Summary
Czech participation in the American civil war is a chapter little known in the
American historiography, as well as the Czech.401 The vast majority of the hun¬
dreds of compatriots who served in the war enlisted in the Union army. This fact
seems to be logical, as most of the Czech immigrants settled in the Northern
states. Geographical distribution of the migrations, however, was not the only
reason. Mass emigration from Bohemia and Moravia started in the 1850s. Czechs
had lived in the United States only several years when the war started, and they
did not have enough time to become acculturated to the society of the South.
They abhorred slavery as a great evil of the ideal free America, and disliked the
idea of secession from the American Union. The election of
1860
meant a deci¬
sion between Lincoln and Douglas for the Czechs. The
anüslavery
attitude was
most obvious in the case of the settlers in the slave states. Czechs and Moravians
in Texas were persecuted as supporters of the black Republicans, while their
compatriots in St. Louis entered mostly German militia. This would later provide
critical help to keep the city in the Union.
With the exception of prewar company of Lincoln Riflemen of Slavonic Ori¬
gin, the Czechs were unable to create their own ethnic unit, even on a company
level. The greatest number of their countrymen served in mostly German 26th
Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment, and in the 22nd Iowa Volun¬
teer Infantry Regiment. Smaller groups and individual soldiers could be found in
a number of other units, including the 8th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment
and the 6th Regiment Iowa Volunteer Cavalry. Unlike many representatives of
other ethnic minorities, the Czechs lacked influential figures who could be ap¬
pointed to the rank of General. The highest rank any Czech received was that of
Lieutenant Colonel. This was held by Anthony
Pokorny
from the 178th New York
Volunteer Infantry Regiment, as well as by John
Pilsen,
the chief of artillery of the
Mountain Department.
As the war progressed, American Czechs became frustrated by factors such
as military draft and economic hardships of the war. The situation was much
more difficult in the South, where the economy became disrupted. In addition,
the Czechs were literally forced to enter the Confederate army. Many of these im¬
pressed soldiers demonstrated their relationship to the Confederacy by desertion
and in some cases also by joining the Union army. Draft-dodging and desertion
occurred also among the Czechs on the Northern side, but only on a small scale.
Later generations emphasized Czech support for Lincoln s National Union party
in the Presidential election of
1864,
but one of the two existing Czech-American
newspapers supported Fremont s Radical Democrats.
Participation in the war was an important symbol of Czech-American patri¬
otism. It lived in numerous stories published in Czech-language almanacs for
decades, and was commemorated on meetings of veterans. The most dominant

is a statue of a Czech
Union soldier. Hand in hand with commemoration was also growing idealization
and building of myths. Stories on high rank Czech officers appeared, while the
massacre of pro-Union Texan Germans on the
Nueces
River was usurped by the
Czechs for themselves.
This edition is the first attempt to acquaint broader public with the topic of
Czech soldiers in the American civil war. The main part of the edition is com¬
posed from letters written by
Jan Pospíšil,
a private of

22nd Iowa Volunteer In¬
fantry Regiment. These forty letters represent unique source in Czech language.
The letters document everyday life of a common soldier of the war. Several other
handwritten sources exist. Some of them were already written in English. Unfor¬
tunately, their information value is limited. Therefore, the rest of the edition is
composed of letters published during the war in Czech-American newspapers.
The most important representatives were chosen:
František Kvapil,
a private from
the 26th Wisconsin regiment,
Jan Zajíček
from the 8th New York regiment and
Karel
Risenfeld from the 8th Iowa cavalry. The letters focus not only on the war
and conducted battles, but also on broader issues including relations to Ameri¬
cans and Germans, and challenges to Czech patriotism in 19th century USA
