SUMMARY
1
he Romantic
Arbëresh
(
Arbëresh-ë
-
Albanians living in
Italy translator s note) literature is contemporaneous with Euro¬
pean Romantic Movement in literature. Therefore, the opinion
that the rhythm of the stylistic epoch of Romanticism in the
Albanian literature and culture lagged behid does not hold. In
addition, the literature of
Arbëresh
Romanticism inaugrates the
period of modern Albanian literature, by placing man and natyre
in the very crux of artistic works. Recapturing the past of na¬
tional history, bisedes being a question of the rhythm of the sty¬
listic epoch of Romanticism, was also a major desideratum of
the literature of a people fighting for its physical and spiritual
survival, defying thus the age-long moves towards estermination
of one ethnic entity in the geography of Europe, namely towards
eradication of a very ancient culture. No wonder that the
Arbëreshs,
including the greatest among them,
Jeronim
De Rada
(1814-1903),
had striven to deal with the antiquity of their myths,
as well as other cultural relics, in their literary output, but also
int
their tracts, essays and their scientific papers and political-social
pamphlets.
The Romantic poems of our great
Arbëresh
mark an artis¬
tic sublimation of Albanian achievements
int
the realm of spirutual
heritage, not only due to their artistic value, but also their
magnetude, not anly because of their artistic gist and radiation,
but also their poetic geograpy, not only due to their concern with
history, but also devotion to artistic treatment of the eventd and
celebrities of national history of the Albanians. While the Euro¬
pean contemporaties of the
Arbëresh poet
revist history looking
for sensantional literary and artistic topics, the
Arbëresh
history
looking for sensational literary and topics, the
Arbëresh
Jeronim
De Rada
treads back into history in a bid to sum up the unacco¬
mplished historical goal of the Albanians
-
freedom of their fa¬
ther land.
The poems of our
Arbëresh
are contamporaneous With the

their artistic achievement too. This point, considered
m
the body
of this book-length study, is further proven by the presence of
this poems in theartistic and cultural cirles of contemporary Eu¬
rope. The poetic structure of this his long poems, organized with¬
out any pre-definded and restnctived pattern, imbued with fig¬
ures of thought, with contradicted thespirit and norms of Classi¬
cism, bespeak a great innovator and artist, whose poems bestow
themost supreme will upon the legacy of the spiritual culture of
the Albanians, as evidenc to the existences of a time- the artistic
output.
Jeronim
de Rada s
poems are both the hallmark of the
rhythm of the stylistic epoch of European Roamnticism and an
original offspring of the Albanian Romanticism. The geography
of his poems entity is not confined by the singularity of their
ethnic background. On the contraty, while leading an autonomous
Ufe
within the geography of the Albanian poetic conception, the
poems lead such a life of their own within the European artistic
space, too.
The Albanian literature of the
pre-
Romanticism
ege
was
replete with verbal figures of the latin and Oriental literatures, in
a bid to meet requirements of accuracy of thoung, be it heavenly
or altruintic in bearing. Such a barrenness of poetic figures had
obviated the urgency of
a neë
art- meaningful, vital and down-to-
earth- whose features emerged both in the art of the Albanian
folk tradition and in the contacts of the cultures and artistic val¬
ues of other European nation. In this respect, the poems of the
Arbëresh de
R^ada echo a new objective in our literature, high¬
lighting the folk tradition heritage and the framework of artistic
values of this heritage, on the one side, and contacts with the
modern European tradition, on the other side. Rare are the Alba¬
nian men of letters who were so proficident in both the art of
the folk tradition and the achievements in the
reami
of artistic
output of the European cultures.
It has been remarked
a propos
the rhythm of the stylistic
epoch of Romanticism that it has created and revived cult. This
is made evident in the poems of our
Arbëresh,
too. Nevertheless,
ëhile
his European contemporaries were keen on seeing that pri¬
ority was laid on artistic treatment, this was not always the case
with our poet. While in the literature of European Romanticism

revived so to mythi¬
cize history and to make a cult out of the historical hero rather
than create resemblances, with the
arbëresh
poet the return to
the past of national history, especially to the celebrated epoch of
Skënderbeut (Scanderbeg,
of resemblances, on the one side, and
establishment of the geographical picture of the history of the
pnod the poet lived in, on the other side. To put it in a nutshell,
the historical past and the consummations of artistic parables
rooted in national history
Jeronim
De Rada

