| adam_text | This volume examines the unique patterns of low vowel sounds of
southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, as typically heard in
words like lot, thought, and palm. In three interrelated studies, Johnson
argues that despite the homogenizing pressures of population mobility
and the mass media, a sharp regional dialect boundary remains
surprisingly stable, only recently showing change. The dynamics of
migration and vowel merger observed in this region may elucidate
universal mechanisms of dialect change.
Johnson s multigenerational study of low vowel pronunciation
identifies the geographic boundaries of different low vowel systems
with considerable precision. His examination of families finds
divisions between parents and their children and even among siblings,
suggesting the crucial influence of early childhood peer groups in
driving language change. And a large-scale survey of schoolchildren
in the surrounding region provides a rare level of quantitative data,
analyzed to reveal the relative influence of mothers, fathers, original
peers, and current peers in the acquisition and development of
vowel systems.
