Gus Dixon, an idealistic mixed-race university lec¬
turer, is campaigning for the payment of repar¬
ations to Africa by European governments. He
needs leading Africans to help his cause and
Dr
Akinye
Okigbo,
living in exile in London, seems
an obvious candidate. For his part,
Okigbo
sees in
Gus the perfect tool to further his political ends
-
to steal a priceless African artefact, a mask called
the Dancing Face, of huge talismanic significance
to Africans and held in Britain since the end of
the last century, and to use it to make a deal with
the Nigerian regime.
The theft goes smoothly but Gus starts to doubt
Okigbo s motives and spirits the treasure away to
his student brother in Manchester. In the mean¬
time, the young thieves whom Gus hired to
execute the robbery decide on some private enter¬
prise of their own and end up by blackmailing
Okigbo
himself.
Soon everybody is after the Dancing Face

is its value to collectors and politicians alike that
people are prepared to kill to get it. Murder, kid¬
napping, blackmail, espionage
...
it s all running
hopelessly out of control for the young man
caught in the middle of these powerful, opposing
forces. And behind it all the real question: how
should the mask be used and what is the secret
of its power?
