Abstract
The history of
Lubaczów,
lying on the Polish and
Ruthenian
border, and
the areas included in
Lubaczów
district, has for ages been made by the Poles,
Ruthenians,
Ukrainians, Jews. The ethnic diversity has enabled to create a
special cultural atmosphere in the region, at the same time being the source of
numerous conflicts and division, difficult to overcome. The book by
Mieczys¬
ław Argasiński
shows the history of the region as well as its inhabitants dur¬
ing the Second World War and in the activity of the former Home Army un¬
derground units, soon after ceasing the warfare.
The book
Konspiracja w powiecie lubaczowskim w latach
1939-1947
(The Underground Movement of
Lubaczów
District in the Years
1939-1947)
was intentionally divided by its author,
Mieczysław Argasiński,
into three
parts according to chronological order. The first part includes the period of
1939-1941
when
Lubaczów
district was under the German and Soviet occu¬
pation, the second one presents the German occupation in the years
1941-
1941,
whereas the third part includes the years
1944-1947,
i.e. the Soviet
occupation.
The study by
Argasiński
is an example of committed biographic literature,
created
-
which should be emphasized
-
from the Polish viewpoint. The most
validating is the author s family relationship with
Lubaczów
district and the
experiences which he went through in those hard days. The viewpoint does
not question the objectivity of presenting the specific events and history of
Poles who did not have their doubts about making sacrifices for winning the
freedom of Poland.
The book under discussion has great documentary and educational values,
an example of another publication honouring, after many years, the heroes
whom the historiography of the Polish People s Republic tried to remove
from the social consciousness. Also, the book by
Argasiński
describes the
world that does not exist any more; the events of the Second World War made
the areas of
Lubaczów
district change for ever. All the ethnic groups suffered
an irreparable harm, the Jews were exterminated, the Poles and Ukrainians
were deported, numerous crimes and injustice took place, with bloodshed and
tears of innocent people. The book by
Argasiński
enables us, to a large extent,
to restore that reality, above all by analyzing the presented biographies, so it
makes a significant contribution to understanding the historical process that
formed the modern character of the region.
