Trie Lost Library is literary and intellec¬
tual history written with a virtuosity, a felicity
rare in the most urbane and gracious of nov¬
els. The work of a distinguished European
poet, essayist and novelist, it sparkles and
shimmers with wit
;
it dazzles with the sudden
brilliant illumination it casts on familiar fig¬
ures and events; finally, it moves the reader
profoundly in its tragic unfolding of the forces
that have led to the fall and disintegration of
Western culture as we have known it.
The Lost Library of the title is that body
of books which bade fair, up to the fatal year
of
1914,
to stand as the bulwark of a perma¬
nent, ever-growing tradition of enlighten¬
ment and progress. Using a device doomed
to failure in less nimble and sophisticated
hands than his own, Mr. Mehring has built
the tragic history of Western culture upon
a semi-narrative framework, as the refugee
narrator reassembles the books of his father
s
library after receiving them in exile. The sub¬
title, The Autobiography of a Culture, is
not simply a
tour d esprit,
for as book after
book is unpacked and re-examined, it seems
as though the story of the last hundred years
in Europe, as revealed in its literary history,
were retelling itself.
Widely heralded as the twentieth century
Heine, and a master of irony and paradox,
Mr. Mehring makes heady reading for the
serious American used to more pedestrian
historians. A distinguished advance reader
of The host Library remarked, It moves in
so brilliant a flow that one doesn t stop to
relish the extraordinary spots on each page.
One keeps thinking, I ll come back to them
on my next reading. Trie Lost Library is
an intellectual stimulant. It is also a source
of abiding reflection and pleasure.
