Summary
Even though there are no significant sources indicat¬
ing the condition of shipbuilding in Split in the early
years of 19th century, we do know that up to
12
boats
were built a year, and that
12
shipbuilders of wooden
boats were active in the
1802.
Due to different art images made in the first decades
of the
1
9th century, particularly to the cadastral plan
of Split from the year
1831,
we can determine the
position of shipyards in Split. They were located on
the suburb of
Lučac
where the sea was reaching the
today s
Radovanova
Street. Besides the members of
the Bui family, shipbuilders
Košćina
and
Katalinić
worked in
Lučac.
The first exact data on the shipbuilding is constantly
encountered since the beginning of the second quarter
of the 19th century. Namely, at that time the gover¬
norship of
Dalmaţia
in
Zadar
began posting regularly
annual reports on the shipbuilding in the province
to Vienna, from which we find out, in addition to
the number of newbuildings, the names of the ship¬
builders, the clients and the prices. The publication of
marine yearbook the
Annuario Marittimo
started in
the
1850
in Trieste. The yearbook contains precious
information on the maritime affairs and shipbuild¬
ing as well as on the shipbuilding on the east coast of
the Adriatic. Based on these data we can find out the
names of ships, though not all of them built in Split
until the beginning of the First World War.
Besides the shipyard on
Lučac,
the shipyard on
Matejuška,
then called
Mandrač
St.
Frane,
was active
in the mid
1
9th century in Split. The group of entre¬
preneurs from Split founded the society and the ship¬
yard where three sailing ships for long voyages named
Imperatore Diocleziano,
Concordia S.
and
Speranza
S.
were built.
Construction of the railway
Split-Siverić-Šibenik
exchanged the former layout of
Lučac.
During the
construction, today s railway cut was dug out and
excavated earth was used for filling and construction
of a new coast which meant the end of shipbuilding
activities in
Lučac.
While members of the Bui family stopped working as
builders of the wooden ships,
Košćina
has moved to
a new location, at the beginning of the west coast of
the port, across the today s Hotel Ambassador. In the
shipyard
Košćina
ships were being built and repaired
and it employed between
10
and
48
workers. Works
on the regulation of the western part of the port and
the expansion of the shore in front of the shipyard
caused a gradual closing of the shipyard which offi¬
cially stopped working in the
1927
due to the con¬
struction of the hotel in the immediate vicinity.
The owner of the second largest shipyard in Split
was
Dinko
Ivanko
from
Trogir.
It was located in the
south-eastern part of the city port, in the immediate
vicinity of houses owned by trader families
Katalinić.
According to the available data,
Ivanko
built the first
steamboat in Split in the
1906.
Its name was Hum.
During the World War I, precisely in the
1917 ( 1918),
Ivanko s shipyard grew into the Split shipyard „Jug
d.s.o.j and continued to operate on the old location
until the
1926,
but then moved to the
Glavičine-
Supaval bay. In August of
1931
it was purchased and
took over by the French company.
Maritime-industrial and technical firm
Matijević
Brothers
&
Co (later named
„Marjan )
operates on
the west coast of the Split port since
1922.
Besides
well equipped workshops, company was in charge
of dock management placed near the pier head of
St.Duje, where the docking and repairs of a large
number of steamships took place. In
1931
the French
company purchased and took over
„Marjan .
In addition to the „Jug and
„Marjan ,
several smaller
shipyards operated in Split between the two World
Wars.
Yugoslav society for ship production and repairs a.d.,
based in Belgrade, was founded in the
1931
under
the auspices of one of the largest French shipbuilding
companies
S.A. des
Ateliers
et Chantiers de la Loire .
Although they initially intended to built a new and
modern shipyard, they purchased Split shipyards
„
Marjan
and „Jug instead and began to expand al¬
ready existing complex in the Supaval bay. Since Au¬
gust
1932
Society changes its name to Shipyard „Split
a.d. and moves its headquarters from Belgrade to
Split.
The shipyard was officially opened on October 8th,
1932
with repairs and docking of steamships as its ba¬
sic activities. In June
1933
the shipyard has launched
the first newbuilding: New. No.
1-
Navy launch. The
construction of smaller vessels followed.
At the beginning of the
1936,
after the fusion of the
Split shipyard with Yarrow .Adriatic shipyard from
Kraljevica,
begins a new phase in the development of
the Split shipbuilding. The first iron ship with its own
steam operating system, named
Konjic,
was launched
and the construction of two torpedo boats (destroy¬
ers) for Navy as well as passenger steamships for the
firm
„Jadranska plovidba
began.
By the end of the World War two, the shipyard was
almost completely destroyed. However, thanks to the
extraordinary efforts of workers it immediately began
working with the simultaneous reconstruction of the
building site.
40
1956
and
1957
are underlined as the beginning of the
post-war modern shipbuilding production. Passenger
motor ships were built for „Jadrolinija from
Rijeka
and first
trampers
for the domestic merchant fleet.
After that the shipyard successfully penetrated foreign
market and started to build various types of vessels for
shipping companies around the world.
Since the mid sixties of the 20th century, as part of
the shipyard operates the Shipyard of special objects
which became especially famous in the world because
of the construction of submarines and small
diver¬
sionist
underwater vehicles, which represent the most
sophisticated aspect of shipbuilding. In late
1968
the
construction of
diesel
engine began and the first en¬
gine was completed in
1972.
Period of the Homeland
War is a special page in the history of shipbuilding in
Split. Although they were actively engaged in the de¬
fence of Split and Croatia from the day one, the work¬
ers continued to build ships even in those hard times.
Until today over
460
newbuildings were delivered,
of which more than
60
in an independent Croatia.
Relevant international institutions awarded several
Split newbuildings with annual awards for the most
significant boat.
For the Split shipyard was and still is more than just
the industrial company. We hope that it will remain
so.
