Conrad
and the end of the epoch
of sailing ships
Summary
The book Conrad
i koniec epoki żaglowców
[Conrad and the end of the epoch of sailing
ships] contains a series of interpretations of the writer s works. The common feature
of these essays is the wish to draw attention to the presence in Conrad s work of the
fundamental masterpieces and toposes of the European culture confronted with the
civilisation of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In the first chapter the author
tells about the polemic of the author of
Nostromo
with Jean Jacques Rousseau as a
founder of ethics based on authenticity. In the next part a hypothesis is put forward
that Conrad based his story The
Plantator
of
Malata
on a romantic scheme taken from
Bolesław
Prus s
Lalka
[The Doll]. In both works love appears to be a trap of fate, and
the plot makes the antinomy of consciousness and emotions better expressed. In turn
the novel Victory is read in the context of the Gospel, which allows to recognise in
the fate of the main heroes three different forms of reference to the model of Christ s
life: an unaware repetition, blasphemous parody and purposeful imitation. Conrad-
ian idea of faithfulness interpreted in this context, appears to be rooted in Christiani¬
ty. In the fourth chapter dealing with stories such as
Karain
-
A Memory and The
Heart of Darkness a problem appears of the attitude of a European to exotic rituals.
As a key for interpretation the phenomenon of the clash of cultures is used Rene
Girard s theory of mimetic mechanism. The relationship of Conrad s affinity to Ro¬
mantic tradition becomes a subject of reflection contained in the next chapter in
which the role of context is performed by Norwid s
oeuvre,
and in particular his
short story
Cywilizacja.
In the course of analysis important similarities are revealed
between both authors, which concern comprehending of work, tradition, progress
and prospects of European civilisation. The proof of its crisis is the fall of the philo¬
sophical tradition. That is why Conrad s interpretation of this question is the subject
of the next study
-
the one dealing with three portraits of wise men. Anarchists in
The Secret Agent are called followers of the philosophy of bomb throwing by the
185
writer, the philosopher in The Planter of
Malata
appears to be a sybarite and cuncta-
tor, and the old thinker Heist, patronising to the world of the novel Victory, appears
to be a caricature of God, a sceptic who deprives of the will to live. The next chapter
concerns the presence of the
topos
of wandering in the novel The Shadow Line.
A Confession. Among other things, in this work can be found personal memories a
parable, description of a wandering of a Romantic hero, mythological journey to
hell, and a story of initiation. In Polish culture an important place is that of emigra¬
tion. This subject was touched upon by Conrad in his short story Amy Foster, in
which a journey is a bitter knowledge of the nature of relations between people and
a futile effort to break through the wall of strangeness. Conrad s work is shown in
the context of Sienkiewicz s novella
Za chlebem
[After Bread: a Story of Polish Emi¬
grant Life to America] which is a model expression in Polish literature of the theme
of emigration to find a job. The next chapter of the book is also connected with the
experience of space and concerns understanding of the borderland. It can be seen
from the analysis of Conrad s works that one should not overestimate in them of the
borderland tradition since it has not influenced the way in which the writer de¬
scribed the relation between people coming from diverse cultural worlds.
An extensive last chapter of the book deals with the presence in Conrad s novels
and stories of thanatological problems. In Lord Jim, a novel in which polemic tones
can be seen to Wells s Kipps, the problem of heroic death appears to be most impor¬
tant. Conrad refers to Homeric and knighthood tradition, showing the role of fame,
friendship and faithfulness. Jim s death (although not a suicide still willingly chosen)
is not accompanied by resignation melancholia, but merely by readiness to accept
decrees of the fate. In The Heart of Darkness the main protagonist s death was pre¬
sented as a process, and not as a sudden event, Kurtz is a ghost among the living.
Conrad took up a motif of burial of a living person, which is well known in Roman¬
tic literature, and in it he contained a vision of life aiming towards death, a life
marked by the presence of the invariably triumphant evil. It can be assumed that
Kurtz s dying has its prototype in the fate of
Juliusz
Slowacki s Romantic poem Lam-
bro. In the story The End of the Tether it was presented as wasting, a result of the in¬
fluence of the aggressive, active emptiness. Once again Slowacki s
oeuvre
appears to
be an important context for Conrad s writing, and in this case it is his drama,
Horsztyński.
Protagonists,
Horsztyński
and Whalley of Conrad s story, through
blindness were able to see this side of human fate, which at the time of success had
remained invisible. The final suicide of both is a magnanimous sacrifice and a victo¬
ry over emptiness.
