Documents related to the times of the First Serbo-Turkish
war
(1876-1877)
do not represent a large-scale material, as well as
those that treat the period marked by the Great Eastern Crisis. An
important part of the archivistic documentation has been damaged
during the Balkan Wars. In spite of the fact that no synthetic work
on this historical period exists
-
upon which the opposite sides, but
also the world-wide public was focused
-
the rich, although scattered
source material has been preserved. The First Serbo-Turkish war
has been presented by contemporaneous writers, domestic and
foreign participants as well as those who witnessed to the war-
related events; correspondents and reporters from country and
abroad, who left behind them historical writings and memoirs,
including various detailed notes in numerous diaries (war diaries
above all else), or in
publicistic
works, collections of archivistic material,
accounts of their travels, journals, booklets, commemorative volumes,
almanacs, state calendars, etc.
The Serbo-Turkish wars represented an object of a thorough
analysis undertaken by the native war historians, first of all, while
European and world researchers payed much less attention to this
issue. Thus has this question been tackled only marginally, and the
obtained results reflected mostly not more than a mere by-product
of their work effectuated on one of the topics that accidentally got
closely related to the treated problems.

surpass those different previously
mentioned sources in their quality, through interesting information
and remarks they offer. Curiously,
Bétanťs
reports have stayed
unknown to historiography so far, in spite of the fact they were
written for such a renomated Geneva daily journal.
Charles
Bétant
(1836-1908),
inhabitant of Geneva of Swiss
origin, lived and worked in Belgrade from
1867
to
1883,
first as a
Secretary of Prince Mihailo, and after his death as a Secretary of
Prince Milan, Secretary for the French language to the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs and Secretary of the Presidency of the Ministerial
Council.
Bétant
showed unhidden sympathies towards Prince Mihailo
Obrenović
and the entire Serbian people. He was remarkably well
acquainted with the existing situation in Serbia, and sent numerous
reports to the above-mentioned Geneva journal during the First
Serbo-Turkish war.
Charles
Bétanťs
reports surpass the major part of the
preserved notes related to the First Serbo-Turkish war due to the
fact that he performed no military function
-
as was the case with
the majority of other authors who treated this war in their texts
-
but
a civilian, engaged in different positions during his lenghty service
for the Serbian rulers, or in the duty of the Serbian government
official. That fact qualifies him at the same time as a writer in whom
trust can be placed on various grounds when it comes to description
of war-related events, their causes and consequences that had bearing
on both, the Principality of Serbia as well as its population. Features
of manifest subjectivity that marked the majority of the authors who
wrote about the previously mentioned war-related events are absent
from
Bétanťs
writings, due to the fact that he was a foreigner, above all
else, and someone who did not directly partake in military operations.
At the same time, being well educated, extremely intelligent and

intuitive, a
detail-prone observer who occupied the uncommonly
auspicious position,
Bétant
was able to detect issues that were at
disposition of small number of people only. Therefore, his articles
offer not only numerous and interesting descriptions, but portray
accurately the course of events in the field. As he maintained
excellent relations with Serbian court, as well as with diplomatic
circles, his letters depict faithfully and neatly the situation on the
internal political scene, but also the external political factors that
befell the Principality of Serbia.
Bétant
started writing his war reports on July 6lh
1876,
and
finished them on November

His basic motif that led him
to report regularly to the journal of Geneva was to try and prevent
the spreading of the news coming from different origins
-
generally
numerous disinformation or not enough valid information concerning
the course of war operations, that have already found their way to
the foreign press and were thus spreading among European public.
Consequently,
Bétant
reacted upon the malicious writings of foreign
reporters, incited by different reasons and on various occasions, and
aiming at protecting Serbian state and national interests, through
contesting the news those authors presented to their readers.

Vlasta
Petković,
originated before
1942,
on the occasion of the
ninetieth anniversary of the occurrence of war, for editing purposes
of the journal
Kanadski Srbobran.
