IN THE WORKS OF SERBIAN PEDAGOGUES
BETWEEN TWO WORLD WARS
(1918-1941)
In Serbia between
1918
and
1945
the education was undoubtedly the one of
the vital institutional activities of the state. The institutions were predominantly
owned and conducted by the state, and they employed dozens of thousands of
educated staff. Thus, we might say that the education significantly shaped the
Serbian culture and science, i.e. the life and the work of Serbian society and people
in general.
On the other hand, there is a little doubt that the Serbian history of education
is still waiting-for a comprehensive research to come to grips with the education
and pedagogy between the two great wars
(1918-1941).
Namely, in spite of the fact
that there were some pedagogues who dealt with the theory of education and
pedagogy at the time, their endeavour has not been neither adequately evaluated,
nor critically assessed by contemporary pedagogy. For that reason, a
comprehensive research of pedagogical thought in Serbia should offer an important
fundament for contemporary thought, and nevertheless, influence the formation of
contemporary theory of education and pedagogy.
Distinguished Serbian pedagogues from the abovementioned period of time
significantly contributed to the theory of pedagogy, but also to the clarification of
the very notions and the scope of education and pedagogy as disciplines. Their
works mainly comprised shorter pieces, encyclopaedic and dictionary entries, and
short essays about certain pedagogical works. The most of the judgments displayed
are either overtly positive, or negative. Here we have in mind authors like J.
Miodragovic, P. Despotovic, A. Banovic,
N.
Dostanie,
V. Tesic,
N.
Potkonjak, J.
Redzepagic, V. Nedovic, Lj. Radulaski, and others.
Throughout the twentieth century, there appeared a number of books in
pedagogy, written by Serbian authors, as well as translations of works by renowned
international scholars. These works differed in their scientific approach, but they
were also conceived and written in different historical
époques.

These are just a few motifs to justify an attempt of comparative examination
of the work of the Serbian pedagogues in the period between the two world wars.
Such a work will include an evaluation and analysis of academic books from
pedagogy published in Serbia within the abovementioned time span.
The objective of juxtaposing the notions of education and pedagogy in
Serbian science between the two wars is in coming to terms with the two doctrines
that decisively shape the development of human personality. In realization of this
objective, the author paid a particular attention on distinguishing between the
notions of education and pedagogy. In doing so, she was guided by certain facts:

The topic of research is primarily focused on examination of the
phenomena of education and pedagogy between the two wars, not on the
phenomena as such.

Since the two categories often represent some pedagogical categories, the
author examined their use and meaning in the works of Serbian
pedagogues between the two wars. In some works the understanding and
the use of these categories are controversial, and the task of this work is
to come to terms with that. Education and pedagogy could be viewed as
pedagogical processes. However, the core of research of pedagogical
processes in present study is in organization of pedagogical work,
whereas in discussion on the very terms the focus is in their meaning.

One of the objectives the present study has is to recognize the use of
synonyms and homonyms in ideas of education and pedagogy in certain
works. Finally, the author analysed the cases in which different authors
agreed on various issues of pedagogy.
Since the research came to its conclusion, the author s preliminary hypothesis
that the notion of education prevailed over the notion of pedagogy in the studies of
Serbian scholars at the time, proved to be correct. However, the author also drew on
a number of important exceptions.
A number of distinguished scholars were involved in the discussion on the
above-mentioned topics between the two wars. Among others, let there be
mentioned the names of J. Miodragovic, M. Milosevic, V. Mladenovic, V. Bakic,
Lj. Protic, M.
Savie,
S.
Adzie.
The concurrence and disagreement in their attitudes
will be more noticeable if we place them in the context of certain orientations that
do not attract too much of scientific attention.

Understanding of M. Milosevic as representative of cultural-pedagogy.
Understanding of V. Bakic and Lj. Protic as representatives of Serbian
„Herbartism .

Understanding of S. Adzic and J. Miodragovic as representatives of
school known as Serbian Pestalozzians .

Understanding of the notions of education and pedagogy with Serbian
pedagogues of the New School represented by Vicentije Bakic and

The monograph Education and Pedagogy in the
WorL· of Serbian Pedagogues
(1918-1941)
is a voluminous, but
consistent work structured into five chapters. In the first part, the author
dealt with pedagogues that were active between the two wars in Serbia. In
the second chapter, she scrutinized the works of M. Milosevic, the most
prominent representative of cultural pedagogy in Serbia. The third
chapter elucidates the Serbian „Herbartism , and their understanding of
education and pedagogy. The fourth chapter deals with the influence of
the school called „Serbian Pestalozzians . The fifth part of the
monograph juxtaposes the views of Serbian pedagogues in the light of the
teaching on free education and the new school.
The monograph also provides the reader with conclusive remarks, as well as
with an extensive bibliography. If we take that into account,

monograph should be credited for the author s analytical skill, and well-elaborated
critical stance. The exposition of material is excellent, the author s interpretations
are convincing. Education and Pedagogy in the WorL· of Serbian Pedagogues
(1918-1941)
is a valuable contribution to the theoretical examination of the topics in
question.
