Michał Rybiński
(1844-1905)
The Curator of the Physiographical Museum
of the Academy of Arts and Sciences
Michał Rybiński (Fig.
2)
was born on October
18, 1844
in the locality of
Błudniki
near
Halicz (Halych,
presently in western Ukraine). His parents names were
Szymon
and Balbina
née Zaleska.
Rybiński
received at least secondary education, possibly tech¬
nical, since being employed as a railway clerk he used to design some inventions just
for pleasure. Within the years
1873-1876
he worked in
Rzeszów
and then, until
1890,
in
Tarnopol (Ternopil,
presently in western Ukraine) and it was at that time when he mar¬
ried
Kazimiera Poraj-Malina,
who gave him two sons and two daughters. In
1891,
hav¬
ing separated from his wife and received a pension, he went for a short time to the USA.
After his return he lived in
Tarnów
and later both in
Tarnów
and
Kraków.
Within the
years
1893-1896
he worked as a preparatory in Edmund Reitter s entomological firm
in
Paskov
(Germ. Paskau) in Moravia, and when he came back to
Kraków
he obtained
the position of deputy curator in the Museum of the Physiographic Commission of the
Academy of Arts and Sciences (then translated as the Academy of Sciences and Letters).
He died of advanced tuberculosis on March
7,1905
in
Kraków,
and was buried in Rako-
wicki Cemetery (Fig. VI).
Rybiński
developed an interest in entomology when he was forty. He started as an
amateur and a self-taught researcher. Within the years
1884-1890
he built up a rich col¬
lection of beetles from northern Podolia (over
2300
species, almost
70
thousand spec¬
imens), which he sold to the Museum of the Physiographic Commission of the Acade¬
my of Arts and Sciences. The money he received he used to finance his journey to the
USA. Being still an amateur, he collaborated with eminent coleopterists, such as Marian
Łomnicki
in
Lwów
(Lviv, presently in western Ukraine), Stefan Stobiecki in
Lwów
(and
later
Kraków),
and Edmund Reitter. The latter employed him for two years in his ento¬
mological and publishing firm in Moravia. As a result,
Rybiński
became a professional
coleopterologist highly regarded in Central Europe. In
1896
he accepted an offer from
the Physiographic Commission and took a job in the Commission s museum in
Kraków.
Initially he worked as a preparatory but in November
1896,
after the death of Curator
Konstanty
Jelski, he was appointed deputy curator and assisted
Władysław Kulczyński,
an eminent arachnologist, who became an informal head of the museum.
While working in the Physiographic Museum Rybinski s main task was to deter¬
mine beetles and ordering the museum s collections. Within
10
years he determined
or controlled nearly a quarter of a million specimens of beetles (several thousand spe¬
cies). Doing his job
Rybiński
maintained contacts with other renowned scientific
insti-

tutions, especially in Vienna and
Paskov.
Additionally, within the years
1898-1900,
he
was delegated by the Physiographic Commission to carry out coleopterological research
on Chornohora (Black Mountain, presently Ukrainian part of the Eastern Carpathians).
The collections of beetles amassed personally by
Rybiński
comprise ca.
120
thousand
specimens (ca.
4
thousand species). The results of Rybinski s works were published by
the Academy of Arts and Sciences in
Kraków
within the years
1896-1903.
Based on ma¬
terials gathered by
Rybiński
other researchers described beetles not investigated before
(e.g. Lathridius rybinskii from
Tarnopol
and Cryphalus rybinskii from
Tarnów
-
de¬
scribed by E. Reitter). But
Rybiński
was not only an efficient explorer of coleopterofau-
na, but also an inquisitive taxonomist. He described dozen or so beetles then unknown
to science, especially those belonging to the Carabidae family (Nebria reitteri, Trechus
carpathicus, Trechus fontinalis), and also Staphylinidae (Atheta smolkai, Eudectus kul-
czynskii), Elateridae (Ludius ganglbaueri), Throscidae (Throscus laticollis) and other.
His most important achievement in the field of the taxonomy of beetles was the discov¬
ery of a new and unique
taxon
found on Chornohora Choleva
magnifica
(Fig.
18)
from
the Liodidae family, for which Edmund Reitter created a new
taxon,
the Rybinskiella ge¬
nus
(1906).
Prof.
Kulczyński
entrusted
Rybiński
with several responsible tasks, such as the or¬
ganization of an illustrative collection of Galician beetles designed for the Museum of
Wielkopolska
in
Poznań,
which he did in exchange for the particularly valuable Gen¬
eral Radoszkowski s collection of hymenoptera.
Rybiński
devoted last years of his life
(1902-1905)
to complete this transaction, and now the collection belongs to the Muse¬
um of Natural History of the Institute of Systematics and Evolution of Animals of the
Polish Academy of Sciences in
Kraków,
which is a legal inheritor of the Physiographic
Museum.
In
2005,
on the centenary of
Michał
Rybinski s death, his biography, achievements
and contribution to coleopterology in Central Europe were recounted by papers and re¬
ports presented at the following three scientific meetings: a session of the Commission
on the History of Science of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences in
Kraków
(March
23),
the 9th Symposium of Polish Carabidologists in
Laski
(23-25
June) and the Ukrain¬
ian-Polish
Entomologie
Conference in Lviv
(16-18
August).
