Ohridski
University of Sofia decided to tell
us the story of the unique literary records
of the Bulgarian Middle Ages, genuine treasures for
both Bulgarian and European culture. The book gives
a view on the birth of written works, composed by the
most prominent representatives of
Presláv,
Ohrid
and
Tarnovo Literary Schools:
Kliment
of
Ohrid,
Konstantin
of
Presláv,
Exarch Ioan,Chernorizets Hrabur, Presbyter
Grigori, Presbyter Kosma, Evtimi of Tarnovo, bishop
Kiprian, Grigori Tsamblak and others. The factor which
played the most important role in the destiny of those
cultural monuments is their keeping and preservation
not only in their home country but also the interaction
with other cultures beyond home borders.
The life of the remarkable works, written by
Bulgarian authors during the First
(681-1018)
and Second
(1185-1396)
Bulgarian kingdom is spectacular
-
there
are no saved originals of these works in Bulgaria. They
have left their home and embark on a migration journey
not of their own will. The wars and political collisions
destroy not only people but also the fruits of the human
thought
-
the books. Fate has decreed that the most part
of Bulgarian literary treasures would reach Russia and
would be saved due to the interest and attention of the
royal and spiritual authorities towards the writings of
the Bulgarian orthodox writers, a preservation done by
diligent unknown transcribers in Russian monasteries.
The treasures of the Bulgarian literature have been
saved twice on Russian land
-
once during the Middle
Ages and then again in 19th century. During 17th and

centuries with the spread of book printing the
interest towards the handwritten copies has decreased
and they were almost forgotten. During the first
half of 19th century in Russia there was a revival in
the interest towards ancient written records. One of
the brightest periods of Russian-Bulgarian cultural
relations from those days is marked with the works of
the researchers, and most of all the finders of forgotten
Bulgarian medieval masterpieces. Among those
intellectual figures the most outstanding ones are: K.
Kalaidovich,
S. Sheviriov, M.
Pogodin, archimandrite
Leonid, V. Grigorovich, A. Popov, V. Undolski, P.
Sirku,
A. Iatsimirski and many others.
The monographers wrote these lines hoping to provoke
the interest of the general public and a reading which is
not
indifferent,
because it is impossible for the tragic but
praiseworthy life of these remarkable Bulgarian works
not to touch those who read about its fateful moments.
This book tells how this yet small part of the rich literary

heritage of Bulgaria has survived and the exciting and
sometimes incredible turns their life took.
This work aims to address the general public and
therefore an informative style has been preferred. This
suggests that during the course of the
exposé
the most
important works of those authors, working in the vast
field of Slavonic studies is listed.
The written records of medieval literature need to
be noticed and respected by today s generations. They
plead to be remembered, because they will remain silent
if we do not mention them, if we do not study their

texts, if we do not leaf through their old pages. In the
course of time the voices of those medieval works who
tell us about the times of the two sovereign Bulgarian
kingdoms, when the culture was patronized by educated
statesmen such as Boris I, Simeon the Greatest and Ivan
Alexander, grew more silent. However, the culture is
always a tower of strength during hard times for the
country and its people. This mission of the written texts
is convincingly praised by St. Konstantin-Kiril: Without
books all nations are naked, because they cannot fight
weaponless with the enemy of their souls.
