In 1989 the text was de¬ fended as a PhD dissertation which is why it bears the marks of a beginner s work just embarking on a research career. Only the manner of citation and the arrange¬ ment of bibliography have been entirely changed while preparing the work for publication. The chapter History of the settlement has been taken out and de¬ tected inaccuracies and errors have been corrected. About 5000 names have been included in the study and they designate 4730 locations and objects in the former district of Ivailovgrad. This material was per¬ sonally collected from June to September 1984 and from May to October 1985, when all villages with living population were visited. Toponyms have been ex¬ cerpted from written sources as well - tax registers and other archive materials, topographic and other specialized maps. Literature about the region has been stud¬ ied. The extremely complex, even dramatic historical fate of the population in this region, the co-existence of different ethnicities, ethnic groups and confessions pre¬ sents serious difficulties to the researcher. Most villages in the region have small numbers of immigrant population and the amount of land belonging to the village is not very large. This is one of the reasons for the comparatively small number of local names. The basic reason, however, are the two breaks in the development of the toponymie systems in the district of Ivailovgrad. The first break comes at the beginning of the Ottoman invasion, the second - in 1912-1913 when almost all of the Turkish-speaking and Greek-speaking local population emigrates. According to their linguistic belonging the studied names are primarily Bulgar¬ ian and have emerged on Bulgarian linguistic territory generally reflecting the char¬ acteristics typical of the South Thracian dialects. Defining the exact location of linguistic phenomena has been made very difficult by the intense migratory pro¬ cesses in the region, which are the cause, even on the territory of the same village, for mixing of traits typical of different dialects. Most Turkish toponyms and those originating on Turkish linguistic territory are names of settlements introduced, through administrative practices in the years of Ottoman domination. Another group of names are either connected to the Christian religion or are formed from Bulgarian proper names or appellatives. A consider¬ able number of toponyms have arisen on Bulgarian territory from Turkish loan 406 words which are widely spread in the dialect. To a lesser degree toponymy reflects Greek influence. It is primarily evident in the distribution of certain loan words and very few names of Greek origin. The reciprocal impact of different languages leads to the emergence of hybrid names. Archaic toponyms in the region are comparatively few. To this group we can refer the hyronyms Орда and Марешница, the name of the old centre of the area, Лютица, which is encountered in written sources from IX -X century. The fol¬ lowing names associated with the Christian religion Свети Илия, Свети Гьорги, Клисе дюзю, Папазлан and others, as well as names originating from words that no longer exist in the dialect, can be considered archaic. The main ways of formation of toponyms on Bulgarian linguistic territory are reflected in the structure of local names in the region of lvailovgrad. The relative share of names formed from an adjective + noun, and that of possessive names as well, is large which is probably due to the fact that a large part of local names have been formed recently(at a more modern stage. The toponymy of the region of lvailovgrad gives the opportunity to follow the development of material and spiritual culture in the region, of specific business practices, specific features of the flora, the fauna and the relief. Particularly valu¬ able are the names which contribute to tracing the historic development of the region. Numerous remains of buildings, as well as toponyms in the structure of which are included words such as селище, виран, йорен, are further evidence of the tragic fate of the local population. Despite their specific featutes local names in the region of lvailovgrad do not essentially differ from the toponymy of some neighbouring regions - that of Madan, Parvomai and Topolovgrad. Similarities in phonetics, grammar and lexis, in the structure of toponyms, supported by the given parallels from various regions in the country and abroad, make the toponymy of the region of lvailovgrad an indelible part of the entire Bulgarian linguistic territory. The work treats a number of issues which can be a subject of debate. The point for publishing the work is that the collected material should complete the toponymie map of the Bulgarian linguistic territory and be used as basis for further research. It can also be a stimulus for the continuation and extension of research in the region. 407
