ABSTRACT SUMMARY
The scope of this book is to set in a comparative context the way
of looking at the two emblematic cultural and civilization circles of the
Roman Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox Slavic communities in the
light of landmark epochs fundamental to the South-Eastern European
identity.
It outlines basic semantic fields of the South-East European cultu¬
ral area analyzed by virtue of the opposites East
and
West
,
bar¬
barity and civilization , archaic and modern . The crossroad
position of
Balkania
romana
and
Balkania
orthodoxa has been spe¬
cially focused, considering the constructs of the European spirit s
mappings. This research reflects the contradictory visions on centre
and periphery, of primary importance to explain the history of Croats,
Bulgarians, Serbs, Slovenians, and Montenegrins. Focusing the study
on the balance between Balkanism
,
for which the region is so often
stigmatized, and local nationalisms, rather reactive to this discourse,
it supplies a background to analyze the imaginary, the real, and the
projective
essence of the Balkans, identified as immanent in the Old
Continent
s
spiritual diversity.
The three parts of this book, relying on works and sources from
the Bulgarian, Croatian, Serbian, Slovenian, and Montenegrin litera¬
tures and cultures, trace back a variety of phenomena typical for our
crossroad place —from the confessional and cultural boundaries of the
Middle Ages, i.e. the boundaries between Eastern Orthodoxy and Ca¬
tholicism, approximating or renouncing Byzantium and its influence
-
through to the dynamic antithesis of secular and clerical, the rennais-
sance Croatian literature and the South Slavonic
literały
process and
its creativeness. This boundary status of the Balkans is featured in the
intertwining imaginary discourses of the Croatian, Czech, and Bulga¬
rian literature within the widespread notion of Slavic reciprocation. A
parallel has been drawn between the Central European nations and
the Balkan peoples across the 19th centwy, the latter floating between
the necessity to adopt a modern self-identification, and the artefacts of
the market of geopolitical imagery. The book specifically approaches
the sophisticated discoursive amalgams which produced the ideolo¬
gical concept of Slavic reciprocation deeply rooted in cultural and
literary traditions like Illyrism, the Czech philological Slavism, the
Polish romantic messianism, and the Russian
Panslavism.
It uncovers
the multiform and
heterotemporal
specificity of the region, charac¬
terized by variegated mosaic of
utopic worldviews,
or otherness
pervading the spiritual make-up of the peninsula.
A great deal has been displayed of the prodigious multiformity
of cultural traditions among the Mediterranean Slavs along with the
dialogue between aesthetic ideas which testifies and gives an overall
picture of the spirit of the times
—
as a springboard to a comparative
strategy throwing light upon the Western Balkans cultural dynamism.
The special stress we have laid on the nascent literary thought of Serbs
and Croats makes it possible to motivate the advances reached in Wes¬
tern Balkans
cultural consciousness as both a social knowledge and
aesthetic credo. The glimpses over writers such as
L
Kukuljevic-Sak-
cinski, A. V. Tkalcevic and
Laza
Kostic substantiate the syncretic na¬
ture of the Southern Slavs literary process, which implies rising and
at the same time blending of elements immanent to literature styles in
diachronic rupture with their evolution in other countries.
The text accentuates the artistic continuity of the romantic mo¬
del of Croats, Bulgarians, Serbs, Montegrins, doomed to oscillate
between originality and introduced values, between known and unk¬
nown, variant and invariant, as consequences of a complex interac¬
tion between open and closed entities and forms of the communication
process. Investigating the progress of Byronism among the Mediter¬
ranean Slavs enables its interpreting as a reflection of such receptive
strategy. Its
mie
and significance have varied since the period of Ro¬
manticism in the
60s-70s
and the
80s-90s
of the 19th century through
to the beginning of 20th century. Aimmgfirstly to transpose all learned
matter, its receptiveness tends to comprise increasingly far-reaching
interpretation of the European poetic tradition, revealing new creative
solutions and putting restraints to undiscriminating imitation. The re¬
search draws its strength precisely from the reference to the ways the
Romanticism of Slovenes, Croats, and Bulgarians adopts the so called
secondary Byronism
within the bounds of an individualist-and-
collectivist dualism
,
thus making possible to decode how Byronism
has been turning into a modernist worldview matrix of those cultures.
The works of
A. Mickiewicz,
J.
Kolar,
K. H.
Macha, A.
S.
Pushkin and
J.
Lermontov
gave impetus for adopting a new national description of
the Byronian optimism. Cosmopolitism embraces the Slavic messia-
nism, erotics is conceived in the national context of problems, passion
for the past finds a response in subjective historism.
Byronism and its characteristics and trends evidence an ad¬
vancing process of rapid transition from closed to open constructs,
fostered by recipients s growing involvement and their awareness of
literaiy interpretation as a selective acquisition of a meaningful ar¬
tistic experience. The peculiar placement of19-th century spiritual
life, as well as its complex make-up have served as a background for
giving the research this shape, where redefining of the Balkans as a
transcultural and transfiguration area induces another matrix of the
otherness
.
With equal reason we have scrutinized the sophisticated
constructs of
Biedermeier,
where Byron followers, late-classical, and
late-romantic
epigons,
Young German rebels staying along the line
of liberalism, and formalist novel writers can be seen coming across.
The tormented encroachment upon the era of modernity reflects here,
and we can observe more than one otherness coexisting on a facet
of a complex array of existential problems of the turn of the century.
The comprehensive bibliographic sources from the Croatian and Bul¬
garian literatures gave a valuable contribution to the investigation of
an advanced exchange of tradition
-
real or imaginary, so essential
for the painful revealing of identities on the levels of European, Bal¬
kan, and national. Featuring the special characteristics of the works
of F. Presern, St.
Vraz,
P. Preradovic, P. P. Niegos, Ivan Mazuranic,
Laza
Kostic and the aesthetic searches of P. P. Slaveykov, P.K. Yavo-
mv,
Ivan Radoslavov,
T.
Trayanov,
N. Raynov, Antun
Matos, Milivoj
Dezman Ivanov, Branimir Livadic,
Milan Saric, etc., panoramic over¬
views have been achieved, related to the structural challenges of mo¬
dernity in those literatures. The aesthetic wandering would become
a fortune for a new generation doomed to throw bridge to overcome
its borderline status ( on the boundary of East and West , between
the present-day and one-time world ) by means of removal from the
syncretism of the identifying codes of national revival, and finding a
key to a modern cultural autoreflection.
It is unthinkable the overlapping of traditions
-
endlong or hori¬
zontally
-
throughout our cultural area as well as the establishment of
modern behavioral and communication stereotypes could have been
traced back failing to consider the social and cultural practices within
the modern urban sphere. It is the first time that the contribution of
important institutions such as the musical theaters in Bulgaria and
Croatia, the female literary clubs and lounges of the beginning of20th
century has been examined, in their capacity as enclaves of the Euro¬
pean spiritual power and as places for cultural synergy. The text outli¬
nes how a solid urban tradition has been shaped up aiming at person s
transformation, at its independence from the established conventions
and the patriarchal circle of relationships, and its endorsement as a
mobile individual.
All investigations and findings on the crosspoints over the South-
East European platforms of dialogue which have been carried out here,
provide contours of a new common model to be elaborated. In this mo¬
del defining the Balkan cultural area
would not mean to streamline
it to a common cultural denomination, it is rather set for attaining the
implication of a differentiated unity in the diversity , immanent to
the modern epoch as a whole. Pervading this environment, we obtain
awareness of the region as a dynamic contact zone,
topos
of encoun¬
ter , and a realm of the European spiritual coherence.
