Summary
The variety of social world, the multitude of criteria of the emergence of social
groups and categories makes the problem of the principles of their perception and
evaluation as well as of predictions on the behaviors towards their members ever of
current interest. The subject, which in social psychology has a long tradition and has
been taken up on the level of theoretical analyses and research for almost a hundred
years, are social stereotypes often described in connection with prejudices and dis¬
crimination. However, this descriptive-evaluative-behavioral triad is not only a
purely cognitive challenge for researchers who are interested both in characteristics
of these phenomena and their relations but also in a more general problem of de¬
pendence between cognitive, motivational and emotional processes and man s be¬
havior. The study of stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination has a very important
practical dimension. Understanding of these phenomena means an opportunity to
develop various strategies of limiting of their presence and of their negative effects
in social life, including popularization on of knowledge on the subject.

portunities for All

Towards a Just Society. Within this program in the autumn of
2007
research was conducted on Social stereotypes of groups threatened by dis¬
crimination due to sex, age, religion and disabHities . The object of description and
evaluation became women, elderly people, those of a different religion and the dis¬
abled ones, no matter what the degree of their disability is. Research was onducted
on an all-Polish representative sample of

The author used a standard review
questionnaire, which consisted of four parts: Evaluation of social groups ,
Determinants , Consequences and Demography . Part One Evaluation of so¬
cial groups served to study the content and sign of the stereotypes of a typical
woman, typical senior citizen, typical person of a different religion and a typical
disabled person (a semantic differential).

Summary
Part Two of the questionnaire Determinants concerned psychological predic¬
tors of the tendency to create negative stereotypes and prejudices. For their study a
subscale
of
Extraversion,
Openness to Experience and Agreeableness from the Big
Five Scale (NEO-FFI) of P.T. Costa and R.R. McCrae as well as the Authoritarianism
Questionnaire of K. Korzeniowski were used.
Part Three of the Questionnaire Consequences concerned the study of social
prejudices towards women, elderly people, persons of different religion than the
interviewees, and those disabled (E.
Bogardus
Social Distance Scale).
The last part of the questionnaire (Part Four) Demography served the study of
socio-demographic predictors of stereotypes and prejudices towards the distin¬
guished groups (sex, age, education, place of residence, place of origin, professional
position, income, evaluation of ways of managing money, declared religiousness,
feeling of attachment to the church.
The book Social representations of groups threatened by discrimination. Socio-demographic and
psychological factors consists of two parts. The first one Survey of literature consists of
three chapters. The first one Being different as a basis of social stereotypes and preju¬
dices concerns the most general mechanisms of the rise of stereotypes and prejudices.
Chapter Two: Social categories as a factor of difference in the social position of
persons and groups concentrates on four social groups
-
women, elderly people,
persons of different religion and those disabled as objects of stereotypes and atti¬
tudes, which are often negative. Thus, this is an analysis of the previously estab¬
lished facts defining the social position of these groups.
Chapter Three The role of socio-demographic and psychological features in the
process of formation of stereotypes and prejudices against others discusses the
significance of such socio-demographic factors as type of society, religion, sex, and
psychological determinants in the form of personal and social identity, self-
evaluation and the degree of satisfaction of individual and group needs.
The second part of the book deals with research. Chapter One Model of re¬
search presents in turn the goals of research and research problems, dependent and
independent variables, research hypotheses, methods, characterization of a sample
and the course of research. Chapter two Research results is a description of social
representations of women, elderly people, those of different faith and the disabled
ones, documented by means of results of the author herself. First, they refer to
stereotypes of these groups established on the basis of study of the characteristics of
their typical representative. Then they describe attitudes
-
prejudices against them
and the socio-demographic and psychological determinants of these stereotypes and
prejudices. Each of these analytical presentations is concluded with a summing up
which synthetizes the results of research on each of the four groups.
Part Two of the book ends with a subchapter which defines in the light of results
obtained the position of women, elderly people, those of other religious denomina¬
tion and disabled ones in the context of comparisons of their stereotypes and preju¬
dices against them.
The summing up of the study are Research conclusions which are a descrip¬
tion of the most important empirical statements on stereotypes, prejudices and their

socio-demographic and psychological determinants in reference to women, senior
citizens, people of a different religion or handicapped ones as well as a discussion of
these results.
A comprehensive appendix, containing an analysis of the reliability of measur¬
ing scales, percent distributions of psychological scales, comparison of average val¬
ues, values of test statistics and a list of tables and graphs are included at the end of
the book.
The results obtained indicate the rather positive stereotypes of women, elderly
people, persons of another religious denomination and those handicapped as well as
no especially strong prejudices against them.
Comparison of stereotypes of four groups indicates that the most positively per¬
ceived are first of all women, then people of a different religion, elderly citizens and
disabled people. In turn, those interviewed showed the greatest prejudice against
people of a different religion, elderly people and the least against those disabled and
women.
From among the ten analyzed socio-demographic predictors of stereotypes and
prejudices towards women, senior citizens, people of a different religion and dis¬
abled ones, of particular importance is the financial factor, measured by income per
family member and evaluation of the way of managing money as well as religious
factor connected with the declared religiousness and the feeling of attachment to the
church. High income is responsible for the more critical social judgments and nega¬
tive attitudes while high opinion on efficient managing of the money, declared re¬
ligiousness and the feeling of attachment to the church generally contribute to more
positive opinions and attitudes.
The results concerning psychological factors of stereotypes and prejudices to¬
wards the four social groups show that
extraversion,
openness to experience and
agreeableness in contradistinction to their opposite poles of dimensions (and fea¬
tures) contribute to more favorable social judgments on other people and guarantee
more positive attitudes to them. In turn, different dimensions of authoritarianism
although not quite consistently are responsible for more criticism expressed by
means of evaluations of other social groups and unanimously account for prejudices
against them.
The research conducted shows that Poles

at least in their declarations

appear
to be people quite amicable to the above mentioned groups.
Being aware of the complex relationships between stereotypes, prejudices and
discrimination, we might assume that this creates a chance of good behaviors in the
real social world free of elements of strong hostility.
