to new writing tor the British stage
from in
о
first decade of the new millennium
The first decade of the twenty-first century witnessed an
explosion of new plays in Britain s theatres, leading some
critics to herald a new golden era of British playwriting.
In Rewriting the Nation: British Theatre Today Aleks Sierz
provides an unparalleled survey and the first major critical
assessment of this renaissance.
In Part I Sierz outlines the background to this boom. He offers
a survey of new writing for the slaqe from the
1
950s to
lhe
end of the
1990s,
considers the role of the principal producing
theatres and companies in fostering new work for the stage
.
and argues in favour of a stringent definition of new writing .
Part II offers a wide-ranging chronicle of the key plays
and playwrights of the decade under thematic groupings.
In exploring the context from which plays emerged, it considers
how writers and theatres reflected and responded to the social,
political and economic issues of the New Labour era
-
to war,
economic boom and bust, and social division. It also identifies
what was distinctive about playwrights takes on our fantasies
and nightmares, our family life, and our experiences of love
and growing up.
Sifting the
excepţional
work from the mediocre, this landmark
study shows how British theatre as an art form and an industry
remains deopl.v involved in the project of rewriting our ideas of
national identity.
