Resume
This book is an attempt to illustrate thoroughly, for the first time, the
personality and the scientific work of Mihailo
Dinić,
the Serbian academic and
professor at Belgrade University.
The biography offers many new data about his life and helps us understand
better the circumstances in which he created. Most of his achievements were the
results of the disclosure of new material in the archive of
Dubrovnik.
He was so
dedicated to his work that he created a new working method which was based on
careful study of all archival notebooks referring to one period in the past. In time,
he became one of the most distinguished experts of the
Dubrovnik
archive and his
working method was accepted by many scientists later on.
His contribution to the study of economic history marked the beginning of a
new stage in the study of this area of research, neglected so far. His contribution to
the science was mostly related to the development of mining in Serbian medieval
countries, but his valuable contribution was the knowledge of trade, craft, history
and origin of coins and of the old measure system.
Mihailo
Dinić
noticed the connection between the economic progress in the
late Middle Ages and the dynamic changes in the Serbian society. He left
numerous pages on different layers of Serbian medieval society. Up to some point,
he also took interest in the events which marked the cultural development in this
region. This refers to the use of Slovene letters
(Cyrilic
and Glagolitic), widespread
use of Serbian language, development of printing or archaic literature. He took
special interest in the past of Bosnian heretics. His important contribution to the
study of this subject was that the scientific view was prevailing.
Mihailo
Dinić
was a member of a small group of historians which was the
first in the world that started the intensive study of the connection between
expanded views of governmental ideology with other human activities. On the
other hand, his critical mind and unyielding attitude toward unscientific view of the
Past, revealed themselves
speciály
in his study of the battle of Kosovo. His
historiographie
personality is even more enriched by his work referring to the oral
folk tradition.
His abundant interest in historical geography can be partly explained by the
fact that he was knowledgable geographer. At the same time, he explained
successfully some of the key events that took place in the history of military and
Political life in medieval Serbia.
Mihailo
Dinić
was self-reliant. His work had a great influence on the
science of modern Serbian history in many ways. He contributed to the triumph of
the opinion that the past of our nation in the middle ages can be studied only by
thorough archival research. He introduced new subjects in the science, and
approached to the old ones more thoroughly than any of his predecessors or most
