Resume
The work is concerning John III of Rosenberg, the significant figure of the
Hospitallers, the Order that had operated in the first half of the
іб 11
century. He
was a representative of significant Czech clan. The clan had been influencing
Czech political affairs and the nobility s status in the country over
600
years. The
oldest family member of the
Vitkovci (Witikonids), Vítek
(Witiko) of
Prčice,
was
present at Royal Court and his descendants had performed diplomatic duties
ordered by Czech kings many times. They had reached due to their merits some
of the privileges provided by rulers and those had assured them the position on
the top of Czech nobility ladder until the complete end of the clan.
The Witikonids had also been gaining owing to their marriage strategy es¬
tates in Austria frontier areas and that helped them to become independent
from Czech governors. Exactly this fact contributed to reach an exceptional
status among Czech noble community. They had also found themselves in the
situation fighting for the peers emancipation even against kings many times.
The Witikonids were successful in skillful using the situation when the Czech
country had not been controlled by any strong royal power as for instance in
the times of
Jan Lucembursky
(John the Blind) and through getting loans they
acquired major part of the pawned royal estates. After the ambitious Charles
came to the power, they naturally got into disputes with the royal authority.
Jindřich
(Henry) of Rosenberg did not hesitate to participate in the uprising
against Wenceslaus IV the King, and to imprison him in his own estate. The
following generation coming after
Oldřich
II of Rosenberg had not been so ea¬
ger to distinct itself against the ruler.
The first half of thei6tb century represents one of the important milestones
in Czech history: the period of
Jagiellon
dynasty s reign ends and there begins
a long-term period of reigning by
Habsburg
clan that influenced Czech history
largely. It was time when foreign clans acquired Czech throne, and non-author-
218
itative
Jagiellon
dynasty s peaceful time is turned to Ferdinand I of Hapsburg s
authoritative governance.
Moreover, exactly at this time, Peter IV of Rosenberg s favorite nephew John III
of Rosenberg was appointed the grand master of Hospitallers. He became his
uncle s favorite for his non-authoritative nature perhaps. Unfortunately, Peter
had not chosen useful successor of the family estates because John as the Church
representative had nobody to transfer the estates on because he was not allowed
to have a successor. It became the source of disputes between Peter and the rest
of nephews, especially between self-confident
Jindřich
(Henry). John as the old¬
est representative of the family and hence the successor of the regent title of
Rosenberg House (he was the ruler in
1523
and later between 1526-1532), thanks
to his uncle s decision became victimized by the dispute and also a target of phys¬
ical attack led against his person by Henry, who invited him to
Krumlov
and tried
to smother him with a pillow. This aggressive act of his brother as well as
Ludvik
Jagellonsky s (Louis
Jagiełło
s)
intervention in favor of Henry brought John to
resigning from the post of the regent. Peter s decision to abdicate his nephew
de
facto endangered possession of estates that were accumulated through cen¬
turies and that endangered even the Rosenbergs existence itself. John III real¬
ized the same perhaps. By his uncle s death, he lost the powerful supporter. That
was the reason why he reconciled with his brothers, stopped participating in the
management of family s estates, and got involved in the Order s duties. Slightly
different situation occurred after Henry died in
1526,
when John came to power
again. That time John had spent less time accomplishing the Order s duties and
had participated in the electoral process of the new Czech king Ferdinand I. The
Master Prague
Burgrave
Zdenek
Lev of Rozmital requested again the estates that
were left to him by Peter IV of Rosenberg. That put an end to a long time friend¬
ship between him and John. John even used the situation when discovered a se¬
cret letter for
Zdenek
Lev, containing news about supporting anti-Hapsburg
French party. He was pleased to pass the letter on Ferdinand I and thus he pre¬
sented his relationship to his former friend. Ferdinand I made the decision on
Rosenberg s succession in favor of both parties it the end: The Rosenbergs shall
instead of transferring family assets, pay these in money and originally inherited
assets shall stay with successors designated in Peter s last will. Financial settle¬
ment occurred at the end of John life, I.e. in
1530.
John III died in
1532
still keep¬
ing the post of the grand master and regent of Rosenberg s house.
John, in the time of his inability performing the duties of the grand mas¬
ter owing to his regent s work, let substitute himself by the doctor of decrees.
The mentions about this person are recorded in contemporary documents from
219
1497
as a
licentiate
of canon law and a preceptor of Saint John commendam in
Kärtnerstrasse in
Vienna and in Unterlaa. This man, at the time John came to
the power as the grand master, gained some financial relief for Czech priory by
negotiating with the grand master at Rhodes that was very helpful after trou¬
bles with paying responsiones during John of Schwamberg s priory. Jan must
have chosen this man as his representative for some reason.
