Summary
The work is devoted to the issue of musical transcription for a chamber ensemble
consisting of trombones. The issues connected with defining the term transcription
and questions of its heterogeneous understanding are dealt with in chapter one. The
chapter mentions the most important features of musical transcription that presently
characterize the performance practice as well as factors that significantly influenced
the development
ofthat
particular musical field in the course of music history.
The chapter also discusses the issue of unregulated copyrights of numerous works
which has negative effect not so much on the process itself but on the use of transcriptions
in practice. The historical development
ofthat
sphere of art also became subject of the
analysis. The author included the turn of the Renaissance and Baroque period, when
vocal music traditions were quickly overtaking some of the rules governing literature.
The role of verbal text
-
as a basis for musical art often imposing the terms of the work s
translation
-
was emphasized. This process took place when, for example, the
differences in the number of sounds in particular lines of a song forced alterations of the
musical text. That in turn led to a situation where musical transcription became an art of its
own. The turning point came with the development of instrumental music in the Classicist
period, when transcription took on a new form. The examples of transcriptions created by
Mozart that are mentioned in the book, are the first well known examples of the discussed
issue that were written as a result of a whim, pragmatism and economy. Another stage
-
closest to the transcriptions of today
-
is the 19th century and the Romanticism,
marked with musical colors, that defined a number of factors characterizing that
particular sphere of musical art
-
transcription. The second chapter of the work concerns
those elements of the historical development of trombone that directly influenced the
way the instrument was perceived from the perspective of an ensemble consisting of
several performers. Historical conditions form a basis for the understanding of the
contemporary role of trombones in orchestral and chamber music. Another chapter of
the work contains examples of musical works created for trombone ensembles. Most
of them are arrangements for a quartet, however recently we observe an increase in
popularity of arrangements for larger ensembles. Numerous symposiums, workshops
and courses play an important role in the process. Integral parts of such meetings
are musical performances of several dozens of instrumentalists. The presentation
of chosen works helps to point out the most important issues connected both with
compositional and performance skills that play an important role in the process

of creating transcriptions for a trombone quartet. The last chapter serves as a summary
of the work. It is devoted to the presentation of the most important phenomena
concerning performance practice. Trombone quartet is characterized by an exceptionally
advantageous sound in comparison with other homogeneous ensembles. Taking
into consideration the above mentioned features, it becomes evident that musical
transcription is also one of the most important elements of the contemporary pedagogy
in that particular musical discipline.
