CHILANDARI
Chilandari
is a Serbian monastery situated on the Greek peninsula of
Athos,
stretching
into the Aegean from the east end of Chalcidice in the length of 45km southeastwards. From
time immemorial, the peninsula was the place of congregation of monks, hence the name the
Holy Mountain. On the slopes of
Athos,
covered by thick woods and undergrowth, scattered
are monasteries, sketaes (independent monasteries or a group of cells) and solitary monastic
cells. The first among them on the north-east coast of the peninsula, some two kilometers from
the sea, is the monastery of Chilandari
-
one of a score of large monasteries in this remarkable
and autonomous region of Orthodox monasticism; the spiritual heart outside the body of its
nation /archimandrite Moses/.
The monks call Mt
Athos
the garden of Panaghia , which is an expression of the early
Athonite legend telling of the consecration of Mt
Athos
and the origins of monasticism on the
peninsula.
At the site of the one-time Greek monastery, abandoned in the face of piratic
encroachments, the monastery of Chilandari was restored by Great Serbian Zhupan Stefan
Nemanja (Simeon in monasticism) and his son
Rastko (Sava
in monasticism) in
1198.
In June
1198,
Byzantine Emperor Alexios
III Angelos
confirmed by a chrysobull that the monastery
of Chilandari was placed under the rule of Simeon and
Sava
-
to be an eternal gift to the
Serbs ; with this act, Chilandari was constituted as a Serbian monastery and the benefactor
legacy of the Nemanjic dynasty.
The benefactor s commitments were passed on, through centuries to come, to
subsequent Serbian rules. Despite the volatile political circumstances in Serbia and the
Balkans, the mother-country has always fostered the awareness of the significance of
Chilandari for the development of Serbian medieval spirituality and culture. It is through
Chilandari that Serbian culture established immediate contact with Greek civilization, and then
the history and culture of other nations, primarily Balkan and Slavic. Even nowadays, the
Chilandari source is considered to be thriving water and the Athonite garden the evergreen
garden of the Orthodox Serbian nation where its soul is rejuvenated and faith and hope
restored.
Chilandari is the birthplace of overall Serbian art and literacy. It is precisely in this
monastery that all books, the mother of all Serbian books, were written and
St Sava
is the
earliest Serb writer that I know of. Serbian poet Matija Beckovic once said that the nations
who had such a place could not disappear: whatever may befall them, it is from this seed that
they can be re-conceived .
Although the great anniversary of the eight centuries of the monastery was marked
against the background of a very delicate economic and geopolitical position, the greatest
minds both in the Serbian lands (Serbia, Montenegro and
Republika Srpska)
and the diaspora
rallied around Chilandari. The observance was of a working character and it reflected the
cohesion of the state and church over the quintessential issues of the present-day position of
the Serbian nation. Special attention was devoted to the restoration of monastic facilities and
the protection and study of its rich treasuries in the light of the findings of modern science and
art.
