SUMMARY
BUKOVINIAN PEOPLE IN POLAND. SOCIOLOGICAL
STUDY OF DEVELOPEMENT OF REGIONAL COMMUNITY
For ages
Bukovina
has been an area of colonization for people of various ethnic provenance,
including the Polish one. It is estimated that after the Second World War about
20 000
Polish people from
Bukovina
arrived in Poland. They mostly settled down in the so called
Recovered Territories. The main issues of the dissertation explore subjective transformations
of the
postmigrant
Bukovinian group towards regional community and participation of
tradition in these processes. The analysis is based on the following concepts: tradition, social
developement, regional community and subjectivity.
The concepts used include the elaboration in a sociological humanistic orientation, which
emphasizes the subjective character and creative-interpretative nature of a human being. The
way the research problems are conceptualised shapes the dissertation into the monography
which not only integrally presents chosen phenomenon but also makes it possible to some
conclusions about the broader socio-cultural areas to which this phenomenon belongs. The
dissertation aims at answering the question about the meaning of tradition in the processes
of subjective transformations of Bukovinian group in Poland. Thus, the object of the analysis
is relations between the multidimensionally (that is integrally
-
taking into consideration
tradition as a social transmission, social heritage and an attitude alike) understood Bukovinian
tradition and processes of forming Bukovinian regional community in western Poland.
The empirical basis of the elaboration is constituted mainly by materials collected during
intervievs and analyses of papers of Bukovinian organization in Poland. They are complemented
by participant observations,
análisis
of repertoire of Bukovinian folk groups, and Bukovinian
exhibitions. Nowadays, in Poland there are

Bukovinian organizations, which associate
approximately
500
members. There were
114
intervievs conducted in Lubusz, Greater Poland
and Lower Silesian Voivodeshipes, both in rural and urban milieu.
The provided analysis of the social occurences (namely, the social activities, situations
and events in which Bukovinian people are or were involved) proves that subjectivity of the
Bukovinian community is conditioned by two kinds of structural factors. The first category
of them is associated with structural features of contemporary Poland, and the second
one with features of a socio-cultural stucture of the pre-war
Bukovina.
In the light of the
analysis conducted, it appears that in the former structure people seek an opportunity to act
subjectively (main features of this
macrostructure
are the empowerment of the Polish society

and macrostructural cultural trends which positively valorize local and regional specificity
according to the saying small is beautiful! ), whereas in the latter structure socio-cultural
capital for subjective activities is sought (the function of capital is attributed to the widely
understood Bukovinian tradition). Interaction of the opportunities with this capital induced
the subjectivity of Bukovinian people, which provides the basis for a number of occurences
(like collective pro-Bukovinian activities undertaken by members of the post-migrational
milieu), and which effected the formation of Bukovinian social movement. Generalizing the
conclusions, we should say that the collective activities of Bukovinian people result in the
social change that means the transformation of Bukovinian society. Moreover, this process
takes form of the developement which is subjective in character.
Bukovina
and the category of
being referred to as Bukovinian associated with the region are located in the symbolic centre
of the society subjected to the analyses.
Bukovina
is characterized by socio-cultural phenomena
linked with
Bukovina,
features of nature characteristic of the region and the person who is a
member of the Bukovinian society (defined as
Bukowińczyk).
The empirical data presented in the dissertation confirm the conclusions of other
authors concerning
individualisation
of inhabitants of western Poland. Thus, the Bukovinian
community is defined through the use of category of similarity (that is, criteria of belonging
are constructed in a subjective way, were not based on existent structural divisions), which
results in potential openness of this society. In that context it is worth to underline the fact
that indigenous traditions of settlers in the Western Teritorries were not completely given up.
Another interesting conclusion is that attachment to tradition does not need to imply sole
preservation of social order. Firstly, reviving the tradition can be the fundation of social change
(forming new social structures). Secondly, developing Bukovinian community can serve as the
example of an attempt at overcoming this influence of group tradition, unambiguously closing
within a collectivity. Being referred to as Bukovinian is recognized as a significant category of
identity but does not influence the isolationism of the social group or the individual (that is, a
member of this social group). In the contemporary developmental processes of the Bukovinian
community tradition is cultural capital of the group and performs a function of strengthening
group identity. Simultaneously, through underlining the traditional values concerning social life
which are universal in character (like tolerance, respect for other people and play values), this
community is receptive to outsiders. Thus, maintaining the myth of tolerant and multiethnic
Bukovina
is a kind of creative continuity of Bukovinian ideas from before over a hundred of
years.
