Burden of the past. Evil as an object of historical interpretation (Summary)
............ 249
Burden of the past
Evil as an object of historical interpretation
Summary
Consideration given to historical interpretation leads to emergence of the issue of
attitude to the burden of history. Unlike heritage of the past burden of the past
points to ambiguity of tradition. Heritage introduces lofty rhetoric to historical dis¬
course; burden moves pondering upon past events to the realm of ethical considera¬
tions
-
in the area of thought focused on conditions of people s freedom and creation.
The two metaphors
-
heritage and burden
-
are a starting point for dissimilar
modes of articulating relations between a subject and its past. The goal of this book is to
challenge the theoretical perspective ensuing from the notion of heritage , as well as to
support the view that the burden category enables a more comprehensive description
of our relations with the past.
In the first part, Historiosophical challenges of historiography , I formulate postu¬
lates for reflecting the past and receiving historical narrations.
In the chapter Historiosophy as criticism of
historiographie
notions : I advocate ac¬
tive historian s participation in the historiosophical debate; I outline the methodological
status of historiosophical reasoning utilised by the historian; I suggest that their method
could be both criticism of historiosophical and axiological assumptions that histo-
riographical notions rest on and tackling research issues devoted to the past that are of
capital importance for historiosophy; I emphasise the need for consideration revealing
the forgotten evil that was done and caused suffering in the past.
The goal of the chapter Getting a grasp of historical interpretation is to answer the
question What attitude should we adopt to historical narrations portraying evil in the
past? . Any work revolving around tragic aspects of past events should be balanced
with such reader s attitude which will not cause a paralysis of today s object, brought
about by the demonstrated
-
and to some extent re-manifested
-
evil of the past. I am in
favour of forgetting understood as generation, in the subject of reception, of internal
tension between identification with the evil of the past and distancing from it.
In the chapter Against teleology and tasks for historical interpretation I deal with
two questions. First, I summarise arguments put forward by a German researcher Klaus
M. Kodalle (active in the field of philosophical theology) which challenged historioso¬
phical interpretations of traditional theological beliefs. The author highlights that spe¬
cific visions of the absolute result in the birth of perceptions of history that diminish evil
done in the past. To a large extent modern historiography has been based on the teleo-
logical interpretation of the past
-
a legacy of theological reasoning. And so, a need has
249
arisen to defy oblivion brought about by historiosophical theodicy. Secondly, I dispute
the proposals of historiosophical implications put forward by Kodalle. I am against his
historiosophy that pushes past events and freedom out of its own scope. However, the
main objective of this polemic is to form questions for historical interpretation on proper
relations between subject s freedom and its attitude to the evil of the past.
The second part of this work, Three historiosophical categories , comprises an
analysis of historiosophical aspects of considerations by
de Certeau,
Benjamina
and Der-
rida.
De
Certeau pinpoints the relations between one s freedom and his relation to the
evil of the past; Derrida underlines the need of active criticism of the past and the con¬
tents of its message, whose aim, however, is to salvage from it what could provide
a sense of direction to our freedom; Benjamin suggests that this criticism would be so
much more valuable if it was motivated by our love for past generations.
In the chapter Death I comment on the concepts by
de
Certeau revolving around
relations between speech and practice as well as the concepts situated in the problematic
area of theory and history of historiography.
De Carteau s
attention is focused on the
character of the modern historian who represents his contemporariness and carries out
work for its benefit. This work is the creation of a specific relation to the past.
De
Carteau s considerations contain, in my opinion, a typically modern model of subject
practice. I explain that this practice model exhibits a tension between ethical and erotic
motivation of being attracted to what perished and the results of so motivated interpre¬
tive work, which are: separating oneself from the past, becoming indifferent to evil that
was born in it and building the framework of one s freedom without taking into account
the demands it makes.
