Summary
The authors of the monograph Highlights of Old
Raska
presented and appro¬
ached as scholars to the historical processes of the oldest Serbian state and cultural-
historical heritage of the Serbs, as well as the life of its inhabitants, starting from the
8th century. With texts and visual supports, they presented the process of the settle¬
ment of Serbian tribes on the territories between the rivers
Drina
in the west,
Tara
and
Piva
in the south, Ibar in the east and West
Morava
(Zapadna)
in the north, followed
by the establishment and development of the Serbian state, its spirituality, architec¬
ture, painting and literature. A large number of old churches, monasteries, old towns
and fortifications confirm this:
Ras, Maglie,
Brvenik,
Milesevac,
Ostrik;
as well as
Djurdjevi
stupovi, Studenitsa,
Mileseva, Sopocani
and many other important cultural
and sacral monuments, some of which are listed as world heritage.
Old
Raska
is the territory whence a powerful Serbian state emerged, and where,
from the 12th to the end of the 14th century, the political, public, economic, cultural
and social life of the Serbs bloomed. Property owners, the Church and the ruler owned
the land. After the Serbian army was defeated in the battles of Maritsa in
1371
and
Kosovo in
1389,
parts of Serbian territory were possessed by the Turks; the rest was
taken by the mid
1
4th century.
From the middle of the 15th century until the liberation of Old
Raska
from the
Turkish occupation, Christian Serbian culture and tradition were suppressed by Isla¬
mic efforts, as is also presented in the monograph.
After the long and persistent struggle of the Serbian people, particularly in the
19th and 20th centuries, Old
Raska
was liberated from the Turkish authority, along
with other Serbian countries. However, this central part of the Serbian state, around
which the other Serbian territories rallied during the Nemanjic period, has lacked a
synthesis regarding its role in the past. The monograph is therefore aimed at filling the
gap and presenting the total importance of the cultural-historical treasures of Old
Raska
and the Serbian people.
Highlights of Old
Raska
consists of an introduction and three chapters. The
introduction explains the significance and different segments of the cultural heritage
and points out the geographical, geopolitical and territorial features of Old
Raska.
Chapter One treats the development of the mediaeval Serbian state, with the
focus on the region of Old
Raska.
Several topics are discussed: the arrival and settle¬
ment of the Serbs on this territory, the development of the zupas (districts) and of the
state thereafter, the establishment of settlements and towns, including fortifications,
types of equipment, forts and their garrisons, wars and historical processes after the
battle of Kosovo until the final liberation from the Turks in
1912.
After they settled the territories along the
Lim, Tara, Raska,
Ibar, Moravitsa,
West
Morava,
Rzav Rivers and the upper stream of the
Drina,
the Serbs established
their state there; the process lasted from the 7th to
10*
centuries.
During the settlement of these territories, the process of the disintegration of
clans accelerated, leading to the formation of larger political and military formations,
by the Icnezes and afterwards by the zupans . Tribal alliances, with all characteristics
of a state, were induced by the social and historical conditions, both internal and
external. The process of the creation and development of the state was rather slow,
taking several centuries, and certainly undermined by the opposing interests of the
knezes , which is corroborated by the Byzantine sources.
365
Serbian tribes had been struggling for several centuries for the establishment
and strengthening of their state organization before
Stephan Nemanja
entered the
political scene in Old
Raska
and adjacent regions. Through alliances and separately,
they created their principalities, the first of which was created to the west of the Dina-
rides (Duklja at the valley of the rivers of
Zeta
and Moraca, Travunija from
Dubrov¬
nik
to the Gulf of
Kotor, Zahumlje
from the
Neretva
to Zaledje and
Dubrovnik
and
Pagania
from the
Cetina
to
Neretva)
.
Stephan
Nemanja
(1166-1196),
later the great zupan of
Ras,
emerged on the
Serbian political scene in the second half of the 12th century. He succeeded in his
attempt to gather the major part of the mediaeval Serbian states into one, strengthen
his power and lay the foundations of the state which would become one of the most
powerful in Europe by the 14th century. During the rule of Tsar Dusan
(1331-1355),
the Serbian borders were set at
Remeta
and the Gulf of Corinthia. Following his death,
the Serbian state gradually weakened and eventually fell under the Turkish authori¬
ty in the mid
1
5th century.
After the battle of Kosovo, the Serbian state survived for
70
years, however, as a
vassal state to Turkey. By the agreement of
1392,
Vuk Brankovic
conceded the Turks
the right to use certain forts and traveling communications in
Raska.
At the beginning
of the 15th century, Turkish garrisons were settled in Zvecan,
Jelec,
Gluhavica and
Brskovo. For more than
50
years, the Turks prepared the territory of eastern
Raska
as their stronghold for penetration into Bosnia. During their campaign to the west in
the mid-
1
5th century, they had to win over numerous well-defended posts and forts in
the western parts of
Raska.
The conquered Serbian lands the Turks divided, according to their administra¬
tive division, into sanjaks , nahies and judicial units. The Turkish feudal class was
comprised of spahies , among whom there were Christians as well. The ordinary peop¬
le, so-called
raya,
were forced to obedience, even to humiliation in return for privile¬
ges granted to them after conversion to Islam. However, some parts of the population
slowly and unwillingly accepted the new way of life and taxes, such as the cattle bree¬
ders from
Stari Vlah,
who would move to the hills when the Turks plundered their
areas. This forced the Turkish authorities to grant them privileges they had never
granted before. During the Austro-Turkish wars in the 18th century, the Serbs rioted
against the Turks, which consequently led to great migrations of the Serbian people.
