the first third of XX century
Summary
Cossack wars of the end of
XVI - XVIII
centuries belong
to those historical events which influenced on the development not only
Ukrainian, Russian, Polish nations, but also caused many geopolitical
changes in Europe. It has generated a considerable interest of the foreign
historians to the outlined theme which has both a scientific value and
ideological colouring. Namely political-ideological factors stipulated
considerable differences in interpretation of certain events by different
national historiographies, in particular, Ukrainian, Polish and Russian
ones. In this connection, to understand the history of Ukraine in its historic
development of world-wide significance it is important to co-ordinate the
Ukrainian vision of the historical past with its vision in historiography of
other nations, first of all, Polish.
At the end of
XIX
century
-
the first third of XX century Polish histori¬
cal science was characterized by a number of changes: it noticeably advanced
in methodological and interpretational relations, resorted to the revision of
the problems and theoretical bases of history under the ascendancy of
ne¬
oromantic
ideas etc. The representatives of
positivist
historical schools, such
as Krakow's, Warsaw's and L'viv's continued influencing on Polish historical
opinion and simultaneously new historiographical directions were formed
-
historico-legal, economic, cultural etc, with independent and populist ori¬
entations.
Since the end of
XIX
century under the influence of the Polish nation¬
al movement, Ukrainian revival, Neo-Romanticism, Polish historical sci¬
ence changed its social and political function, reoriented itself to practical
ideological aims. With appearance of prospects of independent Poland, an
Optimistic' vision of the past was spreading in the Polish historical circles
which idealized and glorified the national past, contributed to implant¬
ing in public consciousness historical myths and stereotypes. The policy
of that time imposed an imprint on explanation of Polish and Ukrainian
history by the Polish scientists.
In this work we analyzed the major evaluation judgments which were
formulated by the Polish historians at the end of
XIX -
the first third of
XX century about the Ukrainian Cossacks which more noticeably influ¬
enced on the formation process of contemporaries' historical memory.
The problem of Polish-Cossack relations caused a vivid personal interest
of the Polish scientists of the outlined period. It was connected with the
fact that
XVII
century on the whole and the Ukrainian Cossacks in partic¬
ular were perceived as a critical point and the beginning of decline of the
old Polish state. Their attention was attracted to the problems of Cossacks
genesis and their evolution into the public state, Cossacks revolts of the
end of
XVI -
the beginning of
XVII
century, the Cossack revolution under
B.Khmelnytskyi's leadership and its consequences, Polish-Cossack agree¬
ments. A few factors influenced on the enlightening of the Cossacks his¬
tory in Polish historiography of the outlined period: critical interpretation
of the researchers of
XVI -
the first half of
XIX
century of Cossack wars,
the crisis of Positivism and the distribution of Neo-Romantic methodolo¬
gy, discussions with Russian, Lithuanian, Ukrainian historiographies and
political situation
ofthat
time.
Polish historians of the
Positivist
period achieved considerable suc¬
cess in finding out the role of the Cossacks in the destiny of the multina¬
tional Polish state
-
Yu.Shuyskyi, L.Kubalya, V.Chermak, M.Bobzhynskyi,
A.Levytskyi, A.Yablonovskyi, T.Korzon, B.Smolenskyi and others, as they
were foremost interested in expansion of the Polish borders to the east.
From the beginning of the XXth century such scientists, as O.Gurkha,
V.Konopchynskyi, VSobeskyi, V.Tomkevych,
A.Sheľongovskyi, L.Frons'
et al
usually elucidated the Cossack-Polish relations through the prism of
the method with the help of which Poland received its independence. In
spite of the different political, ideological preferences, influence of
posi¬
tivist
or Neo-Romantic approaches, the Polish researchers mainly repre¬
sented the Cossacks as those who harmed the interests of the old Polish
multinational state, hindered its development in
XVI - XVII
centuries.
Examining Cossack revolts as an internal problem of the Polish multi¬
national state, the Polish researchers were convinced that although these
wars did not become a direct reason of the decline of the Polish state,

however, they provoked decreasing of the international authority, discov¬
ered the internal weaknesses and at the same time hindered a civilized
development of Ukraine and that resulted in the decline of the Cossacks
and in the crash of Ukrainian strivings for independence. The problem of
the causes and effects of Cossack wars, Polish-Cossacks agreements, the
policy of B. Khmelnytskyi
s
successors and the like caused critical discus¬
sions and polemic between the Ukrainian, Polish and Russian historians.
Thus through ideologization and subjectivity of works of some Ukrainian
researchers they differed a little from works of the Polish and Russian
scientists. Only such modern Ukrainian, Russian and Polish researchers,
as N.Yakovenko, V.Shcherbak, V.Smoliy, T.Chukhlib, T.Yakovleva,
Ya.Kachmarchyk, V.Serchyk, T.Khynchevska-Hennel and others try to
get rid of, on the one hand, negative stereotypes in attitude toward the
Cossacks which are traditional for Russian and Polish historiography, and
on the other hand, their idealization which is a characteristic feature of the
Ukrainian historiographical tradition.
