NAMES IN THE REGION OF NIKOPOL
(Summary)
Information from the Archive of the Centre of Bulgarian onomastics at
Veliko Turnovo
University has been extensively used in this work. With the aim
of the research in view, the collected
toponymie
material has been verified in every
settlement. During the field trip that we undertook in
2008
we filled in many gaps
and shed light on most of the unclear names. In August
2010
we made one last round
of the region of research comparing the lists of local names of every settlement to
the information in the registers of land ownership kept in the municipal offices.
The population of the region under research is represented primarily by four
ethnic groups: Bulgarians (in the majority), Turks (mainly in Nikopol), Wallachians
(Romanians, mostly Bulgarians considering themselves Wallachians) and gypsies.
There are but a few whiteguards who define themselves as Russians and whose
present day descendants consider themselves Bulgarians. There is also a small group
of Tartars in the village of Debovo.
According to the statistics of
1893
cited by

(1974: 331)
the
population of the district of Nikopol was about
41908
people, from whom
27060
Bulgarians,
7152
Romanians and
5773
Turks. There is no mention of other ethnic
groups. By
2009
the population of the same district had drastically diminished
to
26775
inhabitants (according to their present address) without mentioning the
specific number of people belonging to different ethnic groups.
In the former district of Nikopol there have been changes in the structure of
settlements and some of the names of settlements have also undergone changes. Thus,
for example, in the Anniversary Collection of articles The Bulgarian Village (C,

The settlements in the district have been studied according to the administrative
division of Bulgaria which had been in effect till 196O.The administrative unit
of which Nikopol was the centre comprised the following settlements: Asenovo,
Batsova

Brest, Vubel, Gigen, Gigenska

(Iskar),
Gulyantsi,
Dolni
Vit,
Dragash
voivoda,
Dubovan, Evlogievo, Zhernov, Zagrazhden, Izgrev,
Kreta,
Lenkovo, Lozitsa, Lyubenovo, Mechka, Milkovitsa, Muselievo, Mukreshan
(abandoned), Nikopol, Novachene, Osum (abandoned),
Novo selo,
Sanadìnovo,
Somovit, Trunchovitsa, Cherkovitsa and Shiakovo

According to the administrative division of the country at present all of these
settlements are part of the region of Pleven within which they are divided into four
municipalities: the municipality of Nikopol, of Gulyantsi, of Pleven and of Levski.

The following villages are part of the municipality of Nikopol: Asenovo,
Batsova
mahala, Vubel,
Debovo, Dragash
voivoda, Evlogievo,
Zhernov, Lozitsa,
Lyubenovo, Muselievo, Novachene, Sanadinovo and Cherkovitsa; part of Gulyantsi
municipality are Brest, Gigen, Gigenska mahala(Iskar)

Dolni
Vit, Duhovan,
Zagrazhden,
Kreta,
Lenkovo, Milkovitsa,
Somovit
and Shiakovo; part of Pleven
municipality is the village of Mechka and the villages of Izgrev and Trunchovitsa
fall into the municipality of Levski.
The region is connected to important events in Bulgarian history: Nikopol
was the last capital of the Turnovo kingdom. It was the site of the historic battle
of Nikopol. Early
Islamisation
of Bulgarians was registered in the valley of the
Osum river. The presence of Bulgarian catholics was also observed there and the
mass arrival of people from the Balkan mountain and Bulgarians from the area
of
Banat
was also recorded. Tartars, Circassians, refugees from the Western parts,
from Macedonia and the Aegean region of Thrace settled there. These events along
with the various happenings in social life left significant traces in the language and
respectively in the
toponymie
nomenclature of the region.
In the Toponymicon (the dictionary of toponyms) the names are given on the
left side in alphabetical order in representative form following the official norms
of spelling. Next in square brackets comes the transcribed version of the toponym
according to the manner of its pronunciation in the particular settlement.
Dialectal forms are given parallelly as major title entries in which there are
essential discrepancies in the alphabetical order.
The total number of the units included in the Toponymicon (basic and
versions) exceeds
3000.
The second part of toponyms of two components is presented and analysed
separately. This does not apply to isaphet constructions of Turkish origin or to
constructions of Romanian linguistic origin.
Stress is not marked only on onyms excerpted from books.
Onomastic
analysis goes to the first etymon. More profound etymology is
seldom used.

В тази работа широко се използва информация от Архива на Центъра
по българска
ономастика
при Великотърновския университет. За целта е про¬
верена достоверността на събрания топонимичен материал във всяко селище.
В експедицията, която проведохме през
2008
г. заедно
с проф. Т.
Балкански,
допълнихме много празноти, осветлихме повечето от неясните имена. През
август
2010
г. извърших една последна обиколка на изследвания район, като
съпоставих списъците на местните имена за всяко селище
с
данните от Регис¬
трите на поземлените имоти, съхранявани в общините.
Населението на описвания регион е представено главно от четири ет¬
нически групи: българи (мнозинството), турци (предимно в Никопол), власи
(румъни, повечето от тях повлашени българи), цигани. Има и малко самооп¬
ределящи се като руснаци белогвардейци, чиито днешни потомци са изцяло
българизирани, както и неголяма група
татари
в с. Дебово.
Според статистиката от
1893
г.,
цитирана от К. Иречек
(1974: 331)
на¬
селението на Никополска околия е
41908
души, от тях
27060
българи,

румънци,

турци. Други етнически групи не се споменават. През
2009
г.
населението на същия регион, без разбивка по етнически групи, е силно нама¬

Бившата Никополска околия е меняла селищния си състав, променяни
са и имената на някои от селищата. Така

Регионът е свързан
с
важни събития от българската история: Никопол е
последната столица на Търновското царство. Тук се провежда историческата
Никополска битка. В поречието на Осъм е регистрирана ранна ислямизация на
българи, както и присъствие на българи павликяни, прииждане на балканджии
и банатски българи. Заселвани са и
татари,
черкези, както и бежанари от За¬
падните покрайнини, Македония и Беломорска Тракия. Всички тези събития,
както и различни прояви в обществения живот, са оставили значителни следи
в езика, съответно в топонимната номенклатура на региона.
В Топонимикона (речника на топонимите) имената са подредени по аз¬
бучен ред от лявата страна в представителна форма, съобразена
с
книжовната
правописна норма. На второ място в квадратни скоби е представена в транс¬
крибиран вид формата
на топонима
според изговора в съответното населено
място.
Като заглавни са поместени и успоредни, главно диалектни форми, при
които има съществени разминавания в азбучния ред.
Общият брой на включените в Тононимикона единици (оновни и вари¬
антни) е над
3000.
При двукомпонентни топоними втората част е представена и тълкувана
отделно. Това не се отнася за турските изафети, както и за румънскоезичните
конструкции.
Ударение не е поставено само при оними, ексцерпирани от книжни из¬
точници.
Ономастичният анализ стига до първи
етимон.
Рядко се използва по-
дълбока етимология.