of the hero, not even in this celebrated poem Scanderbeccu

pa-faan, bur renders the whole picture of this period. He does
not portray the natioanl hero in mythical dimensions, but does
instead strike similarities between periods of time, for which the
Albanians of this time were in such a desperate need.
Jeronim
De Rada
does not depict the hero of physical and spiritaul hy¬
perboles
-
although these features are not altogether lacking in
this poems
-
but does indeed foster a full picture of the atmo¬
sphere of the events of
Moti
i Madh
(August Age), as in the
epoch of
Skënderbeu
termed by the
Arbëreshs.
Our poet com¬
posed his poems in his mother tongue, in a bid to demonstrate
the capacity of Albanian to communicate at a European level. It
is no wonder, therefore, that in an apostle of the famous maxim:
great works in one s mother tongue. Moreover, not
ony
has our
poet penned his poems in the
Arbëresh
vernacular, but he has
organized also two linguistic
/
language congresses, so as to stan¬
dardize it (the
Arbëresh
dialect, translator s note)
nad
acquaint
the civilized Europe with the antiquity of his own people. With
regard to poetical structure of this poems, the views on the pos¬
sibilities of setting the
Arbëresh
dialect as a standard norm, now
out-of-date, do not weigh.
The Eufronpean cultural and scientific opinion has commu¬
nicated with the Albanian tradition- with the riets, history, and
Albanian folk art- through
Jeronim
De Rada s
acclaimed work
(Rapsodi

1866.
Scholars of Albanian folklore remark
that the very mode of organization of folkloric material in his
work provides evidevce to his artistic matyrity and profound
knowledge about popular art, and offers a guiding torch to ap-

the poet s artistic and

sensitivity. Our celebrated
scholar, Ms. Elena Gjika (a contemporay of
De Rada
living Ro¬
mania; Translator s note), recommended this Work of
Jeronim
De Rada
to European cultural and scientific circles, as a contri¬
bution to a more prefound and factual acquaintance

the
Ufe
and aspirations of the Albanians.
Jeronim

founder of the Albanian press. He
published an outlet of
grat
importance for his co-ethnics and the
Italian public. His newspaper
L Albanese d Italia
(
The Italian
Albanian) echoed the events, circumstant, matters that affected
the Albanian question in the wake of events and circumstances
in Europe. He in considered founder of the first periodical in the
history of Albania press. The peridocal Fjamuri
і
Arbërit
(
The
Albanian Flag) is the best record of the poet s commitment to the
Albanian cause. More striking becomes this masterpiece viewed
from the present, given the fact that the poet was living in a
diaspora cut off from the national geography; moreover, virtu¬
ally four centuries had elapsed sine the diaspora had ceased to
have any link with the fatherland of their predescessores; one
should have in mind, furhermore, the inexorable pressures ex¬
erted on the
Arbëreshs
to assimilate with the lacal population (i.e.
Italians; translator s note) and to make a conversion (from East¬
ern Orthodox to Roman Catholicsm; translator s note), as well as
to adopt a Latin mode of life. In his periodical, the poet recordec
the most signoficant events of Albanian
Ufe
and of the time; th<
periodical provided asource of information
-
cultural, poUtical
and historical
-
to numerous cultural, poUtical and scientific circle:
of contemporary Europe. Fjamuri
і
Arbërit
is a pioneering pe
nodical in the history of our press.
Jeronim
De Rada
was organiezer of two linguhstic congresses,
aiming not only at standardization of the language, but at bring¬
ing the ancient tradition and the linguistic background of a people
to the world s attention. He penned agrammar of Albanian and
published it in hisson s name.
De Rada
composed his major works
in Albanian, thus testifying to a Titanic effort to lay the languaege
in the foundations of the nantional existence. He is author of the
first lyrical navel in the modern Albanian Uterature.

De Rada
wrote
Rëfjme të Arbërit
(Albanian Stories), or as the poet had
Labelled it
Katët Histori
(Four Stories)
(1848),
each one consti¬
tuting a unique tragedy, perhaps the first teaching on tragedy in
our modern art. He composed his major work, or the epic of
Moti
і
Madh (August Age), as is the gloriues time of
Skënderbeu
called by the
Arbëreshs,
namely Scanderbeccu
i pa-faan
(The
Ill-fated Scanderbeg), in fivevolumes, although the poet had
originally planned twelve volumes
(1884-1889).
Jeronim
De Rada s poteical
works constitute the
fondations
and the acem of his artistic achievements, which have not to this
very date been outdated, nor are they insignificant
m
aesthetic
and lietrary terms. His works composed in Albanian furnish the
basic material for the study of the poetics of this artistic output.
It is a poetics that canjot be framed within the norms of a stylistic
rhythm alone, a poetics that cannot be summed up within a single
poetic norm, although it is an offspring of romanticism, and,
consenquently, blends all the diversity of the poetics of this sty¬
listic epoch.
The language of
De
Rada s works is the vernacular of the
Arbëresh
area, which means the linguistic standard of the Albanias
Middle Ages. Much energy and consideration are required to
understand this language perfectly, to appreciate it and communi¬
cate with it. Transcriptions, transliterastions, and adaptions of
this work are lacking; the more in number they would be the
better for the litetraty work, for the evaluation and appreciation
of
Jeronim
de
Rada s major work. A critical edition of our
Arbëresh s oeuvre
is still pending.
