Kole Idromeno — Outstanding Representative
of the Albanian traditional Art
The life and the rich and varied activity of the artist Kole Idromeno
covers the entire main period of the Albanian National Renaissance
and that of Independence until 1939. He was known at home and
abroad mainly as a talented painter, but during his life he practised
other fine arts and various crafts connected with building. For more
than 40 years of his life in Shkodra he worked as a professional photo-
grapher, sculptor, scene-painter, mask-maker, as well as a gifted
joiner — a skill which he learned from his father. He could also work
as a blacksmith, mechanician, and as a self-made architect he left a
number of private and public buildings to his native city. All the main
buildings of the road across the centre of Shkodra (taday the Enver Hoxha
Street) and those of the Branko Kadija Street (today both of them are
museum streets) were designed and executed by this untiring architect.
His artistic legacy as well as the urbanistic ensemble on both streets,
make his name immortal as an artist and builder of refined taste.
Kole Idromeno was bom in Shkodra on the 15th of August 1860
to the family of an Albanian joiner from Parga who had settled in
Shkodra and had married a Shkodran girl. As a child in the public
school of the city Kole Idromeno excelled in the fine arts, especially
in painting. At that time Albania, a country under occupation and in
great backwardness in all walks of life, had only a few schools which

taught mostly in foreign languages, therefore Kole Idromeno had not
the slightest chance to get a decent artistic and cultural education
there. At the age of 15 he entered the academy of arts in Venice. The
youth missed his Homeland much, hut the desire to study ‘painting was
great and he stayed in this school six months, after which he left to
join a renowned Italian painter with whom he worked as an apprentice
until 1878 when he returned to Albania called by the great events
that were developing in the country after the founding of the Albanian
League of Prizren (1878-1881). He was an active participant in the
patriotic movement of the time, working as member of the first brass
band of Shkodra, taking part in the popular manifestations, seeing
volunteer fighters off to the front of the war against the partitioning of
the Albanian territories, which was decided on in the Congress of
Berlin.
Later he turned most of his attention to painting, practising the
art of photography too, beginning from 1886. He made himself known
as a good violinist in the group of popular musicians of Shkodra. He
did much sculpturing too, for the cult buildings, and was active also
among the groups of amateur theatres for which he did scene-paintings.
In the beginning of this country he also tried making masques for
carnivals, with great success.
A man of progress and an artist who did much to enliven the
cultural life of his city — as part of the movement for national and
social liberation during the Renaissance — he distinguished himself
in the patriotic movement of the time, linking his art with the events of
his northern city and inspiring the Albanian uprising, which in the first
years of the 20th century experienced a new upsurge with strong
tendencies to complete independence and freedom. His connections with
the Albanian insurgents of the period 1910-1911, his personal contribu-
tion in making Albanian flags, his efforts to bring the first cinema
equipment to Albania in 1912, his later efforts to put up new buildings
to his city, such as cafes and cinema buildings, or some industrial
building, speak of his close connection with the Albanian patriotic,
democratic and progressive movement. He nourished a great hatred for
the Ottoman occupiers, the anti-popular regimes, and the ruling classes,
which had left the country in a state of profound economic, political,
cultural and educational backwardness.
It is a known fact that he executed some paintings for the institu-
tions of the^ cult on orders, especially during the end of the last century,
but most of his work in the field of painting belong to unreligious
tableaus with a popular inspiration and national character. Kole Idro-
meno is considered the founder of the Shkodran school of realistic
painters of the period of the Albanian National Renaissance. Therefore,
in the history of the young Albanian art of the renaissance he is
mentioned first among the many painters of the Traditional school in
which Spiro Xega (1863-1953), Ndoc Martini (1880-1916), Andrea Kushi
(1885-1959), Simon Rrota (1887-1961), Vangjush Mio (1891-1957), Zef
Kolombi (1907-1949), the young painter Jordan Misja, a martyr in the
National Liberation War of Albania (1912-1942) and others, were most
outstanding.
During his life, Kole Idromeno participated with his paintings in

the art exhibition of Shkodra in 1923, in that of Tirana in 1931 and
in six international exhibitions abroad in Vienna, Budapest, Rome and
Bari, and New York.

Kole Idromeno’s main productions in painting, according to their
importance and chronological order, are:
1. «Motra Tone» (Sister Tone) — 1883, is considered the first
psychological and social portrait in the Albanian realistic painting of
the National Renaissance and one of the masterpieces of the painter.
This portrait executed with a sure touch, is one of his finest creations
as regards variation of line and richness of colour. (Galery of Arts,
Tirana).
2. «Bardhejt» and «Lugu i Kagakeve (the Dale of the Outlaws),
created in the period 1886-1889, are two fine specimens of Albanian
landscape. (Gallery of Arts, Shkodra).
3. In 1897 he created «Shkrepi i Ulqinit» (Ulqini cape), a work
of artistic value and patriotic inspiration, which he completed during
his trips with the city musicians to the Albanians of Ulqin. (Gallery
of Arts, Tirana).
4. By the end of the last century he worked on a number of
paintings with religious theme, amongst which «Shkodra-Genacan»
centres on two Albanian figures with the old quarter of the city «Rozafa»
in the background. (Atheistic Museum, Shkodra).
5. «Vendetta», quadruptic, 1892, is an important work on a social
theme — the struggle against fratricide. (Property of a Shkodran
family).
6. «Dy Rruget» (Two Streets), a tableau of large proportions, rich
in scenes from everyday life, was painted in 1896. It has a sound and
realistic popular spirit and judgement. In his work «Souvenirs de la
Haute Albanie», Paris 1901, p. 276, August Legrand mentions this
work and some other paintings of this period (the end of the 19th

