LISTS OF SETTLEMENTS AS A SOURCE
FOR RESEARCH

Summary
The Lists of settlements are the names of the settlements in Bulgaria, almost always including
demographic data on the number of their inhabitants, and other information. The oikonymy are
presented as administrative-territorial units, but rarely are arranged alphabetically in a single country¬
wide order.
The book is annotated bibliography of lists of settlements. It includes
47
editions of this title
or with similar structure and content. Its purpose is to reveal the importance of the lists and to
demonstrate their role as significant sources of several sciences
-
Oikonymy, Historical geography,
Regional Studies, Geography of settlements and Genealogy.
The first part reveals the importance of the lists of settlements as a source for the listed five
sciences. For each of them, these issues have found places in the classification of sources of
information. Publications of the corresponding sciences are traced, which are cited in the lists of
settlements. Extensive attention is paid to oikonymy, which the most valuable sources are the lists.
In this part, a bibliography of Bulgarian toponymy is also published, including
69
books and
articles on toponymy and oikonymy.
The second part, called the core of the lists of settlements presents an annotated bibliography.
Each of the
47
journals included in it is delivered by an exact bibliographic description, a detailed
annotation of the contents and an extract about selected settlements. These are

settlements of the
former municipalities of
Vidima,
Zla reka, Novo selo
and Ostrets in the Troyan district. Until
1978,
they all have gradually merged into the newly established two years earlier town called Apriltsi.
The reported books are divided into lists, glossaries and classifiers.

of them are publications
of national statistics, represented today by the National Statistical Institute. The oldest list of
settlements was issued in
1885
and the last is a glossary of names of villages from
2005.
Signatures
are listed and publications can be found in the National Library ,,St. St. Cyril and Methodius"
(Sofia), the Public Library „Ivan Vazov" (Plovdiv) and the Library of the National Statistical Institute
in Sofia. Each of the lists of settlements is set based on the assessment contained in it. Top rated five
stars was awarded the List

The third part is compared to information from the samples from the lists already published in
Oikonymy, Regional Studies, Geography of settlements and Genealogy. The importance of the lists
of settlements is revealed through numerous examples and their role has been demonstrated as
significant sources of new, hitherto unpublished information on research into the above five sciences.
Among the contributing elements in the book are attempts to classify the sources of information
for studies in the Geography of settlements (in the first part) and clarifying the concept of micro-,
meso-
and makrooikonymy (in the third part).
