Summary
The celebration of
600
years from the first written attestation of the
city of
Bacău,
in the document given on the 6th of October
1408
by Ale¬
xander the Good, the first big organizer of Moldavia

as Nicolae Iorga
called him
-
is the perfect occassion to present a full account of the accom¬
plishments in all the areas of human activity, from the economical one to
the socio-political, the cultural-artistic, the scientific and so on.
We believe it to be interesting, in this context, to mention the presen¬
ce of the personalities of
Bacău
in the highest scientific forum of our coun¬
try, namely the Romanian Academy. When we present the personalities of
Bacău
who were members of the Academy we take into consideration not
only the ones who were born in the modern County of
Bacău,
but also tho¬
se who we consider „adopted sons of the County, either by their ancestry
or by the continuous association of their name with this beautiful region.
In

years of existence of the Romanian Academy,

personalities
from
Bacău
entered the list of „immortals
— 23
of them were born in diffe¬
rent places within the
Bacău
County and the other

were „adopted sons .
Two of them
-
Jon Ionescu
de
la Brad and his brother Nicolae Ionescu,
although born in the town of Roman, they associated their name to the
„Model farm from Brad, which today is situated in the Commune
Negri
within the County of
Bacău
and after their death, they were buried
-
ac¬
cording to their wishes
-
in the necropolis of the families
Isăcescu
and Io¬
nescu from around the Brad hermitage. The other two have ancestors from
Bacău,
their parents being born in different parts of the County of
Bacău.

I. Popescu-Zeletin, born in
Bucarest, but
his
father, member of the Romanian Academy renowned in all Europe, Ion
Popescu-Zeletin, was born in the village of
Buda,
Răchitoasa
Commune, in
the County of
Bacău.
If at the beginning, in
1866,
only

personalities of the Romanian
culture who lived abroad were appointed members of the Romanian Lite¬
rary Society, the next year, in
1867,
members from
Muntenia
and Moldavia
were added.
It is justified pride for a small number of counties from our country to
be one of the areas from which men of letters were appointed by the com¬
mission of the High Interim Rulers to found a society whose main mission
was to compile The Dictionary and The Romanian Grammar. For
Bacău
the reasons to be proud were doubled by the fact that, as far as we know
up to now, it is the only county in Romania from which came two founding
members of the Romanian Academy, called in
1867
The Romanian Aca¬
demic Society. We are referring to the poet, prose writer and playwright
Vasile Alecsandri, who was included among the founding members on the
2nd of June
1867,
became honorary member of the Romanian Academic So¬
ciety on the 23rd of August
1871,
being the third personality to obtain this
prestigious title after Prince Carol the First, the learned bishop of
Buzău,
Dionisie Romano and the historian and politician Nicolae Ionescu, appo¬
inted founding member of the Romanian Academic Society, by order of
the Lord on the 20th of July
1867.
Titu
Maiorescu was appointed founding
member through the same order.
The third personality from
Bacău,
who became member of this high
cultural-scientific forum was the agricultural engineer Ion Ionescu
de la
Brad, appointed member correspondent of the Romanian Academic So¬
ciety in September
1871
and honorary member of the Romanian Acade¬
my in
1884.
In
1892
Constantin Climescu
became correspondent member
of the Romanian Academy, he was a mathematician renowned during his
time, also the rector of the University of Iassy from
1880,
being the first
personality originally from
Bacău
to hold such an important position at the
head of the oldest university in the Old Kingdom.
It is interesting to point out that the personalities from
Bacău
who
became members of the Romanian Academy, through their field of work,
covered all the areas of cultural-scientific life which were reflected in the

organization of the high
forum.
Among the

academicians from
Bacău,

were correspondent mem¬
bers,

were or are permanent members

come from the correspondent
members and one is elected to be directly a permanent member

this is
Mihail
Roller, imposed as a permanent member by the Communist regime
at the reorganization and purging of the Romanian Academy in
1948)
and

were or are honorary members of the Romanian Academy (coming from
the Romanians in the country or some who live abroad). Maybe we should
also point out that from the
27
members of the Academy from
Bacău,

were born in a rural area, some opening their eyes for the first time to a
sunset in the furthest parts of the county, such as Vasile
Pârvan
in the villa¬
ge
Perchiu, Hurueşti
Commune or Gheorghe
Vrânceană
in the
Valea Hogei
village,
Lipová
Commune and

of the members originally from
Bacău
were born in the urban area. We should emphasize the fact that among the
personalities from
Bacău
who were members of the Romanian Academy
there were two brothers, Nicolae Ionescu and Ion Ionescu
de la
Brad and
a father and a son Ion Popescu-Zeletin and
Radu
I. Popescu-Zeletin. It is
as important to mention that up to the present no woman, born in the
County of
Bacău,
entered the ranks of the „immortals of the Romanian
Academy.
We should also specify that in an „unofficial classification of our
country s counties by the number of Academy members, the county of
Bacău
is situated at the middle of this classification, that is in the third
cathegory of counties which have between

and
30
academicians.
Bacău
county is therefore situated at the upper limit of this classification with its
27
academicians.
We consider necessary, from a well-deserved respect for our ances¬
tors who honoured and still honour the Romanian science and culture and
also responding to our readers expectations, to mention the names of the
27
academicians from
Bacău
County, ordered by their year of birth, pre¬
senting the field of work in which they excelled and their title or titles

founding member, correspondent member, permanent member or hono¬

Bacău
who were or still are members of the
Romanian Academy, in the

tural-scientific forum, were and are members of foreign academies, from
Europe and U.S.A., as well as winners of very important prizes the most
important one being the Nobel Prize, which rewarded the scientific creati¬
on of the scientist George
Emil Palade.
Besides the fact that they forever entered the „rows of immortals of
the Romanian Academy, many personalities from
Bacău
also had other
dignities within the Romanian Academy. Some were presidents of scien¬

Five of the academicians
from
Bacău
also held the high position of
vicepresidents
of the Romanian
Academy. Those who had this high dignity were Nicolae Ionescu, Ion Simi¬
onescu, Vasile
Pârvan, Ion
Gheorghiu and George
Vrănceanu.
The scientist
Vasile
Pârvan
also held the important position of General Secretary of the
Romanian Academy. And, finally, a personality from
Bacău,
the scientist
Ion Simionescu, held the supreme position of president of the Romanian
Academy, in the tempestous years
1941
to
1944.
It is important to specify that, up to now, four of the permanent mem¬
bers of the Romanian Academy coming from
Bacău
were asked to present
a reception speech in front of the academic plenum. Chronologically these
were Ion Simionescu in
1913,
presenting the topic The evolution of scien¬
tific culture in Romania, with an answer given by the geologist
Ludovic
Mrazec,
Radu Rosetti
presented in
1935
the lecture Thoughts of bravery
in the Romanian past, with a laudatory answer from the historian
Alexan¬
dr
Lapedatu; in
1914
Vasile
Pârvan
held a speech in which he spoke highly
of his predecessor, speech entitled In
memoriam
Constantini
Erbiceanu,
with an appropriate answer from the great historian Nicolae Iorga and in

Constantin Drâmbă
presented the topic The astronomer Gheorghe
Demetrescu, with an answer given by the mathematician Nicolae Teodo-
rescu. The most beautiful reception speech presented by a personality from
Bacău,
in the assembly hall of the Romanian Academy was that of Vasile
Pârvan
in
1914,
that remained a turning point and a model of this type of
academic activity.