Filip
Flachperger
was representing John of Schwamberg during negotiations at Rhodes already,
and he was the man who was closely related to Maximilian
I s
imperial court,
where he was appointed the imperial court parson.
John as a Catholic was rather tolerant in his opinions concerning reform
trends in the Church. There are not preserved any records about his interven¬
tion coming in favor of returning captured commendam in Kadan to the Order.
He even defended local Lutherans when the Catholics exhumed remains of
Lutherans. As late as at the governor s request, he ordered Prague command¬
er
Mikulás
to ban monk s heretical preachments in Kadan.
Kadan town was the only place where the Order lost its estates during John s
priory, due to the Reformation. The Reformation had spread largely after his
death, I.e. in the second half of the
іб 11
century and deeply affected estates of
the Order in Silesia. It meant to Silesia strong change in the Church orientation
because in
Poděbrady
period, this place was strongly Catholic oriented area
and then, under the Silesian Dukes reign, changed. Former catholic
Vratislav
(Wrocław)
town became critical on its bishop, and followed Luther s ideas.
John displayed similar benevolent attitude also when approaching mem¬
bers of the Unity of the Brethren. We can see this when following case of Jiri
Volynsky who was an eager supporter of the Unity. John did not want to pun¬
ish him by burning him as the Prague consistory recommended but he was
looking for different solution.
Mikulás,
was benevolent in similar way also the
Prior of Strakoniee, who provided Jiri even a treatment after fell seriously ill
in the jail. This human approach to a dissenter helped Jiri to make up his
mind to abandon the Unity and return to Catholicism. Unfortunately, we do
not keep any records commenting his task on catechizing Baptists settled in
Česky Krumlov
area as Ferdinand I ordered him.
It is interesting that the tolerance for other religions was seen in this Catholic
clan more times than just once. However,
Oldřich
II of Rosenberg was known
as the great opponent of the Hussite Reformation, he was for some time im¬
pressed by reformative ideas of
Huss
doctrine and became its supporter, prob¬
ably thanks to his tutor Cenek of Vartenmberg s influence. But later, when
he saw the opposite side of this new Church trend which was destroying his
family estates, he turned his military skills against Calixtines. He had stayed
220
a member of this anti-Hussite party until the end of his life. During George of
Poděbrady
reign he got into a fight with his son John II because he could not
understand his reluctance to oppose George.
Not even his second son Jost, the bishop in Wroclaw and the grand mas¬
ter of Czech province of the Hospitallers, had proved himself as a strong op¬
ponent of George of
Poděbrady
through his life as
d
his father
Oldřich
II had.
Jost, as well as his brother John, tried to reach some balance between the Czech
ruler s favor and critics coming from curia s side and deeply catholic Wroclaw,
where he was based as the Wroclaw s bishop.
John s ancestors kept very good relationships with the Church authorities
and used them for their relatives careers in the Church. They received the rul¬
er s and the Church s permission to found the monastery in
Vyssi Brod,
which
was a very exceptional act, performed in the South Bohemia region so far, us¬
ing their Austrian relative clan of the Schauenburgs support. Likewise, the
relationships between them and Passau s bishops helped them to keep for¬
eign feudality for long time
-
Hasłach. Jost
had used the significant position
of his family to climb the Church ladder up and reached a high position as the
Church member of the kingdom in an exceptionally short time. He, as a secu¬
lar person became in several days a sub-deacon and a deacon and even faster
was appointment the prior in Prague chapter house. Further Church title came
soon as well
-
he was appointed the grand master of the Czech Province of the
Hospitallers and equally the bishop in Wroclaw despite the fact he stayed in
Wroclaw sporadically as he was not much favored by Wroclaw s residents. He
preferred Hospitallers
commendarli
and bishops court in
Nysa.
The same what
Nysa
meant to Jost, Wroclaw s bishop, which was background
for his political activities,
Strakonice,
as the temporary house of Hospitallers
meant to John a base for his management activities in the Order. He paid more
attention to this town than to other Order s commendams. That was the rea¬
son for his labeling used by historians as John of
Strakonice
and he was ad¬
dressing himself as sitting on
Strakonice .
The great number of documents,
he edited for the Order, was created exactly in this town.
John had kept the tradition of the fishery farming in the South Bohemia
region to same extent as his uncle Peter IV had, and as John of Schwamberg,
his predecessor at the position of the grand master. Documents do not say too
much about how much John used the ponds to direct fish farming. We can sug¬
gest John to be active in this business as it was usual type of farming in this
era and especially at Rosenbergs estates.
The economical situation of the Order in Bohemia was exactly demand¬
ing this
-
the era of governor s donations and patrons presents coming from
221
the significant Czech clans was over and new era requested the grand master
to find other way of obtaining financial means to pay regular fees to Rhodes
Order s treasury, I.e. responsiones.
