Local names in the region of Pleven is the first thorough
toponymie
research
in the former district of Pleven. The collected and scientifically analysed
4348
names of
55
settlements convey a wealth of historical, archeological and linguistic
information. The work contains geographic and historic references for each of the
settlements, linguistic description and analysis of the toponyms and a complete
Dictionary of names of settlements, rivers and locations in the region. The linguistic
analysis presents the phonetic, morphologic and derivational characteristics of the
toponyms, classification of names according to their origin and their semantics
which allows for the detection of archaic names and for the observation of their
transformations in the course of time. Their phonetic aspect is clear evidence of the
mixing of different features of eastern (Balkan) and western (northwestern) dialects
owing to the geographic location of the former district of Pleven. It also testifies to
the migration processes in the direction from the Balkan mountain (from the regions
of Gabrovo, Sevlievo and Teteven) and in the opposite direction as well. Analysis
of derivation reveals patterns and means typical of the Bulgarian language lexis.
Considering their origin there follows the conclusion that local names of domestic
origin prevail and those of Turkish or Arabic Turkish origin take the first place
among the ones of foreign origin.
The basic part of the work belongs to the Dictionary of toponyms in the region
of Pleven which contains complete data of the spatial, physical and geographic
characteristics of the objects and etymological notes.
The monograph offers rich information on the history of the Bulgarian
language (including the Bulgarian dialects), about the people of different ethnic
origin inhabiting the region (Thracians, Slavs, Turks, Gypsies and Circassian),
about the nature of the contacts among them, as well as on the social and industrial
development
ofthat
particular region.
