The history of Russia is often considered as if diat immense country
had always been an isolated continent. However, at the time of its rise
as a nation, it was politically a province of die Mongol Empire, whose
capital was in Central Asia; and ecclesiastically, it was a dependency
of the Orthodox Patriarchate of Constantinople, or Byzantium. This
book describes the role of Byzantine (predominandy ecclesiastical)
diplomacy in die emergence of Moscow as die capital of Russia in
die fourteendi century, and die cultural, religious and political ties
which connected die Nordiern periphery of the Byzantine Ordiodox
Commonweakh with its centre in Constantinople.
The princes of Moscow, dynasdcally and culturally die successors
of die early medieval princes of Kiev, struggled widi several com¬
petitors, particularly die Grand-Princes of Lidiuania, in dieir attempts
at gadiering die Russian lands around diemselves. Byzantium, in
making Moscow die religious capital of die country, assured its
eventual triumph, whereas Lidiuania, and die Russian principalities
which it controlled, was integrated into die powerful Roman Cadiolic
kingdom of Poland. These events shaped die later history of Eastern
Europe, and particularly die turbulent and tragic relations between
Russia and Poland, Ordiodoxy and Roman Cadiolicism.
However, die last legacy of Byzantium to Russia was more spiritual
than political. After
1370,
die religious and monastic revival in
Byzantium and die weakening of Mongol power provided a new
orientation to the policies of die Orthodox church in Russia: towards
supra-national unity, spiritual and artistic achievements, and political
reconciliation between principalities. That legacy remained alive
in monastic circles of Muscovy, but was hardly reflected in political
realities after
1500.
