leadership
Summary
Due to the unceasingly strong role which superpowers play in international
relations, and also due to the redefinition of their international status after the
Cold War ended, it is the aim of this monograph to analyse comprehensively the
international status of modern superpowers from the angle of their power,
international importance and their mutual relations. This analysis was made on the
basis of the category of leadership in the global international system.
A methodological assumption was adopted that the character of the modern
international system
-
its dynamics and processes of development which occur
in it (the growing
internationalisation,
the increasing mutual dependence,
institutionalisation and
regionalisation),
make impossible the effective hegemony of
any country on the global scale. However, at the same time the international system
brings the need of leadership of great superpowers. The superpowers still remain
the main elements of the structure of international system; on the one hand, they
exert influence on its stability, and on the other, they are catalysts of the
changes which occur in it. This monograph consists of eight chapters. Chapter
One is of theoretical nature
-
theoretical aspects and analytical categories (the
category of world power character in the science of international relations;
objective and subjective factors which determine the superpower status of
a country in the international system; redefinition of the superpower character after
the fall of the bipolar system; the problem of world leadership; category of power;
theoretical models of world leadership and the like are discussed. Within the main
superpowers of the modern world have been included the The United States of
America as the only hyperpower in the modern world, the one of the most versatile
potential and the global power of influence (Chapter Two); The European Union,
even though it is not a state as such, due to its potential and the scale of its
international activities, thanks to which it should be considered as an actor on
global scale in modern international relations (Chapter Three); The Russian

Federation as a successor to the legacy of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics,
and at present the largest state in respect of territory and due to its enormous
mineral and energy resources, and also this country is crucially located in the centre
of Eurasia (Chapter Four); Japan due to its economic and scientific as well as
technological potential and due to the attempts made at increasing its international
position (Chapter Five); two rising superpowers: The People s Republic of China
(Chapter Six) and India (Chapter Seven). First of all, the potential of the
superpowers discussed is presented, then the strategies of their international
policies (the doctrine and the actual activities on international arena), and on the
basis of these factors an attempt is made to define and reconstruct the international
status of modern superpowers and their actual influence on the global international
system. Summing up the results of studies, comparison of the potential of the
superpowers and their international activity as well as short-term and long-term
predictions in this field are presented in the last part of the book. An integral part of
this monograph is a supplement in which is included information and data
showing the power of the modern superpowers which are comparatively
interpreted.