In addition, exactly not paying responsiones could be critical for the grand
master s future
-
he could have been degraded. John of Schwamberg, John s pre¬
decessor experienced exactly this and even he was reappointed the grand master
soon, he had been in the danger of being degraded again until the end of his life.
Complicated economical situation of the Czech priory that came after Hussite ri¬
ots, resulted in troubles with paying responsiones. Czech priory was condemned
to long-time economical crisis thanks to destruction of several commendams by
Hussite armies as well as by
Sigismund
of Luxembourg s lien policy.
The first one who tried to make some reforms was John s granduncle Jost,
who skillfully used his position of Prague prior and of Wroclaw s bishop. He used
the position of Prague prior for the acquisition of last large estates
-
Volyně
do¬
main in
Strakonice
county, and the position of Wroclaw s bishop used in clever
strategy when dealing with George of
Poděbrady.
George was disfavored by curia
and Jost as the Catholic party representative in Bohemia was the mediator when
dealing with curia on the future of the sub utraque species. Jost meant also to
George a great support in the deeply anti-Utraquist Silesia. Unfortunately, Jost s
effort to conciliate George and curia resulted in disfavoring him in Wroclaw and
in critics coming from the pope. In the end, the pressure evolved by Catholic
anti-Podebrady fraction
-
The
Zelena Hora
Association made him to oppose the
governor. As Jost was important for George foreign policy, this grand master
had succeeded in getting George s permission to buy out pawned estates of the
Order and to gain
Volyně
domain, mentioned already.
John tried to stabilize the financial situation of the Czech Priory after his pre¬
decessor John of Schwamberg s management. He had not disposed of so many
possibilities as Jost had; however, the patronage of Czech king was helping him.
Same effect working in Peter s favor had his uncle s, one of the Rosenbergs, rec¬
ommendation that strongly influenced Czech king, the queen, and the emper¬
or. In addition, exactly Peter and Luis Jagiello s recommendation at the emperor
Maximilian helped John to acquire
Mailberg
castle with the domain.
It is not quite clear, if the acquisition was bound to the Order, specifically
if that was the estate of
Mailbergs commendam
or if the acquisition was solely
of John s private character. It was quite usual in history of Czech Priory that
some members of the Order had kept their own, mostly family s estates.
This phenomenon was in conflict with the Order s regulations, which fol¬
lowed Benedictine holy orders; however, it has been documented in number
222
of grand masters and in the Order s brethren since the 14th century. The re¬
cords are also providing information on John s use of financial help coming
from people serving at the family farmstead and paying the loans back from
selling the Order s estates. We can see similar situation in Jost, who used for
the acquisition of
Volyně
domain a great amount of money coming from the
sources of
Strakonice
s commendam,
which did not probably disposed of such
high amount of money that time. The amount was considerably similar to the
amount that John lent fictitiously to Jost, to avoid requisition by creditors.
In the
Oldřich
Iľs
reign, the Rosenbergs had acquired large estates but they
also got in great debts that were for
Oldřich
and his sons very difficult to over¬
come. In addition, the next generation had to struggle to get out of the debts
and that was why John III of Rosenberg during his reigning tried to find some
way to get rid of the debts. One of them was selling mines that the Rosenbergs
owned in
Nalzovske Hory
and Velhartice area. They were permitted to mint
coins by Luis
Jagiełło
and later by Ferdinand I of Hapsburg, which was only of
partial help. However, no attempts helped the Rosenbergs get rid of the debts
up to their clan died out. The Rosenbergs were not the only noble family living
in debts. It was quite common in Czech noble clans to be highly indebted in the
times before the Battle of White Mountain. It concerned also family Pernstein,
Ryzemberg, and Rozmital families. Last two named clans were even chased by
creditors to that extent that they had to escape to avoid arrest. The Rozmitals
even lost their estates in Bohemia and were made to develop new way of their
existence in Moravia but they failed to get out of debts there.
It has been questioned, what was the source of John s financing Renaissance
reconstruction of
Strakonice
castle that had turned Gothic-Romanesque castle
into a representative seat of the grand master. The tower, called
Jelenka
in these
days, had received generous paintings that have been preserved until today. John
awarded
Strakonice
a privilege in 1512 that allowed the town to sell its beer under
better conditions and let the Order pay for an executor service s costs.
Was John rather the representative of the Order or of his family? Briefly
speaking, he had been rather the Order s representative despite it had not meant
too much to the Order and he will always be compared with Jost, his grand-
uncle, who was the individual with high significance for the Order or history.
When we consider his belonging to one of the most significant Czech clan, it is
obvious that he will always stay hidden in the shadow of his predecessors Vitek
of
Prčice,
Peter I of Rosenberg,
Oldřich
II of Rosenberg, Jost of Rosenberg, and
his followers and equally last of the Rosenbergs
-
William and Peter Vok.
