Golden Age depict tables richly laid with prod¬
ucts from the far corners of the earth, products
attesting to the vast scope of the Dutch trade
network. These striking pictures reveal much
more about Dutch society and capitalist culture
of the seventeenth century than has been previ¬
ously understood, says the author of this en¬
gaging and original book. Julie

strasser explores for the first time the signifi¬
cance of various foods and commodities ren¬
dered on canvas during the Dutch Republic s
phenomenal rise to prosperity.
From domestic cheese, herring, and beer to
grains, lemons, and wines from across Europe
to exotic commodities like pepper, porcelain,
tobacco and even slaves imported by the Dutch
East and West India Companies, the fruits of
global commerce glowed in paintings of the
time. Yet an uncomfortable tension exists bet¬
ween these elegant representations of products
of trade and the darker aspects of their com¬
modity histories, Hochstrasser shows. She chal¬
lenges conventional interpretations of the still-
life paintings and investigates what buyers,
owners, and viewers of the paintings knew

tory of art and of food, economic history, the
exploitation that fueled Dutch commercial suc¬
cess in the early modern period, and the inter¬