7. In the beginning of the 20th century he made a portrait of
Skanderbeg. The work was lost in 1914.
8. The portrait «Nd. Xhuxha», done in 1904, is the first he made
of an Albanian man of the renaissance. Ndoc Xhuxha (Anton) was the
representative of Shkodra in the Albanian Association of Istanbul
in 1879, an association which played an important role in the Albanian
letters at the end of the last century and in the patriotic activity abroad,

9. «Furra e bukes Serreq» (Bakery of Serreq), December 1912. In
the difficult period of the Serb-Montenegrm siege of the city of Shko-
dra, he worked on this tableau which remained incomplete. (Property

10. «Harapi i Beledijes» (the negro of Beledije) is a loork inspired

11. «Leka i Madh» (Alexander the Great) urns shown hi the art
Exhibition of Shkodra in 1921, and was lost.
12. In 1922 the painter worked on the inspired portrait of the
Highlander. The fierce and proud character of the Albanian highlander/
his manliness, spiritual strength and selflessness, inured to a life of
difficulties, all this has been reproduced with feeling in the portrait.

12. In 1922-1923, working on two photographs, he reproduced the
portrait of his sister, Tone, and of her husband, Andrea Shkanjeti. As
reproductions (Kole Idromeno has made scores of them) these two
preserve their peculiar artistic values due to the fact that he did not
remain a slave to the photographies, but rather recreated them from his
own imagination and experience (Gallery of Arts, Shkodra).
14. In 1923 he produced the portrait of Kole Gurashi, a close
friend of this. The work is undoubtedly a valuable achievement which
brings something new to this genre of painting. (Gallery of Arts, Tirana)
15. During the summer of 1924, the time of the triumph of the
June Democratic Revolution, Kole Idromeno completed one of his
masterpieces, the tableau «Dasma Shkodrane» (Shkodran Wedding),
which like many of his creations has profuse light, great liveliness and
movement. The technique of painting directly in the sun-light has
been successfully applied. Though a traditional ceremony, the work is
entirely devoid of any religious note. (Gallery of Arts, Tirana).
16. Again in 1924, when the Democratic Government promised the
peasants to carry out the land reform, Kole Idromeno executed,«Portret
Fshatari» (Peasant’s Portrait), one of his best works in realistic painting,
in which the artist concentrates on psychological analysis, trying to
capture the suffering of the oppressed .and exploited peasant. Never-
theless, it is full of conviction in a better future. This work has been
described as the model of realism which determined the style of the
entire Albanian painting before the war. (Gallery of Arts, Tirana).
17. In 1930 he completed his beautiful work «Portret Muratori*
{Portrait of a Mason), which appeared for the first time in the Art
Exhibition of Tirana, 1931, and was lost.
18. «Self-portrait», 1931, is an artistic achievement, made at an
advanced age. It represents the artist and the citizen, tossed by the
vicissitudes of life. (Gallery of Arts, Tirana).
19. Again in 1931 he made the portrait of his wife, Cina, in her
Shkodra dress. The work is executed with art and inspiration. (Gallery
of Arts, Tirana).
20. In the period 1923-1933 he put all his mastery and inspiration
in the portrait «Mbesa»■ (The Niece), a work on child psychology. He
loved children and made for them not only portraits but also many
beautiful toys. (Gallery of Arts, Tirana).
21. «Oborr Shtepie Shkodrane» (Shkodran Court-yard) was achieved
with great art and mastery in 1932. (Gallery of Arts, Tirana).
22. «The 100 year old man of Postriba»■ or «Welcome» is the last
composition carried out with art and truthfulness in 1936. (Gallery of
Arts, Tirana).

These are the main works of Kolé Idromeno in painting. They
include landscapes, tableaus, and especially portraits, in which Kolé
Idromeno excelled as a talented colourist. The important thing in him
is that his realistic art was inspired by a popular spirit and had a
national character which gave his abundant creativeness indisputable
ideological and artistic values.
This renowned Albanian painter has produced many reproduc-
tions, drawings, water-colour paintings.
Kolé Idromeno died on 12th of December 1939, a few months after
the occupation of the country by fascist Italy. He died with the pain
that his Homeland was occupied and one of his best works «Shkodran
Wadding», that had been taken for an exhibition abroad, was reported
as lost.
After Liberation, with the direct interest of the government, his
work was returned to Albania in 1956.
The best works of this outstanding artist are displayed in the art
galleries of the country or are property of some Shkodran and Tirana
families.
This talented artist is a worthy representative of the Albanian tradi-
tional art.
