Łyczaków,
The Garden of Rest and Memory presents an amazing, dra¬
matic, and complicated history of Lvov
-
one of the most important cities in
Eastern Europe. Situated at the intersection of many routes, languages, races,
and religions, Lvov has always been bustling with many cultures and nations.
In the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century, Lvov was the capital of
Polish
Galicia,
a region where different nationalities: Polish, Ukrainian, Jewish,
Armenian, and later also German, Austrian and Russian, worked together or
struggled for domination. After the partition of the Polish state, Lvov, together
with Cracow, Warsaw, Vilnius and
Poznań,
became a leading spiritual centre
of the Polish people. Not only did the Polish independence movement flour¬
ish there, but also Polish intellectual elites thrived around different academic
institutions of the city (including the University of Lvov, Lvov s Polytechnic
and Lvov s Agricultural Academy). In the 19th century, the Ukrainian national
independence movement was established in Lvov.
More than thirty per cent of Lvov s population was of Jewish origin. It was one
of the centres of Jewish enlightenment where the orthodox guardians of tradition
and advocates of progress and assimilation competed fiercely with each other. The
Jews living in Lvov created one of the most colourful and opulent communities in
the city. Moreover, Lvov was a key cultural centre of Polish Armenians, boasting the
only Armenian cathedral in that part of Europe. The cultural contribution of Austri-
ans, Germans and Russians to the life of the city was also substantial.
Stanisław Sławomir
Nicieja, a professor of
Opole
University (and its former
rector for three terms), throughout his academic career has won a reputation of
an outstanding historian, biographer, essayist, and expert on Eastern-European
culture. He is a distinguished specialist in the history of European cemeteries and
his history of the
Łyczaków
Cemetery is presented against the background of the
most famous burial grounds in Europe like Ohlsdorf in Hamburg,
Stigliano in
Genoa, Melaten in Cologne,
Verano
in Rome,
Père-Lachaise in
Paris, Highgate
and Kensal Green in London and
Kerepesi
in Budapest.
Łyczaków,
The Garden of Rest and Memory has an original and sophis¬
ticated structure. In parts it is an intellectual essay as well as a literary tale,
crammed with biographical details and personal anecdotes. In the final section,

the book changes into a comprehensive, almost encyclopaedic record, filled with
unknown facts and forgotten biographies. The book combines many types of
writing, from art history and sociology, to political and cultural studies. It is
result of long years of studies conducted in the historical archives of Lvov and
Wroclaw and also in the private archives of many families, which, as a result of
the Yalta Conference, got scattered all around the world from Cracow to Sydney.
The book has its origin in two monographs previously published by
Stanislaw
Sławomir Nicieja: Cmentarz Łyczakowski we Lwowie (The Łyczaków
Cemetery in Lvov, published in
1988,
and
1990)
and
Cmentarz Obrońców
Lwowa
(Cemetery of Lvov s Defenders, published in
1990),
which immediately
after their publication entered the best-seller lists in Poland granting the au¬
thor a merited popularity and a strong position in Polish historiography.
In
Łyczaków,
The Garden of Rest and Memory, Nicieja evokes hundreds of
names of people whose remains are buried in the
Łyczaków
Cemetery. He also dis¬
cuses monuments, inscriptions, epitaphs and describes ceremonial funerals, patri¬
otic rallies and various cemetery rituals. The
Łyczaków
hills harbour the remains of
the people who rose above the threshold of ordinariness in their lives and after death
were buried either in simple graves or in family tombs of little artistic value. They
represented a whole range of professions and stations including, among others, poli¬
ticians, high officials, judges, lawyers, scholars, teachers, architects, doctors, social
activists, philanthropists, artists, actors, poets, priests, merchants, industrialists and
craftsmen who all made their mark in Polish history. It would be simply impossible
to omit their names in the
Łyczaków
Cemetery monograph.
The author introduces not only people worth remembering because of
their exceptional achievements or important contributions to culture, science
or economy but

in the brief recollections and peculiar biographic snapshots
-
presents dramatic cases of death, private fascinations, original life choices, re¬
lationships, bonds, blood ties and friendships. Sometimes, in order to demon¬
strate the complexity of someone s biography, the author recalls an interesting
anecdote. Most importantly, the book is not about sorrow and despair, usually
associated with death and the cemetery, but primarily it is an attempt to record
different manifestations of human creativity as well as the spirit of the time.
