adam_text | SUMMARY
The legacy of works of artist Vytautas Kazimieras Jonynas (1907—
1997) is as great as it is varied — prints, illustrations, magazine and book lay
outs, stain glass windows, sculptures, church décor, water colors as well as
design projects (Le. stamps, posters, and liturgical items). He created these
works while living in Lithuania, Germany, and the United States.
In this monograph, attempts are made to convey the entirety of
V. K. Jonynas s works, to show their variety, to discuss them within the context
of Lithuanian and Western art, to clarify the most important artistic attributes
of these works, and to explain where the works were created. The book covers
the specifics of V K. Jonynass pedagogical, cultural, and administrative
activities; having such an array of skills as an art teacher and — what today
could be termed — an art manager, he was in no way typical; indeed, it was rare
to meet such a person among Lithuanian artists.
From 1923—1929, V. K. Jonynas studied at the Kaunas Art School
and in 1934 finished two Paris art schools, the National Conservatorium of
Arts and Trades {Conservatoire National des Artes et Métiers) and École Boulle.
In 1935, V. K. Jonynas returned to Kaunas. In the 1940s, he became a master
of wood-cutting, working quite a deal as he created beautiful books for book
lovers as well as lifted Lithuania s general “book culture”
In 1944, V. K. Jonynas prepared a well-reviewed exhibition of
his graphic arts in Riga. Midway through that same year, as the front grew
nearer, the Jonynas family had to flee westwards. The artist used the difficult
situation after the War as a means of motivating him further on in his artistic
and pedagogical activities. In 1947, V. K. Jonynas established a school of arts
and trades (École des Artes et Métiers) for foreign war refugees in Freiburg,
Germany. During the German period (1947—1950), V. K. Jonynas created
a great deal. He illustrated books (J. W. Goethes Die Leiden des Jungen
Werthers (1948) and La Siège de Mayence (1951), P. Mérimée s Le manuscript
du professeur Wittembach “Lokys” (1949)). He also created bookplates (ex-
libris) and over thirty stamps in the French-occupied Zone — stamps, which
featured cityscapes and nature scenes. In the late 1950s, he continuously did
exhibitions with Professor Adomus Galdikas in Germany, and in 1949, he had
his own exhibition at the Ariel Gallery in Paris.
In 1951, the artist and his family left for New York, where he quickly
grew accustomed to life as an artist in a new country. From 1952, he took part
in American graphic art and water-color exhibitions. In 1954, his first personal
exhibition was at the Weyhe Gallery in New York. During his American period,
Jonynas was noted for his large and significant artworks: church décor, large-
scale stain-glass windows, liturgical items, furniture as well as architectural
projects. At one time, the artist taught, painted water-colors, and participated
in the activities of artists organizations. His woodcarving, Fifth Avenue, was to
make the artist s name well known throughout the country. For two decades

(1953—1973), Jonynas created Christmas cards at the request of The Book of
the Month Club and the Vydünas Fund. At that time (1951—1957), he also
illustrated and formatted somewhere in the vicinity of ten Lithuanian books.
In 1995, along with the artist Donald Shepard, V. K. Jonynas founded
their own church art studio Jonynas and Shepard Art Studio, Inc. Church
Interiors, where over sixty church décor projects were created and realized.
Jonynas managed to be inspired with new ideas, to discover new art forms, and
to reflect on the old church decorative traditions.
In the 1960s, V. K. Jonynas kept in steady contact with the architect,
Jonas Mulokas; together, the two joined forces to create a “Lithuanian style”
in order to give Lithuanian-American churches their Lithuanian characteristics.
The first of their works was East St. Louiss Church of the Immaculate
Conception — the first Lithuanian prayer-house in the Americas, and what
is today acknowledged as a historical monument. The last of Mulokas and
Jonynas s works was the Church of the Transfiguration in Maspeth, New York
(1962); it may be called a triumph of the “Lithuanian style”. Also worthy of notice
at that time are Jonynas and Shepard s studios stain-glass windows at Wiltons
Sisters of the Notre Dame (1961) and the layout of the Vatican Pavilion at the
New York Worlds Fair (1964—1965), which gave the talented V. K. Jonynas his
name as an artist of modern churches.
Of exceptional merit — not only in terms of art, but in a political
sense as well — is the 1970 sanctified chapel to Lithuania s tortured, Mater
Misericordiae, at St. Peter s Basilica. The interior of the chapel was created based
on V. K. Jonynas s idea. St. Anne s Church in St. Casimir’s cemetery (1971) in
Amsterdam, New York, rather strongly conveys the artist s tastes and esthetics
in architecture and church upholstery. This small white chapel is of such a form
that it could be considered either a work of architecture or a sculpture.
At the end of his artistic years V. K. Jonynas took to sculpture. The
talented graphic artist and drawer would often dabble in sculpture in his own
way as a graphic artist, creating what is almost a rather spacious drawing,
which used many rough surface engravings. With this discovered passion,
he experimented with various finishes — from pieces of smelted scrap metal
to stamped metal or even sawed, embossed aluminum. The primary motifs
of Jonynas s sculptures illustrate the artist s traditional values in faith. With
these depicted motifs, Jonynas associated what to him were important
problems in ethics and art.
In the 1990s, having donated his gifts to the museums of Vilnius
and Kaunas, V. K. Jonynas returned to Lithuania, where in 1993, the
V. K. Jonynas Gallery in Druskininkai, a subdivision of the M. K. Ciurlionis
Museum, was opened.
