1939 - 1945
global military conflict was triggered by the German attack on Poland on

Septem¬
ber
1939.
The September Campaign, or the Defence War, as the first part of World War His called in
Poland, consisted of the defence of the Polish territories against the German and Soviet armies. It was
the first campaign of World War II, which not only Poland lost but indirectly also the rest of Europe.
Almost seventy years separate us from those tragic September days of
1939,
which ended in the defeat
of the Polish Army, grappling from
1
September until
5
October
1939.
The defeat directly affected the
Polish population, taking away its independence for several years.
It may appear that the events of September
1939
have been amply covered by the numerous military-
historical monographs, diaries and articles from politicians and army commanders, published in
Poland and abroad. There is one aspect, however, which has not been made the subject of publication:
the operations of the Polish Post in
1939,
and especially the Polish Field Posts associated with the
larger military units and the military Postal Censorship Offices operating with Post and Telegraph
Offices. I have prepared this monograph in the hope of contributing to the better understanding of the
Post in Poland before and during those September days. This book describes the period starting from
the first mobilization in the Spring of
1939
until the end of the September
1939
campaign.
In writing this book, it turned out that historical postal documents, in the form of letters, cards and
picture postcards, sent from the army to civilian recipients or from civilians to the army in
1939,
proved to be particularly important. They are an important source of information for Postal History,
being an ancillary science to History Studies, capable of bringing out or adding to historical truth.
Several years of searching for correspondence with
handstamps
of the Field Posts and Censorship
Offices and their subsequent analysis stimulated me to write this monograph. I managed to make an
analysis of about
900
postal items, most of them being in collections abroad, a considerable amount
considering the rarity of the material.
The September Campaign did not last very long. The Field Posts and civil Post Offices, and the
associated military Postal Censorship Offices, were in action for an even shorter time. The latest
censored postal items are dated
14
September
1939
from
Brześć
on the River Bug, Czortkow, Kowel
and Zaleszczyki. A very limited amount of other postal documents are available, due to the events of
the defence war, the exhausting battles, the deteriorating military situation and disorganization of
communications. There was no time nor possibilities to write. Furthermore, during the war most of
the correspondence from that time including official documents were destroyed. Soldiers cards and
letters, sent through the Field Post, are exceptionally rare. Each postal item, military or civilian, from
that time is an interesting document, both from the postal and historical point of view.
This pioneering publication is a combination of both historical and postal information. It is worth
saying that such a publication is rarely complete in that it is always possible that hitherto unknown
documents may be discovered. I hope that readers of this monograph will send in remarks and addi¬
tions so that the publication can be improved.
