NARRATION OF PROPHET ISAIAH
AND THE CREATION OF THE POLITICAL IDEOLOGY OF
THE EARLY MEDIAEVAL BULGARIA
264
NARRATION
OF PROPHET ISAIAH
AND THE CREATION OF THE POLITICAL IDEOLOGY OF
THE EARLY MEDIAEVAL BULGARIA
The book includes a new diplomatic edition of the original text
οι
Narration
of Prophet Isaiah How He Was Taken by an Angel to the Seventh Heaven (known
also as Bulgarian Apocryphal Chronicle
-
a title the present study does not
accept). This edition is based exclusively on its unique copy from the Kitchevo's
manuscript. The author offers a completely new interpretation of the source,
which is studied in relation to the Biblical tradition and to some images and ideas
rooted in the text of the Holy Scripture. Thus, it is presented as an evidence of
the Christian character of the mediaeval Bulgarian culture.
Chapter I (p.
11-29)
includes two parts. The first presents the manuscript
(Kitchevo's manuscript-Moscow, State Historical Museum, Khludov collection
№ 123)
that contains the unique known copy of the Narration. The author proposes
several observations on its contents and its relation to other manuscripts and old
printed books as Razlichni
potrebi
of Jacob Kraykov, published in Venice in
AD
1572.
The second part contains the original text of the Narration of prophet
Isaiah, a diplomatic edition that follows totally and absolutely the manuscript
original with its orthography, diacritical signs and even the columns and the
lines. The aim of the author is to avoid any interference in the written text.
Photos of the respective pages of the manuscript accompany the edition.
Chapter II (p.
30-54)
proposes a review of the modern historiography on the
Narration of Prophet Isaiah. The author traces out the main ideas, related to the
source and discusses them. First, this is its national-patriotic interpretation, which
finds in the text some 'anti-Byzantine' purpose, linked to the
époque
of Byzantine
power over Bulgaria. The author not only rejects the existence of anti-Byzantine
attitudes but he even discovers certain traits of consolidation between Bulgarians
and Rhomaioi. A special attention is paid to the very extravagant and fashionable
in the
1
970s-80s trends to search and find out some pagan elements and beliefs
in the text of the apocryphon and in the mediaeval deuterocanonical literature in
general. The author endeavors to reveal their principal untenability in the broad
background as well as in the details. He discusses also two different opinions:
of the so called "Bogomil's heretical character" of the Narration as well as the
trend to use it as a regular source for the historical events in the early mediaeval
Bulgaria. The chapter ends with a suggestion about both the date of the creation
of the compilation and its localization in the Western Bulgarian lands.
264
Chapter III {p.
55-109)
comprises three parts united by the identity features,
related to the idea of New Israel. The first is centred on the literary tradition,
related to the name of prophet Isaiah in the canonical, deuterocanonical and
apocryphal Biblical texts. The aim is to reveal the reason of using the image
of the prophet who is the relating person of the text. The second part presents
some geographical features of the religious identity of New Israel. It treats the
general complex of the Chosen People and the Promised Land that had a crucial
importance for the imagery of the mediaeval culture. This complex is linked
to the history of the Bulgarians, at least such as we find it in the Narration
of Prophet Isaiah. The third part of the chapter is a study of the signification
of the city and of the accounts about the foundation of cities as model for the
instauration
of state, following the typology of the Creation of the Universe.
Chapter IV (p.
110-139)
proposes a research on the image of the ruler, chosen
by God and obedient to His Will. This is the Biblical model of the Prophet and
King David, some traces of which one can find in the text of the Narration of
Prophet Isaiah. We do not have any detailed original argumentation on the topic
and that is the reason we have to look for its rests and indications of it in our source.
This is primarily the image of tsar Izot and his antagonists. They are created after
to the model of the pious and righteous ruler, chosen and promoted by God, whose
battles and victories participate to the mission of Salvation of the Humankind.
Chapter
F
(p.
140-174)
is focused on the Ruler-Renovator whose image is
created in a more complex way. It is formed by using the model of two persons:
Prophet Moses and Saint Emperor
Constantine.
