August Wilson counts among
America s greatest playwrights
—
on Broadway and critical acclaim
including New York Drama Critics
Circle Awards, Drama Desk Awards,
Tony Awards, and two Pulitzer
Prizes. This revised edition of
Understanding August Wilson pro¬
vides a comprehensive view of the
thematic structure of Wilson s plays,
the context of American drama,
and the distinctively African Ameri¬
can experiences and traditions that
he dramatizes.
Mary L.
Bogumil
argues that
Wilson gave voice to disfranchised
and marginalized African Ameri¬
cans who were promised a stake in
the American dream but found their
access blocked. The author main¬
tains that Wilson wished not only
African American life but also to
shed light on the atavistic connec¬
tion African Americans have to
their African ancestors.
Bogumil
explains that the playwright s work
both perpetuates and subverts the
order to expose the distinct differ¬
ences between white American and
African American experiences.
Included here are a revised intro¬
duction; revised chapters on Ma
Rainey s Black Bottom, Fences,
}oe Turner s Come and Gone, The
Piano Lesson, Two Trains Running,
and Seven Guitars; and new chap¬
ters on King Hedley II, Jitney, Gem
of the Ocean, and Radio Golf. In
addition the volume contains mate¬
rial from interviews with seminal
figures in Wilson s personal and
professional life:
dramaturg
Todd
Kriedler; Penumbra Theater s co-
founder and director Lou Bellamy;
and Wilson s friend of forty years,
the late poet Chawley P. Williams.
