MULTICULTURALISM IN
OPOLE
SILESIA,
LITHUANIA, BELARUS AND UKRAINE.
FINDINGS FROM RESEARCH ON ETHNIC BORDERLANDS
Summary
A series of academic meetings initiated at the
Opole
University and
devoted to social and cultural relations between nations bordering Po¬
land in the so-called eastern belt, to a Polish minority residing beyond
the eastern state borders, to multicultural tradition of these territories
and also to the German minority in Upper Silesia surpassed expecta¬
tions of the organisers. The proposed "discourse on multiculturalism
attracted genuine interest not only of the students, but also of the in¬
habitants of
Opole
Silesia, mainly those who arrived in the so-called
regained territories after the Second World War. The fact that it evo¬
ked a strong response in the studying youth, Polish minority activists
in Lithuania and Ukraine, the Belarusian minority in Poland and the
German minority in
Opole
Silesia seems to show explicitly that joint
discussion and joint scientific research have finally become possible.
Political news spread every now and again by mass media of various
provenance, which are found exciting by the neighbouring nations:
Poles, Ukrainians, Lithuanians, Belarusians, Russians, Germans and
national and ethnic minorities living in their territory, has not changed
welcoming atmosphere and a desire to encourage friendly co-opera¬
tion with neighbours in
Opole.
The formula of an international youth
forum proposed by the organisers, i.e. a series of conferences which
are addressed mainly to young people and promote a set of related
phenomena: multiculturalism, ethnic borderland, ethnic identity, etc.
as well as diverse forms of co-operation, has turned into an attractive
academic and cultural offer.
The series of conferences was opened by the session entitled "Polish
275
Cultural
Identity in Lithuania and Silesia"
(28
October
2005),
which
was prepared by the Department of Cultural and Folklore Studies of
the
Opole
University, the Association for Co-operation 'Poland-East'
(Regional Branch in
Opole)
and the
WILIA
Association in
Opole.
A
year later
(27-28
November
2006)
another conference was held, this
time a Polish-Ukrainian one, entitled "Multiculturalism in the Ivano-
Frankivsk
Oblast
and the
Opole
Voivodship" which was co-organised
by the Vasyl Stefanyk PreCarpathian National University, and specifi¬
cally by the Culture and Art Institute1. An international PoHsh-Belaru-
sian meeting titled "Multiculturalism in Belarusia and
Opole
Silesia"
was then organised by the Institute of East-Slavonic Philology of the
Opole
University and the Yanka
Kupala
State University of Grodno
and took place on the 8th to
10*
of November
2007.
Also in
2007 (27-
28
November) another Ukrainian-Polish youth forum was organised
by the Culture and Art Institute of the Vasyl Stefanyk PreCarpathian
National University, the Department of Cultural and Folklore Studies
of the
Opole
University and the Association for Co-operation 'Poland
-East' (Regional Branch in
Opole),
and this time it was held at the
PreCarpathian National University in Ivano-Frankivsk. Seven persons
from
Opole
presented academic research papers. The Ukrainian party
has already published the
2007
conference materials2.
I wish to underline here that the above-mentioned Association for
Co-operation
'Poland-Easť
(Regional Branch in
Opole)
was a co-or¬
ganiser of all the meetings (both in
Opole
and Ivano-Frankivsk). The
conferences were held under the honourable auspices of the Marshal
1
It should be underlined here that the co-operation between the Department
of Cultural and Folklore Studies of the
Opole
University and the Culture
and Art Institute of the Vasyl Stefanyk PreCarpathian National University in
Ivano-Frankivsk (Ukraine) has been steadily growing since
2004.

tor of the
Opole
University.
Next conferences were attended by university academics and stu¬
dents from
Opoíe,
Ivano-Frankivsk and Grodno, members of parlia¬
ment from Lithuania and Poland, representatives of Polish admini¬
strative units and associations from the region of Vilnius and Trakai,
activists from Polish organisations in Ukraine (Federation of Polish
Organisations in Ukraine and
Franciszek Karpiński
Polish Culture
Society in Ivano-Frankivsk), presidents and chairmen of the Polish
associations from
Opole
(Association for Co-operation
'Poland-Easť
(Regional Branch in
Opole), WILLA
Association in
Opole),
activists
from the Belarusian Social and Cultural Society in
Białystok,
repre¬
sentatives of the youth active in the German minority in
Opole
Sile¬
sia as well as state officials, publicists (e.g. from the Polish quarterly
"Znad Wilii"
published in Lithuania), teachers and pupils from primary
and junior high schools who stay in contact with the Ukrainian party.
