Summary
The notions featuring in the title of the present book (The Maps of Time. Serb Postmodern¬
ist Prose and the Challenges of the Era)
-
that of time and that of a map
-
are linked by the
notion of change, an aspect they share in the context used. The currency of these notions
was experienced extremely dramatically by the peoples of the former Yugoslavia in the early
1990s.
Leaving its mark (again) on the second consecutive realization of the Yugoslav idea,
the stigma of time led to war and to the disintegration of the multinational state. The creation
of new political borders (overnight) ironically coincided with changes taking place in other
countries which were to initiate a reverse process, obliterating the borders, and thus exposed
a problem of paramount importance to the attempts made in the present work to describe liter¬
ary postmodernism in Serbia. Obviously, the literature discussed in this book could not remain
indifferent to that touch of history .
Postmodernist prose emerged from the literary map of Serbia in the early
1980s,
but initially
-
due to the multitude of its varieties and overall diversity
-
was covered by the umbrella term
young Serbian prose . The present book offers an answer to the question about the existence
of postmodern awareness in its representatives works and its manifestations, and then traces
the changes that it underwent. The primary goal is to identify the influence exerted on the
literary processes by the watershed socio-political events, show their impact on the watershed
poetological events, and describe the nature of those literary changes.
The Serb experience was different from that of the other countries in the Communist Bloc,
not only in the early
1990s,
but also earlier, after World War II
-
during the existence of the
Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The purpose of its description in Chapter One, The
Time of a Breakthrough , is to indicate the causes, and determine the conditions in which Serb
literature responded to the challenges, of postmodernity.
In the case of Serb literature (and other post-Yugoslav literatures), the specific socio-
historical circumstances make it feasible to trace the postmodernist artistic awareness back to
indigenous sources. In Serbia, the beginnings of postmodernism within the narrow meaning
assumed here, i.e. in reference to literary history, should be placed in the early
1980s,
although
it is possible to extend the
timeframe
of this movement back to the early
1970s,
while the cul¬
minating point marking the mature phase of Serb postmodernism would fall somewhere in the
1990s.
The issue of the end of this movement does not seem to have been definitively resolved
yet, although the emergence, in the
1
990s, of a new generation of authors, evidently leaning
toward realism, could be indicative of a change of the paradigm . Postmodernism within this
meaning would be a consequence of the narrow understanding of the term modernism assumed
in the present work. In the context of the terminological assumptions made, it seems neces¬
sary to provide at least a general review of the uses of the term in the Serb tradition of literary
history, which is undertaken in the second chapter of the present work, Between Poetics and
Aesthetics. Terminological Issues .
When looking for the roots and origins of Serb postmodernism, one cannot ignore the role
played in the shaping of the postmodernists awareness by the work of
Danilo
Kiš
and his

polemics. This subject is discussed in Chapter Three, Borgesian Fantasies.
Danilo
Kiš
and
Milorad
Pavić
in the Context of Postmodernism . The writer s personality left its mark not only
on the younger authors artistic taste, but also
-
perhaps even more distinctly
-
on the awareness
of the literary criticism that was the voice
ofthat
generation. The appointment of
Kiš
as the
spiritual patron of the postmodernists activities, the indication of the aesthetic parallels between
the works of the young and those of
Kiš
constituted a gesture situating the postmodernists
accomplishments in the tradition of projects setting out to modernize Serb literature (to liberate
it from its societal obligations and from the realist tradition).
The issue of placing
Kiš s
work within the confines of postmodernism is a question that
would need to be considered jointly with the issue of some postmodernist quality in two other
prominent authors, of a somewhat older generation than the postmodernists: Milorad
Pavić
(1929-2009)
and David Albahari
(1948),
who began to publish their first literary pieces a decade
later than
Kiš,
whose debut had come in the
1960s.
Indication of the difference between the
ways in which they addressed the issue of Borgesian fantasy will make it possible to identify
the three sources
-
tributaries
-
that gave rise to Serb postmodernism.
The core part of the book analyses the work of three Serb writers considered representa¬
tive of the movement, but belonging to three different generations. They also represent three
different poetics, which continue the three lines of Serb postmodernism that I identify: the
literature of exhaustion (David Albahari, b.
1948,
whose prose is the subject of Chapter Three,
The Biography Map. The Prose of David Albahari ); the
Kišian
tradition (the fiction of
Rado¬
slav
Petković,
b.
1953,
discussed in Chapter Five, The History Map. The Prose of
Radoslav
Petković ),
and writing in the
Pavić
vein (Goran
Petrović,
b.
1961,
whose work is reviewed in
Chapter Six, The Imagination Map. The Prose of Goran
Petrović ).
The transformation that these writers work underwent in the
1990s
could be described as
an update of the notion of a map. It features in their prose in various forms (as a motif- in Al¬
bahari, or as a model of novel-writing
-
with
Petković
and
Petrović),
but always in the context
of reflection operating within the confines of the triad: history (time), geography (space), and
language (forms of description of the other two). Its existence, brought about as a response to
the disintegration of Yugoslavia and the war, did not, however, cause any transformation
-
in
these writers works
-
of those features which I have identified as common for postmodern¬
ism. Thus, their works continued to record the dislocation of experience
-
its dispersion, the
impossibility of defining some clear-cut criteria of sense, the fragmentariness, the incoher¬
ence, the belief in the incomprehensible nature of reality
-
but they situated the source
ofthat
experience somewhere else. While, in the
1
980s, it had been derived from the civilizational/
cultural circumstances, what became the basis for experiencing reality to Serb writers in the
1990s
was history, the course of which brought about not only a turn toward referentiality,
but also an evident shift away from short non-narrative forms toward epic narratives (the only
exception among all of the postmodernists being
Radoslav
Petković,
primarily writing novels
ever since his debut in
1979).
The face taken on by reality in the early
1990s
inevitably influenced the subject matter of
the writing of the generation of authors who
-
in the
1980s,
i.e. the time of their debuts
-
had
tried to construct their literary world on the foundation of coarse postmodemity, on its globally
universal signs extricated from the local reality, in spite of it as it were, against the flow , oppos¬
ing the tendencies most prominent in the social space. Modern through and through, the reality
of war and disintegration that surprised the postmodernists (and not only them) in the early
1990s
brought reflection on the nature
ofthat
postmodemity back to the pages of their work,
so that
-
from the new wartime perspective
-
it looked more like a dream of postmodemity
(or a modernity that keeps coming back), which is manifested by the flashbacks of history and

the parallels used by the writers. Wishing to convey the
dramatism
and intensity of this expe¬
rience, these authors reached for means that were new at least from the point of view of their
own strategies, means which
-
although short of marking a poetological watershed that would
justify proclaiming the end of postmodernism
-
did make their works artistically successful
projects, so that they became distinctive maps of their time.
