Summary
The history of the National Armed Forces
(Narodowe Siły Zbrojne
-
NSZ) in the
Lublin region has been given scant attention by researchers so far. After World War II,
the Lublin region was perceived as a special, almost symbolic part of the country. It was
there that the first structures of the communist administration were formed, something that
led to the coinage The Poland of Lublin . The fight against the armed underground
resistance, in particular its national faction was, in this context, a serious challenge for
Soviet and Polish communists. The Lublin region, compared to the rest of the country,
was the most threatened by the so-called reactionaries . As a result, the armed
resistance there took on a particularly determined character.
The National Armed Forces in the Lublin region were formed in late November/early
December
1942.
They were organised as NSZ District III
(XVI),
which covered a major
part of the territory of the pre-war Lublin province. In the years
1944/1945-1947,
the
province was composed of the following
powiaty
(administrative districts): Lublin,
Chełm,
Puławy, Biłgoraj, Zamość, Krasnystaw, Janów Lubelski/Kraśnik, Lubartów, Tomaszów
Lubelski and Hrubieszów (Włodawa and Sandomierz
-
according to the
Lublin
Province
Public
Security
Office).
Seven
NSZ Powiat
Commands
(Komendy Powiatowe
- KP)
were
established in these districts:

Krasnystaw,

Janów
Lubelski,
KP
Kraśnik,
KP
Zamość,
KP
Chełm and
KP
Biłgoraj.
Within these Commands,

were created. The northern
powiaty
-
Radzyń Podlaski, Łuków, Siedlce and Biała Podlaska
-
were, on the other
hand, subordinated to District
XII [XVII]
Siedlce,
sometimes referred to as the
Podlasie
District. It also encompassed parts of the
powiat
of Warsaw.
The period analyzed in this book starts with the establishment of the
PKWN
(Polish
Committee for National Liberation). This involved the technical and qualitative
restructuring of the NSZ in the Lublin region, resulting from the need to modify their
actions under the new Soviet occupation. The year
1947,
which basically closes the time
frame of this publication, is concerned primarily with the disappearance of NSZ activity
in this area due to their earlier neutralisation or dispersal. This is marked in particular by
the Amnesty Act, promulgated in March
1947,
following which NSZ soldiers (and
soldiers from other armed resistance organisations) gave up their arms and declared
themselves to the authorities. Due to the dispersal of NSZ, this organisation was, with a
few exceptions, inactive during the popular referendum and elections.

Summary
This book has been divided into two parts: a detailed study and a list of NSZ soldiers
and commanders. The first part falls into four chapters, each divided into sub-chapters.
The second part is a name-by-name list of the commanders and soldiers of the National
Armed Forces of District III Lublin. It is the first such list in Polish historical literature.
It is based on thousands of
Kwestionariusze osobowe
(personal files) of the former
secret police, constituting
a multi-
volume attachment to Description no.
117.
These were
created based on unique operational files of the security authorities, and other archival
records as well as memoirs and publications. This enabled the preparation of
130
profiles
both of the key commanders and ordinary NSZ soldiers, active in the area after
1944.
The
author has also used various accounts and memoirs. The collected has been collated with
the existing source publications.
The monograph is based primarily on previously unknown and unused former secret
police files from the Archives of the Institute for National Remembrance in Lublin
(AIPN-Lu). Particularly helpful were the Descriptions of Department

of the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs, mainly Description no.

parts I-II, concerned with NSZ District
Lublin, as well as numerous dossiers on individual agents, institutions, operational files,
police and court records. The author has used the resources of the Archive of the Institute
for National Remembrance in Warsaw (AIPN W-wa),

Maps and tables have also been
included. Finally, the book contains a glossary of abbreviations, a bibliography, a number
of annexes and an index of persons and geographical names.
The book is the first successful attempt at establishing the structure and staffing of
NSZ in
1944-1947
and at reconstracting their activities and the approximate number of
soldiers. According to the available findings and accounts, roughly
6,000
NSZ soldiers
fought in the Lublin region during World War II. Based on the incomplete data of the
Lublin security authorities, it was possible to establish the numbers and specific surnames
of the
1,200-1,300
NSZ soldiers active in
1944-1947,
particularly in the Districts of
Lublin,
Kraśnik, Puławy, Janów Lubelski, Łęczna
and part of
Chełm.
Several hundred
persons should probably be added to this approximate number given the large number of
NSZ soldiers surnames that appear in various cases concerning individual institutions and
in loose records, but are not listed in the registers presented in the book. The Security
Office functionaries had a more or less complete knowledge of the

thousand or so NSZ
soldiers in the area. The security police kept special personal files
(Kwestionariusze
osobowe)
for about
130
of them. At the political level, the National Armed Forces
adopted the concept of the two enemies from the very beginning. After the defeat of
Nazi Germany, they turned against the Soviet occupation, something that had the active
support of the Security Office (UB) and Civic Militia (MO). The diversionary actions of
NSZ described in this book suggest that their main objective was to destroy MO and UB
posts and liquidate overzealous security functionaries in the area, and thus to reduce the
oppression of the Polish population and demonstrate the power of the national
underground resistance. A number of specific actions were coordinated with the other
armed local formation, mainly with AK (Home Army) and WiN (Freedom and Indepen-

dence). In this respect, it is particularly noting the very well documented description of
the murder (execution) of Ukrainians and UB informers in the village of
Wierzchowiny
by an NSZ unit commanded by

This has remained common knowledge but the precise events are still unelucidated.

Starting from mid-
1944,
energetic counteractions were taken by the functionaries of
the Regional Public Security Office in Lublin, Civic Militia (MO) and Polish Army (WP),
supported by the Red Army. Thanks to the recruitment of many informers and agents,
who infiltrated NSZ in the late 1945/early
1946,
they were neutralised and consequently
dispersed. For this reason, in the June
1946
referendum and January
1947
elections, NSZ
no longer posed any serious threat to the communist authorities in the Lublin region.
Taking advantage of the
1947
amnesty, many soldiers declared themselves to the
authorities. Based on the documents gathered at that time, the security office in Lublin
ordered a sweeping (region-wide) action (cryptonym
Zamek )
in the early
1950s
to
identify former NSZ soldiers. This lasted (depending on individual
powiaty)
from five to
ten years. The book is an attempt at supplementing regional history associated with this
particular organisation. It also shows its significance and role among other units of the
armed resistance in the area and the forms in which it was combated by the security
police and the Soviets. It will serve as a point of reference for further research on this
subject in other regions of Poland.
