examination of the intersection between the
ancient world and comics. It contributes both to
discussions of the role of comics as a literary
medium in their appropriation of motifs from
Greece and Rome, and to an understanding of
the reception of the ancient world in a popular
and widespread medium. The contributors to this
volume, reading a broad array of comics from
North America, Britain, Europe, and Japan,
bring new perspectives that enhance our under¬
standing of antiquity. Some apply literary and ar¬
tistic criticisms developed by comics theorists and
practitioners to produce new readings of ancient
sources. Others examine the portrayal of the
ancient world in comics, analyzing the changes
and developments required by the format of the
comics medium. Others still assess the develop¬
ment of Greek and Roman myth and history as
they are transferred to new cultural contexts. Eric
Shanower, writer and artist of Age of Bronze,
considers the issue from within the comics indus¬
try: How does one produce a comic on the an¬
cient world? Classics and Comics is accessible to
all those interested in the comics medium or the
reception of the ancient world. Readers of comics
will find new and meaningful readings of well-
known titles such as Asterix, The Sandman,