The speakers who explored broad aspects of multicultural heritage in
their papers directed attention to many interesting cultural phenomena
which existed on both sides of the border, underlining many a time
the complexity of research into cultural identity of social groups who
live in ethnic borderlands. Both the speakers and the audience, which
spontaneously took part in the discussion, did not evade difficult and
sensitive topics commonly known as historical occurrences, proving
simultaneously that it is possible to talk about various facts. In the
light of their judgements, many historical and cultural facts seem to
have a significant value in ethnic borderlands. Durability and change¬
ability of the formal attributes of culture, such as language, traditional
folklore, customs and rites, material culture and other cultural aspects,
for example ideology, have become an interesting subject of research
work carried out in numerous humanistic disciplines. We may assume
that research undertaken in borderline areas enables us to make a clo¬
ser scrutiny and analysis of all those cultural contexts and phenomena
which either have already disappeared in the heart of the country, or
exist only on the periphery of other cultural categories (which are very
277
often more contemporary and frequently have already become typical
of the mass culture). Thus multiculturalism is a rewarding subject for
academic research, as it results not only from contamination, intermin¬
gling and cross-cutting of various cultural phenomena, but also from
their stability and conservatism. A comparative analysis of cultural
changes is possible thanks to, on the one hand, distinction and pecu¬
liar national and ethnic autonomy of specific cultural facts and, on the
other hand, examples of symbiosis of genetically diversified elements
of culture. The existence of specific communities in the ethnic and
cultural borderland shows
—
as if in a lens
—
entire complexity of the
issue. Therefore, conference materials include also academic research
papers focusing on the situation of national and ethnic minorities and
on the possible ways of co-operation.
This publication presents only selected papers given at the above-
mentioned international conferences, and although they are themati-
cally and methodologically diversified, they are united by common
issues. The problems identified in the publication are among the most
significant "topics" of our times. There are many reasons why "disco¬
urse on multiculturalism" should be given the utmost importance. It
is a platform for the exchange of views between researchers, activists
and students, but the academic research papers and their accompa¬
nying cultural offer (artistic and tourist programmes) should also be
highlighted. I think here about scientific, social, legal, educational,
cultural and even political benefits. In this context I would like to say
a few words about lectures, also about those which have not been inc¬
luded in this publication. Two papers by Adam
Wierciński
on the Ga-
lician republic of shadows in Polish literature and the eastern cultural
borderline deserve a separate mention because
—
as the author pointed
out
—
this is "difficult and troublesome heritage for the contemporary
society as it cannot be divided among the heirs and it should be co-
inherited on equal footing. And it cannot be shared equally." Taking
the region of Grodno in Belarus as an example in his analysis of multi¬
culturalism of this land,
Mikołaj Biaspamiatnych
presents a classifica¬
tion of the local borderline community (rational, ethnic, ethnographic)
and a typology of interethnic co-operation (assimilative, cultural and
278
pluralistic,
integrative).
Dorota Simonides
in her paper on "Silesian
Multiculturalism -the European Model" advances a thesis that Silesia
should be regarded as an exemplary model of the cultural borderline
region. She maintains that the Silesians have tamed the landscape of
their own "small motherland" since the dawn of time, simultaneously
entering the circle of neighbouring culture; and what is now called a
bridge was a bleeding border in the past. Teresa
Smolińska
focuses on
four basic aspects: post-war settlement in Silesia, taming the Silesian
landscape, images of "one of us" and "strangers" created after
1945
and the process of cultural integration after the Second World War in
the area concerned.
Bogusław Wyderka
describes a contemporary lin¬
guistic situation in Silesia (a standardised language of the inhabitants
of Lower Silesia, linguistic diversification in Upper Silesia, peculiarity
of
Cieszyn
Silesia) and linguistic changes in this region over the span
of centuries and after the Second World War in particular (e.g. Silesian
local dialect). The papers on the multiculturalism of modern Ukraine
delivered by Anatolij Hrycan, on the multiculturalism in
Opole
Silesia
presented by
Danuta Berlińska,
on
Podole
(Western Ukraine) which is
a meeting point of the two cultures, Polish and Ukrainian, prepared by
Stanisław
S.
Nicieja (film show included) and on the image of Europe
of universal values in the works of
Stanisław
Vincenz put forward by
Janusz Wójcik
sparked much interest. The first part of the academic
research papers on the multicultural landscape is closed by the text
presented by
Świetlana Kurowska,
an active teacher, who writes about
conditions for educating children in the ethnically diversified environ¬
ment "in the
spirit"
of toleration.
The historic, cultural, linguistic, literary and even pedagogical re¬
flection was complemented with papers of informative and fact-fin¬
ding nature which were frequently journalistic or political commen¬
tary texts (see Part II "About the Situation of Minorities, Forms of
Co-operation and Repatriate
Settlement"),
e.g.
Piotr Kozioł

a paper on the activity of the German minority in the region of

diversified forms of co-operation with the Vilnius region promoted by
the Association and the prospects of its development. Moreover,
Wal¬
demar
Tomaszewski underlines the importance of social and political
organisations for the consolidation of the Polish minority in Lithuania
(Association of Poles in Lithuania, School Motherland Society, Asso¬
ciation of Catholics).
Janina Lipniewicz
draws our attention not only
to the current situation of the Polish educational system in Lithuania
at all levels of education,, but also to diversified forms of co-operation
of local teachers and pupils with organisations established in Poland.
