Stewart Brown and Ian McDonald present a multi-faceted portrait
of the significance of cricket to the literature of the Caribbean
and the attraction of Caribbean cricket to the world outside. With
poems, calypsos, stories, extracts from novels, plays, essays, speeches,
memoirs and cricket journalism, the editors show cricket inhabiting
all areas of the Caribbean imagination.
From its expression at the highest level on the global field of play, to
the no less titanic struggles on the bumpier fields of the village or
the sugar estate, this is a celebration of those who forged an art out
of a game, those who transformed a colonial sport into the cutting
edge of Caribbean nationalism, and those who, in the
1970s
and
80s,
changed forever the nature of the game. Over the anthology s editors
hovers the benign ghost
ofthat
great West Indian C.L.R. James, and
The Bowling Was Superfine is not least a worthy act of homage to the
writer whose Beyond a Boundary first revealed the convergence of
Caribbean being and cricket. With eighty-eight contributors from
Sir Learie
Constantine
to Jean Binta Breeze, this is as near to a run
feast as writing can get.
Stewart Brown is a poet, artist and editor of several anthologies as well as
critical studies of Derek Walcott, Kamau Brathwaite and Martin Carter. He is
Reader in Caribbean Literature at the University of Birmingham.
Ian McDonald is
Trinidadian
by birth and Guyanese by long residence and
adoption. He is author of

Hummingbird Tree, which was adapted for
television by the BBC. He has published four collections of poetry and a play.
