of the. Holy Writ is connected with other cultural
traditions developed in continuity since the ancient times in Albania, especially
with those of applied church arts as

iconography
and mural
painting, the liturgical music, the art itself of building the
churches and monasteries. This is also connected with the inclusion of the 1/lyrian-

Albanian

in what is called "the biblical source space" since the first century
after Christ. The evangelists and the first missionaries of Christianity initially
adressed to the Hebraic comunities, as it is testified by indirect sources,

Hebraic comunities, as it is testified by indirect sources, but even by biblical matter
itself there, were in lllyricum, too, but separately along the coastal line. Some

country.
The

of the Albanian "scribes" gives to the church Manuscripts, along
with the values as a contribution to the history of the evolution of the Christian
thought, even a source quality connected with the region.
The Holy Writ which are preserved in Albania show that in this space always has
been an important cultural elite which not only knew how to preserve them, to seme
in the faith's institutions, but also, morewet; to write them with
devono.
In the Albania's codices are preserved values which cannot be re-created of the
applied art (paleography, decorations of calligraphy,
miniatures,
vignettes, canons).
Many of these values of culture belong to the pre-iconographic period and have
preceded the tradition of the church mural painting.
The preservation of the codices in Albania in this environment where have passed
the

stress of the ages, and where crossed
irréconciliable
influences
expresses once more one of the elhno-dislingmshing values of the Albanian people,
his inter-religions tolerance even for the today's Albania. Such manuscripts are

part of the cultural identity of the people which has preserved them and make
known Albania in the world, add to its reputation.
The biblical-evangelical manuscripts, a part of the early and following.
Christianity, don't constitute in themselves
d
national tradition, in the
conventional sense of the word. They are expression of the general development and
elevation of the Christian thought as part of the history of the human thought in
general. But the tradition of preservation and, especially, of copying of the Holy
Writ from the natives, in the lllyrian-Albaman space, from the pakochristianily
up to now, is a part of the popular cultural tradition.
The
antropologicul
science has observed that the writers of the holy word, "the
scribes" were masters of one of the most ancient applied arts, of the art of the
calligraphy. The paleographs avaluates the autowriting of these works as a design
andgraphy. The calligraphy has been considered since some centuries consentliively
as a noble cultural mastery. This approaches even more in the popular culture the
library of the codices. The embellishment of the initial letters the beauty of the
handwriting in general are an expression of the tradition of a cultural
mas tety
which is connected Albanian ethnicttm.
