This book explores key texts of the black gay culture of the
1980s
and
90s.
Starting with an analysis of the political discourse in anthologies such
as In the Life and Brother to Brother, it identifies the references to the
Harlem Renaissance and the Protest Era as common elements of black
gay discourse. This connection to African American cultural and political
traditions legitimizes black gay identity and criticizes the construction of
gay identity as white. Readings of Isaac Julien's Looking for
Langston,
Samuel R. Delany's "Atlantis: Model
1924"
and The Motion of Light in
Water, Melvin Dixon's Vanishing Rooms, Randall Kenan's A Visitation
of Spirits, and Steven Corbin's No Easy Place to Be demonstrate how
these strategies of signifying are used in affirmative, humorous, and
ironic ways.
"Simon Dickel's Black/Gay is a superb study of black gay writing of the
early
1980s
and
1990s.
Dickel has done two remarkable feats in his
study. First, relying on the important archives at New York's Schomburg
Library, Dickel has called attention to the cadre of black gay writers
decimated by the HIV/AIDS crisis. These writers deserve to be read by
new audiences. Second, Dickel has done an amazing feat of criticism
to show how these writers wrote themselves into existence by creating
a black gay heritage. Dickel shows that the black gay literary movement
of the
1
980s was not a seamless one, but was fraught with debate and
contestation about the meaning of black gay identity. Dickel's insightful
analysis gives us the much needed tools to show a black gay literary
movement that includes the writers Melvin Dixon, James Baldwin,
Samuel Delany, Randall Kenan, Stephen Corbin, Joseph Beam, Essex
Hemphill, Assotto Saint, Isaac
Julien,
and Marlon
Riggs.
Many of the
works by these artists are no longer in print, but they deserve to be as
Dickel's analysis makes a case. Black/Gay is a must read for anyone
interested in the intersection of race, sexuality, gender, and class. I am
exceedingly glad to have read Dickel's study and I am filled with pride
to know that my writings, as well as that of many more scholars of black
gay literature, has helped to bring Black/Gay to the world."
