Academic contexts of the symbolic
approach in anthropology
Summary
The problem of symbols and their socio-cultural meaning is nowa¬
days one of the most significant fields of interest in cultural anthropology. The re¬
search on symbolic forms of cultural behavior have become in recent decades an
interesting field of humanistic interpretation, as well the ways scientific interpreta¬
tion of socio-cultural phenomena influences these facts by implementing diverse
categories, which provide a general view of the cultural landscape. In many cases
these categories of interpretation are being conceptualized as taken for granted. This
implements a view that studying culture and society gives us a grasp of objectivity.
Modern social sciences are based on that assumption, which was for a long period of
time building the theoretical and methodological paradigm

sociology, cultural
anthropology and other disciplines interested in the analysis of culture. This was
also a basis for the theory and method of structuralism, which until the 1960 s be¬
came one of the most popular currents in anthropology. The formalism of structural
analysis was on one hand a part of the holistic approach to the problem of cultural
behavior patterns, but on the other it failed to give a view on the world
oí
meanings
and symbols constituting the social system. The critique of structuralism soon be¬
came a widespread phenomenon by the end of the mentioned decade and a need for
a new anthropological perspective has arisen. What happened there, was a wide
intellectual movement across many disciplines, including cultural anthropology. We
have witnessed the birth of the symbolic approach in anthropology, mainly in the
United States and Great Britain. Such researchers as Clifford Geertz, Victor Turner,
David Schneider or Mary Douglas have taken into account that studying culture
means simultaneously studying the world of meanings, symbols and metaphors.
The new approach soon established its own methods, mainly the anthropological
interpretation of the context in which meanings are being put into by social actors in
particular forms of common behavior.

This book is an attempt to show, how symbolic anthropology has contributed to
the establishing of the so called interpretative perspective, by the contextual analysis
of works of scholars identified with this current. The context is here made not just by
the intellectual influences of particular authors, but also by the academic traditions
in which these authors had worked. The distinctive feature of symbolic anthropolo¬
gy is being characterized by this very contextualization. Therefore the American
branch with Geertz and Schneider differs in its field of research interest from the
British part of the symbolic movement, represented by Turner and Douglas. The
work examines how this difference in academic
traditions
influenced these anthro¬
pologists by showing the broad range of theoretical sources. Starting from Max We¬
ber s project of interpretative sociology, through the philosophy of language by
Ludwig
Wittgenstein symbolic anthropology included many views as its own. Nev¬
ertheless symbolic anthropologists sustained a variety of research fields, like ritual,
cultural narrations or the textual metaphor. By putting the American and British
versions of symbolic anthropology in a comparative study this work delivers a gen¬
eral overview what this anthropological current was in the beginning and how it
developed through the years. The process of emergence of symbolic anthropology is
being defined by the schools of study and universities in which the researchers
worked, like the University of Chicago or the University of Manchester.
The academic
ambiente
seems to shape their anthropological work in a significant
way. This influence is described in this book in terms of contextualization of the
discipline, just like the anthropological subject is being contextualized. We cannot
speak here of anthropology of anthropology, but the thesis of this work draws
a direct connection between the academic praxis and the field research of Geertz and
Turner. These two anthropologists are being taken here as the most distinctive scho¬
lars within the symbolic anthropology and a comparison of their views on culture
and symbolic action makes the large part of the attempt of reconstruction of the
symbolic movement. The conclusion of this work is as follows. Symbolic anthropol¬
ogy emerged on the basis of critique of structuralism, but with the years it became an
independent movement within anthropology and the study of culture. Its theoretical
roots might be found in similar research projects in sociology and philosophy of
language and culture, thus its emergence might also be considered as a part of the
larger interpretative turn within humanities. Nevertheless symbolic anthropology
took different shape in the United States and Great Britain, where it became most
popular. That very difference is grounded in different academic traditions which
constructed the research paradigm in those countries and can successfully be taken
as a the main difference within the symbolic anthropology itself.
