The Wooden Sculpture Collection at
the Samogitian Alka Museum
SAMOGITIA HAS AN OLD TRADITION of creating wooden sculptures.
Wooden shrines, built directly on the earth or on stone foundations, shrine-
type poles and roofed poles are characteristic of this area. Memorial monuments
with sculptures of saints were especially frequently erected between the 18th and 19th
centuries, when the Lithuanian people lived through meaningful historic times.
The collection of wooden sculptures held at that Samogitian museum Alka in-
cludes 934 exhibits, among them sculptures, bas relief, stand-up crosses, small altars
and shrines. The first exhibit donated to the museum in 1932, the year the mu-
seum opened, is a sculpture of Saint John of Nepomuk created in 1849. From 1934
the museum organized expeditions to the villages of the Telsiai region, and at this
time a variety of exhibits were collected. Apart from the expeditions, individuals
also donated many sculptures to the museum. According to documents included
in the acquisition metric, sculptures were collected from the following regions: Tel-
siai - 376, Plunge - 270, Mazeikiai - 22, Skuodas - 17, Kelme - 6, Akmene - 4,
Silale - 4, Kretinga - 2.
The dates of creation are only known for certain for 74 sculptures in the collection.
The oldest sculpture in the collection, “Anger, is marked with the date 1704. There
are 22 sculptures marked with dates from the 19th century, 33 sculptures marked
with dates from the 20th century, and four marked with dates from the 21st century.
Almost all of the sculptures in the museum collection are polychromatic. Old
masters often used water-soluble paint from natural sources; oil paints were rarely
used. The main colours used were white, brown, blue, red, black, green and yellow.
The artisans who carved the saint statues strove to replicate the colours they saw in
church sculptures, though sometimes they painted from their own imagination or
understanding. Traditional Samogitian sculpture usually only has definition on the
front side; the backside it was often uncarved, rounded or hollowed out.
The museum collection includes saint sculptures of various subjects. The most
common in the collection are sculptures of the Virgin Mary - 202. The most popu-

lar iconographic types of sculptures of the Virgin Mary are: Mary of the Immaculate
Conception, Mother of Mercy, Mother of Sorrows, Pieta and Mary with Child.
The life of Christ is also an often-depicted subject in much of the work by folk
artisans. Iconography includes: the Holy Family, the Christening of Jesus, the
moments of Jesus suffering - Jesus Carrying the Cross, Jesus of Nazareth, scenes
from the Stations of the Cross, the Crucifixion - and the Risen Christ. Another
favourite subject for folk artisans is the Worrying Christ. These statues would reside
in small shrines, often nailed to the trunk oi a tree in a forest, along the side of the
road. The Worrying Christ is symbolic of meditation and suffering.
A large part of the museum sculpture collection is devoted to saints; these inclu-
de St. John Nepomuk, St. George, St. Rocco, St. Isodore, St. Florian, St. Antho-
ny, St. Joseph, St. Barbara, St. Anne and the angels. Other saints are found but not
in such large numbers. There are some sculptures of saints that are unique. These
included sculptures of St. Vincent de Paul, St. Alexander, St. Sebastian, St. Felix,
St. Fabian, St. Martin and St. Balbina.
At the beginning of the 20th century there was an increase in the erection of cros-
ses assembled from two sticks. The creation of these objects required a great deal of
skill. Most often a cast figure or picture of Christ Crucified was affixed to the centre
of these types of crosses.
We only have significant information about a few folk masters. They are: Augusti-
nas Potockis (1844/1852-1945, lived in Luoke, Telsiai district), Kazimieras Mockus
(1870-1944, lived in the village of Kinciuliai, Telsiai district), Kazys Varnelis (1871 —
1945, lived in Alsedziai, Telsiai district). Of the middle-period carvers the most well
known are Stanislovas Riauba (1904-1982, lived in Godeliai village, Plunge region),
Antanas Jonusas (1911-1978, lived in Zylakiai villages, Telsiai region), Jonas Ignotas
(1921-1997, lived in Telsiai), Adomas Kvasas (born 1924, lived in Telsiai).
This publication also presents other notable middle-period woodwork masters
of Samogitia. Most of them were born in the inter-war period in Lithuania; others
were born during the Soviet occupation, studied applied arts in school and began
to carve in Soviet times, when all of aspects of life were ideologized. These artisans
were required to create according to 'new rules’, dictated by the new government.
They created sculptures of dancers, singers, workers and mythological personalities.
Sculptures of saints were not displayed at exhibitions. The characters and themes
addressed by folk art masters changed with the re-establishment of independence
in Lithuania. Folk art masters began to take more interest in the works of old saint
sculpture carvers, and searched for inspiration in traditional Samogitian sculptures.
Most of the artists introduced in this text are members of the Lithuanian Folk Ar-
tists' Society.