The chapter Love is an attempt to interpret W. Benjamin s historiosophy. The au¬
thor advocates a certain type of subject practice (which boils down to the realisation of
the so-called weak messianic power , enabling active participation in the redemption
process), which stands in opposition to the modern subject model. The most important
feature of this new practice model is fighting evil that occurred in the past and its death
trough an attempt to attain its redemption. In the Benjamin s model, love is in equal share
a feature of subject s attitude to past generations and a causative power penetrating the
subject from the outside and transforming it. The presence of love in either form annihilates
indifference to the evil done in the past.
The chapter Difficult freedom comprises my analysis of J. Derrida s ideas devoted
to the issue of forgiving . The author suggests that subject s freedom is a result of ef¬
forts made in two areas. In the first area I would situate the work towards creation of
a language which would allow fundamental transformation of history, by eradicating
from it the foundation of social life based on violence accompanying the act of establish¬
ing it (which has been a recurring historical phenomenon to this day). In the second
area, freedom is created as a consequence of occurrence of forgiveness applied to the
evil of the past and its perpetrators. Forgiveness that a philosopher tries to conceive is
a phenomenon existing outside history that can transform the entirety of human past but
also it is a principle
-
present in historical events until this day
-
which can give them
sense and make it possible to define and evaluate them
-
but most of all, have some trust
in them.
The third part of my work, Deficiencies of historiographical interpretation of evil ,
tackles the issues pertaining to the historiographical interpretation of evil.
In the chapter Experiencing evil. From phenomenology to historiographical inter¬
pretation I focus on two problems. First, I demonstrate how a historian s research in the
250
past evil and experiencing it by the people long gone is not only a cognitive practice but
also it entails facing an existential risk by the researcher. The evil of the past that mani¬
fests today due to an interpretive effort becomes a part of historian s life situation
-
in
fact, his fate. Second, I also form opinions on the indirect goals of historiographical in¬
terpretation of evil. Among others, I point to the need of: (a) historian s re-articulation
and revaluation in ethical terms of the articulation and evaluation of practice originating
from witnesses/participants; (b) the need of challenging interpretative strategies
-
the so
called ontotheology
-
by historiography, which could be achieved through developing
a network of categories that would facilitate expressing the diversity of evil phenomena;
(c) the need of historiography to keep a distance to the discourse of condemning and
move it closer to the practice of lamenting and mourning.
In the chapter Substitute testimony and trust I argue that what could contribute to
creating trust today are
historiographie
forms of narrations that resemble testimonies
made by witnesses of the past, which I have defined as the substitute testimony . The
focal point of my considerations is, firstly, the difference between a substitute testimony
and a testimony given by a witness of the epoch, and secondly, its attitude to theoretical
(philosophical) criticism that analyses the issue of giving a testimony. My propositions
are based on the theory of testimony by Ricoeur. According to it, a testimony is a narra¬
tion created through communicating everyday reality. Building a substitute testimony
means formulating suppositions with respect to the possibility of experiencing past
events by their witlessness/participants as well as historian s creation of a personal,
subjective involvement in the difficult historical issues.
In the final stage of my considerations, Substitute testimony in historiography of
a spectacle , I aim at demonstrating how the structure of a substitute testimony is visible
in a specific example of
historiographie
practice. I take an example of the study of the
spectacle of letters proposed by
Izabela Skórzyńska,
which for a few years has been
organized on a regular basis in
Lublin. Skórzyńska
manages to discover the structure of
the testimony of the past in the spectacle she analyses. Ad the same time she writes
a historiographie
text that oscillates between being engaged in giving the testimony
(which eliminates the cognitive distance) that is performed in the course of creation of
the spectacle community and the distance of a scholar that scrutinizes its form and sig¬
nificance for social communication and the future of its community. Because she is en¬
gaged in the act of the spectacle she describes, her discourse is changed
-
it is granted, to
my mind, the role of the substitute testimony of the past, which is also discovered, from
a certain distance, in the subject of the study.