A special attention is paid to
every one of them. They are different but closely interrelated as figures of
Renewal. The facts and arguments for this are well known: acquirement of the
Ten Commandments by the Lord's hand on Mount Horeb and of the Law in the
Pentateuch; escape from Egypt and the pharaoh's yoke through the desert to the
Promised Land; Conversion of the Empire to Christianity; "New Constantines"
and the rhythm of the imperial Renewal in Constantinople. In this chapter, the
author presents a study on several images by whom these ideas are expressed in
the Narration of Prophet Isaiah: Tsar Ispor, Saint
Constantine,
Saint Tsar Peter.
The fact that the ideological schema under research is strongly related to the
New Testament tradition should be underlined: Lord Jesus Christ was incarnated
and came in the World in order to renovate the fallen Humankind. Thus, He
becomes archetype of every Renovator and as Celestial King
-
fore image of the
terrestrial rulers. This is the main idea of this part of the book.
Chapter VI (p.
175-205)
is not thematically defined but encloses individual
researches on the more or less unknown rulers, mentioned in the Narration of
Prophet Isaiah. They are presented in alphabetical order:
1.
Aref;
2.
Basil;
3.
The
Cometopouloi;
4.
Constantine;
5.
Nicephorus;
6.
Roman;
7.
Seleukia Simeklit;
8.
Symeon;
9.
Slav;
10.
Empress Theodora and her son-emperor;
11.
Turgius.
265
The intention is to propose a historical but mostly ideological identification of
the cited persons after a discussion with the previous researches.
There are three
excurses
added to the main body of the study. They contain
researches on the thematically similar to it but still different topics.
Excurse
I (p.
211-222)
presents some observations of the author on the way
the List of the
Bulgar
Princes (Khans) traversed the cultural border, related to the
Conversion of Bulgaria to Christianity. After a study on the manuscript tradition
of the text, he realizes that it is situated in the framework of the so called Hellenic
Chronicle immediately after and as continuation of the Biblical narration about the
kings of Israel and Judah, i. e. the rulers of the Chosen People. Thus, this particularly
important monument of the pagan
Bulgar
culture became bridge to the creation of
the new and scripturally based identity of the people, of their state and its ruler.
Excurse
II (p.
223-231)
treats the topic concerning the rulers city-founders in
the Narration of Prophet Isaiah and their sacral or heroic image. The foundation
of a city is studied in relation to the Creativity as type oftheosis and divine activity
that is distinctive for the sacralization of power in the pre-modern societies.
Excurse
III (p.
232-242)
is centred on a particular problem, related again to
the sacralization of power: the idea of the State-Church and the acquisition of
certain ecclesiastical character by the temporal state. During the Middle Ages
and the pre-modern
époques
in general, the state acquired functions that are
more typical of the religious structures and its goals leave the practical purposes
and enter the salvation mission of the Church. In the
excurse,
the author proposes
a research, which reaches a conclusion similar to the main one in the book but by
different ways and based on diverse and historically later source material.
Thus, we come to two types of conclusions: those concerning the Narration
of Prophet Isaiah itself, its character and interpretation and those concerning
the identity of the mediaeval Bulgarian state and its political ideology. The
Narration is
compilative
literary work, created in the course of time but having
its integrity as relation and ideology. The last or more recent historical events,
cited in the text, which we can identify in other sources, date from Eleventh
century. Nevertheless, apparently, we do not have its very end and the last
words leave an impression of incompleteness. This means that it could be
continued with later stories. The Narration of Prophet Isaiah is largely based
on Old Testament or more generally on Eastern prophetic literature. This fact
indicates its association to the Biblical tradition, merely related to Bulgarian
history. Thus, we reveal a literary work, which does not express either patriotic
trends, or a type of mythological epos but it is an adaptation of some figures
and concepts, borrowed from the Holy Scripture aiming at the creation of the
neophyte Bulgarian identity
-
that of New Israel. This is a part of the common
trends among the Barbarians and in the general cultural context of the early
Mediaeval Europe during and after the Great Migrations.
