The Crypt of
Demeter
excavated in
1895
became the first Bosporan painted crypt,
which was accessible for sightseeing and research. In
1908,
the private territory of the
Zaitsevs estate together with the Crypt was bought by the Imperial Archaeological Commit¬
tee. Since then a new page in the history of a unique monument of the
1st
century AD began.
The Crypt of
Demeter
was opened for sightseeing. During first years of exhibiting the state
of the monument did not cause specialists alarm. Paintings were bright. In
1914,
M. I. Ros-
tovtsev noticed that paintings had suffered little and colors had not faded. However, very
soon the condition of the paintings changed for the worse sharply. Paint coat was scaling off
and plaster was partially falling off.
First restoration and conservation works in the Crypt of
Demeter
aimed at preven¬
tion of plaster layer destruction, salinization, and falling off pigments of the painting were
held in the
1930s.
The staff of the Kerch Museum was recommended to survey the state of
the paintings and humidity rate in the Crypt regularly. The chamber of the Crypt was built
at the depth of
5.4
m
down the present surface of the ground on the clay slope at the head
of an ancient river, which flew into the river Melek-Chesma (ancient Panticap). Evidently,
the very location of the crypt of
Demeter
was the main reason of high humidity in the cham¬
ber of the Crypt.
The Kerch Museum realized special joint programs with many scientific establish¬
ments of the USSR and Ukraine when studying the Crypt of
Demeter.
No cardinal changes
in the state of the Crypt have taken place for many years. In
1959,
the project of conserva¬
tion of the Crypt of
Demeter,
prepared by the Central scientific-restoration workshops of the
Academy of Building and Architecture, was approved on recommendation of the USSR
Ministry of Culture. A bypass shell rock air gallery around the crypt was built upon that proj¬
ect. The gallery and the chamber of the Crypt were re-covered with ferroconcrete slabs.
The slabs and outer surface of the gallery walls were covered with a layer of bituminous
waterproofing. So, there was waterproofing from above and from three sides and no water
insulation from below and from the dromos. In front of the dromos of the crypt the entrance
pavilion of two rooms was built and two positive ventilation pipes were laid. The project was
realized with departures and the ventilation stopped functioning soon. The state of the crypt
was changing for the worse.
In
1995,
the Demetra Foundation began its functioning. Its main task is assistance in
the preservation and popularization of the cultural and historical heritage of Kerch and the
eastern Crimea. The first active step was made by the Demetra Foundation when the Franco-
Ukrainian seminar on the problem of restoration of the Crypt was held. In
2000,
the Demetra
Foundation paid for the circular drainage project and financed its construction around the
Crypt the following year. This construction saved the Crypt from fatal consequences during
the September flood of
2002.
The circular drainage helps gradual stabilization of the temper¬
ature and the humidity level in the crypt, necessary for preservation of the paintings.
Conservation and restoration of the unique archaeological monument of the
1st

is an extremely difficult task demanding great expe¬
rience of work on archaeological monuments and high degree of responsibility of well-qual¬
ified professionals.
In spite of a long preparatory period of projecting work, we have attained significant
positive changes: subsoil waters have been drained from the Crypt of
Demeter
chamber; spe¬
cialists mark stable state of the paintings in the Crypt during the last fifteen years. At the
same time we only begin to realize our main task
—
the project for preservation and conser¬
vation of the painting coat of the Crypt of
Demeter
burial chamber.