Culture, sport and tourism in the Vilnius region were discussed by
Edmund
Szot
who directed special attention to the development of
various social initiatives in recent years.
Romuald
Mieczkowski deli¬
vered a paper in which he critically assessed forms of co-operation of
the Poles from Lithuania with their motherland and gave reasons for
the negative perception of Polish newspapers in this regard. Also Jan
Syczewski presented a critical analysis of the development of Belaru-
sian culture in Poland.
The headpersons and teachers who have already co-operated for
years:
Kornelia
Lach
from Krzanowice and
Mirosława Gieniega
from
Rohatyn, Grzegorz Pielak
and
Irena Niewęgłowska
from

who co-operate with Tismienica as well as pupils from
the Primary School No.
5
in
Opole: Tomasz Siemek
and
Aleksandra
Chechłowska
spoke of the practical aspects of the widely understood
co-operation between the Poles and the Ukrainians, including how to
manage diversified forms of co-operation, develop Polish-Ukrainian
relations, spread knowledge on both nations, challenge popular ste¬
reotypes, etc.
This part of research work is recapitulated with a paper by
Bożena
Kalecińska
on legal and administrative regulations in Poland that con¬
temporary Polish settlers from the East have to face and respect.
It seems that the students who participate in youth forums are wil¬
ling to discuss the complicated neighbourly relations from an entirely
280
different perspective than their grandparents and parents. The voices
of the older generation that highlight the tragic history of the eastern
borderland or present a sentimental picture, full of stereotypes, of the
pre-war social, political and customary world, were taken by them
not in the wake of individual emotions but in the light of research
work that needs tools to analyse certain
socio-cultural
phenomena. It
is worth emphasizing that students prepared their papers with great
passion. Their research aspirations in their first steps in the field of
science were dominated by theoretical threads around multicultura-
lism, legal environment in which national minorities exist, historical
circumstances of the PreCarpathian culture. At the same time the stu¬
dents did not show a willingness to exploit the intergenerational fami¬
ly transmission of social and customary life, including the traumatic
experience of their ancestors in the eastern borderland in the forties
of the
Jast
century (with the exception of one paper by
Inna
Strzoda
on Ukrainian-Silesian family relations). The papers by
Michał Nie-
bylski,
Michał Tkaczuk
and
Róża Duda
are good cases in point here,
followed by the two topics on multiculturalism in the Ivano-Frankivsk
oblast
and the PreCarpathian culture that were investigated by
Miro¬
sława
Ostaszczuk, who studied at the Ivano-Frankivsk University at
that time. Students took avid interest in the lectures on the cultural
heritage of the Ukrainians and Belarusians, functioning of the Polish
minority in Lithuania and the German minority in Upper Silesia, Po¬
lish heritage lost in the eastern borderland, as well as on legal and
administrative regulations around the contemporary settlement of the
Poles from the East.
All the conferences were accompanied by special artistic and to¬
urist programmes with cognitive value and of economic nature. The
guests made a sightseeing tour of
Opole
and selected places in our
voivodship. For example, the "Silesia" Folk Group from Lubniany
and the
"Karlík"
Group from
Opole
staged short concerts that accom¬
panied the "Lithuanian" conference. Our compatriots from Lithuania
met business representatives during the "Polish-Lithuanian Evening"
and exchanged letters of intent a day later: the compatriots from the
Vilnius region exchanged a letter with
Andrzej Spór,
Governor of the
281
Namysłów
Ρ
oviate
and the compatriots from the Trakai region with
Tadeusz
Monkiewicz, Mayor of
Lewin
Brzeski.
Students also collec¬
ted books in relation with the visit of our compatriots from Lithuania.
I would like to take the opportunity and thank most sincerely all the
donors who responded so generously to our initiative:
Mieczysław
Madziewicz transported
11
boxes of a considerable size with books
to Lithuania. The "Ukrainian" conference was accompanied with folk
song concerts staged by the "Rosynka" Group from the Institute of
Culture and Arts and the "Horianka" Youth Group from a high school
in Nadwirna that maintains close relationship with the pupils in Ju¬
nior High School No.
1
in
Prudnik.
A painting exhibition ("The Hucul
Land") of Igor
Tokáruk
was also launched at that time at the
Opole
University.
Tokáruk
is also the Chairman of the National Association
of Ukrainian Artists. One could also visit the exhibition of Alexander
Kowalenko's paintings. Kowalenko comes from Kolomyya and re¬
sides currently in our voivodship. Our Ukrainian guests participated
in a formal event that celebrated the close of the contest "You Think
You Know Silesia"
(Ze Śląskiem
па
Ту)
in
Łubniany.
They also got
familiar with the scope of activities of the House for Polish-German
Co-operation. The conference in Ivano-Frankivsk was accompanied
with classical and folk music concerts and performances of groups
functioning within the Institute of Culture and Arts. Polish students
visited Ivano-Frankivsk and other cities (e.g. Kolomyya) as well as
Lviv on their way back, including the
Łyczakowski
and the "Eaglets"
{Orląt)
Cemeteries.