Serbia emerged autonomous after the First and Second Serbian Uprisings
(1804-
1815).
Although the authors have treated all the important historical processes of the
second half of the 19th century, they have focused on the Serbian-Turkish wars of
1876-1878.
Despite the fact that Serbia was formally recognized as an independent
state at the Congress of Berlin in
1878,
parts of Old
Raska
remained occupied until
1912,
when they were liberated after almost five centuries under Turkish control.
The liberation of Old
Raska
from Turkish rule was included in all Serbian war
plans from the early 19th century. It was not before October
1912
that Old
Raska
and
Kosovo and
Metohija,
as well as the entire Balkans, were liberated in the joint offen¬
sive of the allied Balkan states (Serbia, Bulgaria, Montenegro and Greece) against Tur¬
key. Having joined the Balkan Alliance, Serbia and Montenegro decided to liberate
the afore-mentioned parts of Serbia, regardless of the obligations imposed on Serbia
by Prince Milan s agreement with Austria-Hungary. The course of events in the second
half of the 19th and the first decade of the 20th century showed that the Eastern Que¬
stion could not be solved either by agreements among great powers or by the Sultan s
reforms, but only by arms. The Great Powers, with the exception of Russia, tried to
obstruct the attempt of the two Serbian states. Since the individual warnings failed,
on October
8, 1912,
the envoys of the six great powers presented a collective demarc¬
he to Belgrade, Sophia, Cetinje and Athens. They pointed out that, regardless of the
366
outcome of armed conflict between the Balkan allies and Turkey, the Great Powers
would not allow any change of status quo in the Balkans, as well as their intention of
taking control of the implementation of the reforms envisaged by the Ottoman Empi¬
re. In their reply to the demarche, dated October
13,
the Balkan allies openly said
that they trusted in the Great Powers benevolence, but not in the Turkish promises,
which unfortunately lead them to no other option but war. On account of her preten¬
sions to a drive East, Austria was constantly considered a threat to the Serbian state
and its western borders. However, the Turkish defeat in the Balkans would annul that
threat and create conditions more favorable for opposing Austria-Hungary.
Some segments of World Wars One and Two, important for Old
Raska,
are also
presented.
Chapter Two treats sacral art: churches, monasteries, treasuries, and other
monuments of the cultural heritage, presenting their creative endeavor both from the
earliest periods of the Serbian state and after its fall under the Turkish authority. The
outstanding qualities of Serbian sacred architecture, the frescoes, objects of applied
arts, the richness of scripts and other hidden places are given special attention. The
most important monuments of the Nemanjic period have been located on the territo¬
ry of Old
Raska:
Djurdjevi
Stupovi
in
Ras, SS
Peter and Paul in
Bijelo Polje,
Djurdjevi
Stupovi
near
Berane,
Studenitsa,
Mileseva,
Sopocani,
Gradac,
St. Nicholas at
Banja
near
Priboj,
St.
Achilleus
in Arilje. They are followed by sacral monuments in Dobrun
and other places in the valleys of the rivers
Lim, Drina, Uvac, Ibar
and West
Morava.
Of no less significance are the monuments erected during Turkish rule, such as the
church of Holy Trinity near Pljevlja, Nikoljac, Kumanica, Uvac and others, known for
their manuscripts and fostering of sacral art and spirituality among the Serbs. At the
same time, the importance of monuments of Islamic art, such as mosques, inns,
madrasahs (Moslem religious secondary schools), log watchtowers, etc. is also men¬
tioned.
Chapter Three is dedicated to patriarchal culture and refers to folk life and
customs and their manifestations in society. The development of cattle breeding,
mining, agriculture and trade both at home and in a wider area facilitated the blos¬
soming of the Serbian mediaeval state on the cultural, economic and political plan.
This important role of Old
Raska
has been preserved even into modern times, as the
authors elaborate in detail and in connection with the general course of events of the
time in Europe, the Balkans, the Mediterranean and Asia Minor. Old
Raska,
the crad¬
le of Serbian statehood and culture, remained in the consciousness and tradition of
the Serbs, helping them not only to survive,
-
a stimulus past, present and future.
Old
Raska
is the cradle of Serbian patriarchal culture, which contributed to the
progressive development of spiritual, patriotic, social and political life. All the issues
were worked out together, within the family, clan or tribe. However, the role of the
state, church and national assemblies has not still been properly highlighted. These
assemblies, with their economic, political and social importance, stimulated the foste¬
ring of domestic industry, development of folk costumes and preservation of folk dan¬
ces, songs and music played on traditional instruments. Folk life implied numerous
customs, rituals and performances, all of which bear unavoidable lessons and mes¬
sages important for the development of modern folk life.
The monograph Highlights of Old
Raska ,
as a synthesis of Serbian tradition,
has found the best way to present to the public, both domestic and international, the
entire cultural heritage of Old
Raska.
It shows how the Serbs have contributed to the
world heritage, which has often been neglected nowadays. Presenting the monuments
of this part of Serbia to the wider public, the monograph will certainly contribute to
the development of tourism in Serbia.
