FOREWORD
The "Lithuanian Keyboard Music of the Seventeenth Century "provides the reader for the first time with
significant musical sources for the Lithuanian cultural history.These collections of
XVII

manuscripts
without title pages were originally called Kraziai Organ Player Notebook and the Album of Sapiegos. The
former is kept in the Lithuanian National Martynas
Mažvydas
library,

These sources of keyboard music seem the most interesting of the rare remnants or musical heritage
that have come down to us from the
XVII
c. They not only provide new historical knowledge about the
histoiy of musical
cuîture
at the margins of Catholic Europe, but are also unique manuscripts in their own
right, which help to fully revive the repertoire of clavier music. These are intavolatures of vocal pieces, parts
of the Mass, the pieces or parts of them by famous Western European composers, original instrumental
pieces for keyboard instruments and music, created by the musicians who worked in Lithuania and per¬
formed not just in Churches but in noblemen manors as well.

when impulses of the Reformation subsided in
Lithuania and confessional confrontations between Reformers and Catholics decreased, the Catholic Church
became ascendant. The nobility turned toward the art of their revived faith as they turned away from the
Reformation. As if in recompense for their own and their fathers' spiritual delusions, they tried to strengthen
Catholic institutions and supported church building and revitalization with large donations. They spon¬
sored church embellishment and supported architects, artists, musicians, while furnishing churches with
portable or attached organs.
This carried not only intellectual and ideal import but also practical implication. The old Italian
clavier notation is transcribed to modern notation. So the facsimiles of many pages from both aforemen¬
tioned manuscripts are included here. Compositions were transcribe to modern notation/ we sought to stay
as close to the original as possible. The original is unedited and retains the imprecision of earlier editing.
Thus one can compare the deciphered and original facsimile and make certain corrections, which would
respond to an old tradition of the performing arts.
The manuscripts contain materials about the Lithuanian instrumental music practices of

and
new knowledge in musical theory: basso
continuo,
accordance scale of separate tones, the traits of old
notations, cadences, deference, solutions, alterations, etc.
The introduction discusses old Lithuanian artistic and cultural features that reveal the significance of
these works for the history of artistic creativity. The issue contains new materials about the Lithuanian
keyboard music, its development and the crosscurrents of culture that connected Lithuania with other Euro¬
pean centers of music. Other parts of this publication provide information about
Kražiai
and Sapiegos manu¬
scripts and describe historical context of their origin. Features of the

performances, which could be
applied to the contemporary interpretation of many musical pieces, are also described rather widely.
Hopefully, these various insights will allow researchers to compare the musical trends in
XVII
c.
Lithuania and Western Europe and thereby to grasp the Lithuanians attempt to join the processes of West¬
ern European culture and music.
In part our work will fill the gap, which is felt not only in Lithuania but also in the broader study of
musical heritage. We believe that the publication of
Kražiai
and Sapiegos manuscripts adds to the know¬
ledge of keyboard music of
XVII

in Western European (Latin) contexts, and to an understanding of its
development. This study will obviously broaden the cultural picture of the 'Old World'
