I. INTRODUCTION.
THE ADVANCES IN OFFSHORE TECHNOLOGY WHICH REQUIRE A COMPLETE INTEGRATION
OF ALL TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC DISCIPLINES INVOLVED ARE, IN GENERAL, NOT
BEING MADE USE OF IN AUSTRALIA. THE RESULT HAS BEEN THAT THE TECHNOLOGY
OF RAW MATERIAL PRODUCTION HAS DEVELOPED FAR BEYOND THE TECHNOLOGY OF
THE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM NEEDED TO GET THAT PRODUCTION TO THE CONSUMER,
THEREFORE THE AREA NOW WHERE ECONOMIES CAN BE MADE IS IN THE
TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM, ESPECIALLY IN THE MARINE AREA BY EFFICIENT
MATERIAL HANDLING METHODS AND THE FULL UTILISATION OF LARGE SHIPS.
BECAUSE OF THE RELATIVELY SHALLOW CONTINENTAL SHELF WHICH LIMITS
ADEQUATE DRAUGHT TO A RELATIVELY FEW LOCATIONS
THE USE OF LARGE SHIPS REQUIRES NOT ONLY AN INTEGRATION OF ALL THE
TECHNICAL DISCIPLINES, BUT ALSO A COMPLETE INTEGRATION ON THE ECONOMIC
